Definition and Scriptures 907 baptizw baptizo bap-tid -zo from a derivative of 911; TDNT-1:529,92; verb to dip, sink: NAS-Baptist (3), baptize (9), baptized (51), baptizes (1), baptizing (10), ceremonially washed (1), undergo (1). AV-baptize (76), wash 2, baptist 1, baptized + 2258 1; 80 1) to dip repeatedly, to immerse, to submerge (of vessels sunk) 2) to cleanse by dipping or submerging, to wash, to make clean with water, to wash one s self, bathe 3) to overwhelm Not to be confused with 911, bapto. The clearest example that shows the meaning of baptizo is a text from the Greek poet and physician Nicander, who lived about 200 B.C. It is a recipe for making pickles and is helpful because it uses both words. Nicander says that in order to make a pickle, the vegetable should first be dipped (bapto) into boiling water and then baptised (baptizo) in the vinegar solution. Both verbs concern the immersing of vegetables in a solution. But the first is temporary. The second, the act of baptising the vegetable, produces a permanent change. When used in the New Testament, this word more often refers to our union and identification with Christ than to our water baptism. e.g. Mk 16:16. He that believes and is baptised shall be saved. Christ is saying that mere intellectual assent is not enough. There must be a union with him, a real change, like the vegetable to the pickle! (Bible Study Magazine, James Montgomery Boice, May 1989). Matthew 3:6 and they were being baptized <907 baptizo> by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins. Matthew 3:11 "As for me, I baptize <907 baptizo> you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize <907 baptizo> you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Matthew 3:13 Then Jesus *arrived from Galilee at the Jordan coming to John, to be baptized <907 baptizo> by him. Matthew 3:14 But John tried to prevent Him, saying, "I have need to be baptized <907 baptizo> by You, and do You come to me?" Matthew 3:16 After being baptized <907 baptizo>, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, page 2

Matthew 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing <907 baptizo> them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Mark 1:4 John the Baptist <907 baptizo> appeared in the wilderness preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Mark 1:5 And all the country of Judea was going out to him, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were being baptized <907 baptizo> by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. Mark 1:8 "I baptized <907 baptizo> you with water; but He will baptize <907 baptizo> you with the Holy Spirit." Mark 1:9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized <907 baptizo> by John in the Jordan. Mark 6:14 And King Herod heard of it, for His name had become well known; and people were saying, "John the Baptist <907 baptizo> has risen from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are at work in Him." Mark 6:24 And she went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" And she said, "The head of John the Baptist <907 baptizo>." Mark 10:38-39 38 But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized <907 baptizo> with the baptism with which I am baptized <907 baptizo>?" 39 They said to Him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you shall drink; and you shall be baptized <907 baptizo> with the baptism with which I am baptized <907 baptizo>. Mark 16:16 "He who has believed and has been baptized <907 baptizo> shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned. Luke 3:7 page 3

So he began saying to the crowds who were going out to be baptized <907 baptizo> by him, "You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Luke 3:12 And some tax collectors also came to be baptized <907 baptizo>, and they said to him, "Teacher, what shall we do?" Luke 3:16 John answered and said to them all, "As for me, I baptize <907 baptizo> you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize <907 baptizo> you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Luke 3:21 Now when all the people were baptized <907 baptizo>, Jesus was also baptized <907 baptizo>, and while He was praying, heaven was opened, Luke 7:29 When all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they acknowledged God s justice, having been baptized <907 baptizo> with the baptism <908 baptisma> of John. Luke 7:30 But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected God s purpose for themselves, not having been baptized <907 baptizo> by John. Luke 11:38 When the Pharisee saw it, he was surprised that He had not first ceremonially washed <907 baptizo> before the meal. Luke 12:50 "But I have a baptism <908 baptisma> to undergo <907 baptizo>, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished! John 1:25-33 25 They asked him, and said to him, "Why then are you baptizing <907 baptizo>, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" 26 John answered them saying, "I baptize <907 baptizo> in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. 27 "[It is] He who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie." 28 These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing <907 baptizo>. 29 The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him and *said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 "This is He on behalf of whom I said, After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me. 31 "I did not recognize Him, but so that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing <907 baptizo> in water." page 4

32 John testified saying, "I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. 33 "I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize <907 baptizo> in water said to me, He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes <907 baptizo> in the Holy Spirit. John 3:22 After these things Jesus and His disciples came into the land of Judea, and there He was spending time with them and baptizing <907 baptizo>. John 3:23 John also was baptizing <907 baptizo> in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there; and people were coming and were being baptized <907 baptizo> John 3:26 And they came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified, behold, He is baptizing <907 baptizo> and all are coming to Him." John 4:1-2 1 Therefore when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing <907 baptizo> more disciples than John 2 (although Jesus Himself was not baptizing <907 baptizo>, but His disciples were), John 10:40 And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was first baptizing <907 baptizo>, and He was staying there. Acts 1:5 for John baptized <907 baptizo> with water, but you will be baptized <907 baptizo> with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." Acts 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized <907 baptizo> in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized <907 baptizo>; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. Acts 8:12-16 12 But when they believed Philip preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized <907 baptizo>, men and women alike. page 5

13 Even Simon himself believed; and after being baptized <907 baptizo>, he continued on with Philip, and as he observed signs and great miracles taking place, he was constantly amazed. 14 Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, 15 who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized <907 baptizo> in the name of the Lord Jesus. Acts 8:36-38 36 As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch *said, "Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized <907 baptizo>?" 37 [[And Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."]] 38 And he ordered the chariot to stop; and they both went down into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch, and he baptized <907 baptizo> him. Acts 9:18 And immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he regained his sight, and he got up and was baptized <907 baptizo>; Acts 10:47-48 47 "Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized <907 baptizo> who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?" 48 And he ordered them to be baptized <907 baptizo> in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days. Acts 11:16 "And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, John baptized <907 baptizo> with water, but you will be baptized <907 baptizo> with the Holy Spirit. Acts 16:15 And when she and her household had been baptized <907 baptizo>, she urged us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and stay." And she prevailed upon us. Acts 16:33 And he took them that very hour of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized <907 baptizo>, he and all his household. Acts 18:8 Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, believed in the Lord with all his household, and many of the Corinthians when they heard were believing and being baptized <907 baptizo>. Acts 19:3-5 page 6

3 And he said, "Into what then were you baptized <907 baptizo>?" And they said, "Into John s baptism." 4 Paul said, "John baptized <907 baptizo> with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus." 5 When they heard this, they were baptized <907 baptizo> in the name of the Lord Jesus. Acts 22:16 Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized <907 baptizo>, and wash away your sins, calling on His name. Romans 6:3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized <907 baptizo> into Christ Jesus have been baptized <907 baptizo> into His death? 1 Corinthians 1:13 Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you baptized <907 baptizo> in the name of Paul? 1 Corinthians 1:14-17 14 I thank God that I baptized <907 baptizo> none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 so that no one would say you were baptized <907 baptizo> in my name. 16 Now I did baptize <907 baptizo> also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized <907 baptizo> any other. 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize <907 baptizo>, but to preach the gospel, not in cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made void. 1 Corinthians 10:2 and all were baptized <907 baptizo> into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized <907 baptizo> into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. 1 Corinthians 15:29 Otherwise, what will those do who are baptized <907 baptizo> for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why then are they baptized <907 baptizo> for them? Galatians 3:27 For all of you who were baptized <907 baptizo> into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 908. baptisma baptisma bap -tis-mah; from 907; TDNT-1:545,92; n n immersion, baptism (technically or figuratively): baptism. NAS-baptism (20). AV-baptism 22; 22 1) immersion, submersion 1a) of calamities and afflictions with which one is quite overwhelmed 1b) of John's baptism, that purification rite by which men on confessing their sins were bound to spiritual reformation, obtained the pardon of their past sins and became qualified for the benefits of the Messiah's kingdom soon to be set up. This was valid Christian baptism, as this was the only baptism the apostles received and it is not recorded anywhere that they were ever rebaptised after Pentecost. 1c) of Christian baptism; a rite of immersion in water as commanded by Christ, by which one after confessing his sins and professing his faith in Christ, having been born again by the Holy Spirit unto a new life, identifies publicly with the fellowship of Christ and the church. ++++ In Rom 6:3 Paul states we are "baptised unto death" meaning that we are not only dead to our former ways, but they are buried. To return to them is as unthinkable for a Christian as for one to dig up a dead corpse! In Moslem countries a new believer has little trouble with Moslems until he is publicly baptised. It is then, that the Moslems' know he means business, and then the persecution starts. See also discussion of baptism under No. 907. Matthew 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism <908 baptisma>, he said to them, "You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Matthew 21:25 "The baptism <908 baptisma> of John was from what source, from heaven or from men?" And they began reasoning among themselves, saying, "If we say, From heaven, He will say to us, Then why did you not believe him? Mark 1:4 John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness preaching a baptism <908 baptisma> of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Mark 10:38-39 38 But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized <907 baptizo> with the baptism <908 baptisma> with which I am baptized?" 39 They said to Him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you shall drink; and you shall be baptized <907 baptizo> with the baptism <908 baptisma> with which I am baptized <907 baptizo>. page 8

Mark 11:30 "Was the baptism <908 baptisma> of John from heaven, or from men? Answer Me." Luke 3:3 And he came into all the district around the Jordan, preaching a baptism <908 baptisma> of repentance for the forgiveness of sins; Luke 7:29 When all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they acknowledged God s justice, having been baptized <907 baptizo> with the baptism <908 baptisma> of John. Luke 12:50 "But I have a baptism <908 baptisma> to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished! Luke 20:4 "Was the baptism <908 baptisma> of John from heaven or from men?" Acts 1:22 beginning with the baptism <908 baptisma> of John until the day that He was taken up from us one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection." Acts 10:37 you yourselves know the thing which took place throughout all Judea, starting from Galilee, after the baptism <908 baptisma> which John proclaimed. Acts 13:24 after John had proclaimed before His coming a baptism <908 baptisma> of repentance to all the people of Israel. Acts 18:25 This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he was speaking and teaching accurately the things concerning Jesus, being acquainted only with the baptism <908 baptisma> of John; Acts 19:3-4 3 And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" And they said, "Into John s baptism <908 baptisma>." 4 Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism <908 baptisma> of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus." Romans 6:4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism <908 baptisma> into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. page 9

Ephesians 4:5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism <908 baptisma>, Colossians 2:12 having been buried with Him in baptism <908 baptisma>, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 1 Peter 3:21 Corresponding to that, baptism <908 baptisma> now saves you not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 909 baptismov baptismos bap-tis-mos from 907; TDNT-1:545,92; n m (the act of) a dipping or washing: NAS-washing (1), washings (2); AV-washing 3, baptism 1; 4 1) a washing, purification effected by means of water 1a) of washing prescribed by the Mosaic law (Heb 9:10) which seems to mean an exposition of the difference between the washings prescribed by the Mosaic law and Christian baptism Mark 7:4 and when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless they cleanse themselves; and there are many other things which they have received in order to observe, such as the washing <909 baptismos> of cups and pitchers and copper pots.) the immersing of vegetables in a solution. But the first is temporary. The second, the act of baptising the vegetable, produces a permanent change. Luke 16:24 "And he cried out and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip <911 bapto> the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame. John 13:26 Jesus then *answered, "That is the one for whom I shall dip <911 bapto> the morsel and give it to him." So when He had dipped <911 bapto> the morsel, He *took and *gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. Revelation 19:13 He is clothed with a robe dipped <911 bapto> in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 910 baptisthv Baptistes bap-tis-tace from 907; TDNT-1:545,92; n m a baptizer: NAS-Baptist (12). Matthew 16:14 And they said, "Some say John the Baptist <910 Baptistes>; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets." Matthew 17:13 Then the disciples understood that He had spoken to them about John the Baptist <910 Baptistes>. Mark 6:25 Immediately she came in a hurry to the king and asked, saying, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist <910 Baptistes> on a platter." Mark 8:28 They told Him, saying, "John the Baptist <910 Baptistes>; and others say Elijah; but others, one of the prophets." Luke 7:20 When the men came to Him, they said, "John the Baptist <910 Baptistes> has sent us to You, to ask, Are You the Expected One, or do we look for someone else? " Luke 7:33 "For John the Baptist <910 Baptistes> has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, He has a demon!
