September 3rd, 2017 Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parishioners, Last week we heard about Peter s declaration about who Jesus is for him. He accepted Him as his Messiah and Savior. Christ rewards him with a gift of being His chosen one. At this juncture the Lord replaced his name, from Simon to Peter. At the root the name Peter means Rock and he was to become a rock /foundation of the Church. But this week we notice that Jesus calls him a Satan, entirely different, rather humiliating and a complete degradation of Peter. Does Jesus really mean that Peter is Satan? Perhaps later Jesus must have consoled Peter saying Don t take it personal, as we normally say. Let us try to understand the context of Jesus calling Peter, Satan. First of all, the disciples had seen in Jesus a political leader, as He challenged openly the Pharisees and other leaders of His time. They had also seen the miraculous power of Jesus. Hence, they had pinned their hopes on Him, thinking He would overthrow the Roman Rule and thus be their Political Messiah. They expected a double dip Jesus as leader and miracle maker. But Jesus is trying to bring home a message that He is rather a Suffering Servant. He wanted to change their perspective. Jesus is giving the real meaning to the confession of Peter that the Christ will have to suffer, die and rise on the third day. But Peter rebukes Jesus: No, no, Lord this can t happen to you; we will not allow this to occur, everything will be okay. We want you alive. I have already said you are the Christ and so you have the powers. This was an impulsive response. Peter thought like many of us. Thus Jesus was forced to call him Satan as he was tempting Jesus to be selfish in using His powers to escape from suffering and death. If you recall, Jesus was tempted in the desert when He was praying and fasting for forty days. The devil tempted Him to use His powers to change stones into bread and to satisfy His hunger. Perhaps Jesus is not calling Peter Satan, but rather gets a flashback of His earlier temptation and commands Satan once again to get away from Him. He reacts strongly, not to Peter, but the Satan who is trying to tempt Him. Jesus definitely loved Peter and knew that he would accomplish the mission entrusted to him. He truly became the Rock and foundation of our Church. Let us thank the Lord Almighty for accepting us as His faithful members of the Holy Catholic Church founded on Peter the Rock. Fr. Children's Faith Formation News: This year the English speaking classes will be held on Tuesday evenings, from 6:15pm-7:30pm. Last year we had two different locations for classes due to heat issues at the Academy, and eventually ending up at Sacred Heart. This year, because I have decided to add kindergarteners to our program, we have a space issue at Sacred Heart. So, I am excited to say we are able to use the classrooms at Pacific View Charter School on Henderson St.! Keep looking to the Bulletin for our start date, probably the 3rd or 4th Tuesday in Sept. The Spanish speaking program will continue as it did last year on Sunday mornings, from 10:00-11:15am at Sacred Heart in the Hall. **NOTE** Parents of children enrolling their Kindergarten aged children; this will NOT count as a first year prep for 1st Communion. This is only to introduce your children to the basics of our faith. 1st Communion is a 2 year program that begins in 1st grade, and then will follow by their sacrament year in 2nd grade. Also, remember that this year, no children will be able to receive the Sacraments without first being baptized. Please contact me for any questions or concerns and I will be happy to help you anyway I can! Peace in Christ, Melanie Broswick ATTENTION - URGENT!
