Dear parish family, 25 Sunday C (Catechetical Sunday) September 18 is Catechetical Sunday. Celebrating catechesis really means celebrating the Church s universal mission to evangelize and the parish s indispensable role in helping people both deepen their understanding and practice of the faith. This Sunday is an occasion for thanksgiving on the part of the entire parish community to all our volunteer catechists who are responding to a call from God to assist in the teaching office of the Church. We are so grateful for their generous commitment of time and talent. Catechetical Sunday reminds also the whole community about the stewardship of family to Christian upbringing. The family is the most effective school for catechesis (National Directory for Catechesis, no. 36.C.2). Fathers and mothers have the primary responsibility for teaching their children the Catholic faith, even from their earliest years. Although others, such as priests and catechists, may contribute to this education, God has commissioned parents, precisely because they are fathers and mothers, to be principally accountable for the faith of the children whom they have begotten in love. Committed Christian spouses build strong families. Strong, loving families build dynamic Christian communities that become a beacon of light in today s ever-changing society. While it is important teaching children to pray more so important is for parents to pray with their children. Catholic parents should ensure that they and their children are immersed in the life of the Church particularly their parish. No matter how great the CCE program in the parish would be, or how the catechists try so hard to instill Christian teachings, but when the parents won t cooperate or they themselves are not practicing their faith we can be sure that real Christian upbringing is doomed to fail. Without doubt parents are indispensable instruments in teaching their children to love the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. Above all, their participation in the Eucharist, especially the Sunday Eucharist, is where the members of the family are most fully united to the Lord and to one another. Where thereby the many families also become truly united as one family of faith nourish at one table of the Lord that sustains us all towards our journey of life. This Sunday s Gospel (Lk 16:1-13), reminds us to be good stewards and that we are accountable for what the Lord God has entrusted to us. Let s pray and support the families in our parish become good stewards of Christian upbringing to their children. Blessings to all and have a good week! Fr. Padre Tony

In this Jubilee Year, we are asked to open our eyes and hearts to see how God is working in our lives and to more actively spread His mercy out to others. We are creating a Garland of Mercy with our teen group to bear witness to our efforts to help others. For the entire year, we are asking each week when you do works of mercy, to write down one or more works on the strips of paper in the ends of the pews. Please put them into the collection basket so that we offer up, not just our treasure to the Lord, but our time and talent in a visible way. Red Strips are for The Corporal Works of Mercy: feeding the hungry, clothing the needy, visiting the sick or imprisoned. White Strips are for The Spiritual Works of Mercy: Counseling the doubtful, bearing wrongs patiently, forgiving offences willingly and praying for the living and the dead. Gold Ones are for the acts of mercy which we received from others. I know that all of you are part of spreading God s mercy out into the world. Please take the time to become more conscious of it and take credit for it here before the Lord. 5
