Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 15, 2017 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Follow me. Come after me. These are Jesus invitation to the first disciples. They are also his invitation to us. In the Season of Ordinary Time during winter months, the meaning of discipleship centers on our willingness to journey with Jesus, the Son of God and Messiah, who heals, casts our demons, feeds the hungry, and dines with tax collectors and sinners. We might occasionally be afraid of what our calling entails, just as Jesus disciples were fearful in the face of the raging sea. Fright might overcome us as we hear of the suffering a life of faith entails. We might wonder, why follow the One who suffered and died? Yet we know the end of our Master s journey. To him belongs Resurrection. Resurrection is his promise to his disciples. But first, during these eight weeks, as we must decide whether we wish to come after Jesus, deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Jesus. Is this journey for us once again? The commandments Jesus gives his disciples to love their enemies and pray for those who persecute them, are commandments for us to live IF we choose to follow him. The truth that God will never forget his people and the covenant he has made with us give us confidence that our discipleship will lead us to the Kingdom of heaven. All three Readings today answer the implied question, Who are you? Israelis God s servant, formed to be a light to the nations. Paul is an apostle of Jesus Christ and a preacher who proclaims God s call to holiness. John is the baptizer who points out the Lamb of God and testifies that Jesus IS the Son of God. As we enter into Ordinary Time we are asked to answer the same implied question, Who are you? How will you answer? Communion Distribution under Both Species Recently I was advised that the strain of flu (influenza) this year may be more severe than in years past AND that the antibiotics used to respond to the flu symptoms may in fact, intensify the virus. To that end, we are taking a precautionary step to SUSPEND the distribution of the Blood of Christ (the Cup) for the winter season. Thanks for your understanding AND please be ever mindful of proper hygiene during the Season. Congratulations Our prayers and wishes go out to our Confirmation Candidates who will be receiving the Gift of the Holy Spirit in Confirmation NEXT SUNDAY January 22, at the 11:30am Mass! We have prayed much for them and I ask that we continue to join them at the 11:30am Mass and to pray with them as they AFFIRM their Baptismal Gift in the Celebration of Confirmation. Thanks Each week I am grateful for your Sunday Offering. Thanks and be blessed! And I was asked to RE- MIND you of your Monthly Capital Roof Project SUPPORT envelope! #KeepRKidsDry! Fr. John

2nd Collection - Catholic University In Your Charity In your charity, please remember the repose of the souls of Ruth Galvan, Alice Moritz and James Priest. May they rest in eternal peace. A 2nd Collection for Catholic University will take place this weekend January 14th & 15th. Every year, millions of Catholics across the country contribute to the National Collection for The Catholic University of America through their parishes. The collection raises millions of dollars that go directly to support student financial aid at Catholic University of America (CUA). Your contribution is greatly appreciated.
