3. NEXT SUNDAY S READINGS OCTOBER 8, 2017 FIRST READING - Isaiah 5:1-7 Let me now sing of my friend, my friend's song concerning his vineyard. My friend had a vineyard on a fertile hillside; he spaded it, cleared it of stones, and planted the choicest vines; within it he built a watchtower, and hewed out a wine press. Then he looked for the crop of grapes, but what it yielded was wild grapes. Now, inhabitants of Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard: What more was there to do for my vineyard that I had not done? Why, when I looked for the crop of grapes, did it bring forth wild grapes? Now, I will let you know what I mean to do with my vineyard: take away its hedge, give it to grazing, break through its wall, let it be trampled! Yes, I will make it a ruin: it shall not be pruned or hoed, but overgrown with thorns and briers; I will command the clouds not to send rain upon it. The vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the people of Judah are his cherished plant; he looked for judgment, but see, bloodshed! for justice, but hark, the outcry! SECOND READING - Philippians 4:6-9 Brothers and sisters: Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if Key Scriptural Passage: A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, Son, go and work in the vineyard today. He answered, I will not ; but later he changed his mind and went. The father went to the second and said the same; and he answered, I go, sir ; but he did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father? They said, The first. (Matthew 21:28-31) Questions for Discussion: Adult: When have your actions not measured up to your promises? What was the outcome? Child: Why is it important to follow through on your promises to others? Readings For The Week Monday..Ex 23:-20-23/Mt 18:1-5,10 Tuesday... Zec 8:20-23/Lk 9:51-56 Wednesday Gal 6:14-18/Mt 11:25-30 Thursday Neh 8:1-4,5-6,7-12/Lk 10:1-12 Friday Bar 1:15-22/Lk 10:13-16 Saturday Acts 1:12-14/Lk 1:26-38 Pro-Life Corner...Abortion is capital punishment without due process. The unborn child is condemned to death with state approval, but without benefit of trial, judge, or jury. How long will we, a nation professing equal justice under the law, continue to tolerate this mockery of justice? Upper Room Prayer Group We invite you to come and praise, worship and pray every Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. in the St. Philip School Music Room. 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time God greatly exalted Christ Jesus and bestowed on him the name which is above every name. Phil 2:9 there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be with you. GOSPEL - Matthew 21:33-43 Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people: "Hear another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a tower. Then he leased it to tenants and went on a journey. When vintage time drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce. But the tenants seized the servants and one they beat, another they killed, and a third they stoned. Again he sent other servants, more numerous than the first ones, but they treated them in the same way. Finally, he sent his son to them, thinking, 'They will respect my son.' But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance.' They seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?" They answered him, "He will put those wretched men to a wretched death and lease his vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the proper times." Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes? Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit." October is the Month of the Rosary St. Louis de Montfort once said never will anyone who says the rosary every day be led astray. Let us pray our rosary daily. If possible, do as a married couple, as a family, or with a group of families. May our Blessed Mother intercede with us. This Sunday, October 1 is Respect Life Sunday: Respect Life Sunday is an opportunity for us to do what we are called to do each day: Pray for and speak out for life. We are encouraged to pray daily for an end to abortion and to pray for the right of ALL to be born. More than 4,000 abortions are performed in the United States every day. Such a callous view of life has given rise to such horrific practices as euthanasia, physicianassisted suicide, cloning, embryonic stem cell research and other practices which defy the God-given moral order of life. Let us pray and be actively involved in writing our elected officials and asking them to oppose any legislation which destroys life. News from the Cemetery Committee of Holy Cross Memorial Park Cemetery Please remember that only one flower arrangement and only one perpetual or solar light is permitted per grave space. No other items such as statuary, teddy bears, toys, memorabilia, etc., are permitted on or near the grave spaces. All of the above items will be removed during the month of September. Please do not add any new flowers until after October 15, in order that we may prepare the cemetery for All Souls Day. Thank you for your cooperation in assisting with the upkeep of the cemetery. Let us work together with Kirk to maintain the beauty of our cemetery. Remembrance Book of the Deceased Beginning this Sunday, October 1 and continuing through the month of October, the book of the deceased will be in the front foyer of the Church. Please write down the names of your loved ones you would like to have remembered during the month of November. If you have already written their names in previous years, please do not write it again. Those names are in the book already. The Emmaus Center is now open for Christian counseling. To make an appointment call (361) 212-0830.
