GREAT EVENTS OF THE BIBLE #22 -- THE ANOINTING OF AARON AS THE FIRST HIGH PRIEST! Introduction: A. Text: Lev. 8:1-12 B. (Slide #2) In Our Last Lesson, The Tabernacle Was Planned, Built, And Erected! C. Tonight: THE Important Person At The Tabernacle -- The High Priest. D. Sadly, Many Bible Students Have A Negative Reaction To The High Priest Because Of The Lives Of The High Priests In The New Testament Times. 1. They HATED Jesus. 2. Caiaphas accused Jesus of blasphemy. Mt. 26:65 3. The High Priest led the indignant Jewish leaders in the trials, arrests, and imprisonment of Peter and John. Ac. 4,5 4. Saul of Tarsus got letters from the High Priest giving him authority to arrest Christians in Damascus, try them, and have them executed. Ac. 9:1,2; 22:5 I. (Slide #3) As The Tabernacle Was Planned And Built, God Had Given Instructions For The Clothing Of The High Priest. A. His Vestments Were Described In Exodus 28. 1. God instructed Moses what about the High Priest s garments. a. They made a breastplate, an ephod, a robe, a woven [embroidered] tunic, a mitre [turban], and a sash [girdle or belt] for Aaron, the High Priest. 4 b. The ephod: 5-14 1. It was like an apron; it had shoulder straps. 2. It was made of beautiful gold, blue, purple, and scarlet materials and had fine linen embroidery. 1

3. Two onyx stones were on the top of the shoulders (the names of the 12 tribes were engraved on them; they were listed in the order of their birth!) c. The breastplate: 15-30 1. It was used to make judgments. 15 2. It was made of beautiful gold, blue, purple, and scarlet materials and had fine linen embroidery. 15 3. It was about a 9 square. 16 4. It had four rows of stones, three stones per row. 17-20 The names of the tribes were on the stone. 21 5. Chains held the breastplate to the shoulder straps; blue cords held it to the ephod at the bottom. 22-28 6. The Urim and Thummin, two stones, were kept it the Breastplate. 30. They were used to receive revelation of God s Will when decisions had to be made (like casting lots) I Sa. 28:6; Ez. 2:63 d. Other High Priestly garments: 31-43 1. A blue robe that was under the ephod. 31 a. It had a hole for the High Priest s head. 32 b. Its hem had pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet, all around its hem, and bells of gold between the pomegranates. Whenever the High Priest moved, he could be heard. 33-35 2. A gold plate engraved with Holiness To The Lord was for the front of the turban. B. He Wore White Linen Garments When He Killed Animals And When He Was Not Officiating At The Tabernacle. II. (Slide #4) Aaron Anointed, Consecrated, And Installed As A High Priest. A. ( ) God Informed Moses About The Consecration Of The Priests In Ex. 29:1-27 1. Aaron and his sons were to come to the door of the Tabernacle and Moses was to wash them 4, they were to put on their garments 5-9, Aaron was to be anointed as the High Priest 7, and sacrifices were to be made to consecrate them 10-34. 2. They were to eat the meal of consecration. 31-34 3. The consecration would take seven days. 35 B. ( ) The Consecration -- Lev. 8:1-12 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 2 Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments, the anointing oil, a bull as the sin offering, two rams, and a basket of unleavened bread; 3 and gather all the congregation together at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. 4 So Moses 2

did as the LORD commanded him. And the congregation was gathered together at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. 5 And Moses said to the congregation, This is what the LORD commanded to be done. 6 Then Moses brought Aaron and his sons and washed them with water. 7 And he put the tunic on him, girded him with the sash, clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod on him; and he girded him with the intricately woven band of the ephod, and with it tied the ephod on him. 8 Then he put the breastplate on him, and he put the Urim and the Thummim in the breastplate. 9 And he put the turban on his head. Also on the turban, on its front, he put the golden plate, the holy crown, as the LORD had commanded Moses. 10 Also Moses took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it, and consecrated them. 11 He sprinkled some of it on the altar seven times, anointed the altar and all its utensils, and the laver and its base, to consecrate them. 12 And he poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron s head and anointed him, to consecrate him. C. Events: 1. Moses brought them to the door of the Tabernacle. 2. They were washed with water. Lev. 8:5,6 3. They were clothed in the garments made for them. 4. Moses anointed the Tabernacle and all Its furniture, the Laver, and the Altar of Burnt Offering; then he anointed Aaron. 5. Moses brought the bull for the sin offering; he had Aaron and his sons put their hands on its head; he killed it. He put some of the blood of the Altar and poured out the rest at its foot. He burned the fat; the skin, flesh, and refuse were burned outside the camp. 14-17 6. He brought the ram for the peace offering; had Aaron and his sons to lay their hands on it; killed it, and put some of the blood on the right ear of Aaron and his sons signifying that their ears were sanctified for hearing, on their right thumbs, signifying that their hands were sanctified for serving, and on the big toe of their right foot, signifying that their feet were serving in His Tabernacle. 22-24 7. Moses had Aaron and his sons offer a wave offering of the fat, the fat tail, all the fat that on the entrails, the fatty lobe on the liver, the two kidneys and their fat, and the right thigh, along with one loaf of unleavened bread, one cake anointed with oil and one wafer. 25-28 8. Moses waved the breast and took it as his own portion. 29 3

9. Then he took some of the blood from the Altar, mingled it with oil, and sprinkled it upon Aaron and his sons and on their garments to sanctify them. 30 10. The remainder of the ram s flesh was boiled; they ate it at the door of the Tabernacle with unleavened bread. 31,32 11. They repeated these ceremonies for 7 days. 33-36; Ex. 29:35-37 12. On the 8 th day, Aaron, now consecrated, offered sacrifices for his own sins and then for the sins of the people! Lev. 9 13. After Aaron s consecration, the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people; fire came out and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar; the people shouted and fell on their faces! Lev. 9:23,24 III. (Slide #5) What Was The Work Of The High Priest? A. ( ) He Was THE Religious Leader In Israel! B. ( ) He Was The Leader Of The Priests In Making Sacrifices To God. 1. Thanksgiving offerings. 2. Making appeals or supplications to God. 3. Sacrifices were made to plead for expiation of sins! C. ( ) He Led In The Yearly Sacrifice On The Day Of Atonement! 1. This was THE MOST SOLEMN AND IMPORTANT DAY in Israel. 2. For details, read Leviticus 16 and Numbers 29. a. (Slide #6) He put off his regular priestly garments and put on his High Priestly garments. b. (Slide #7) He washed at the Laver. c. He went into the Holy Place, trimmed the lamps and offered incense; then he went outside and blessed the people. d. He offered the prescribed sacrifices. e. He washed at the Laver a second time. f. (Slide #8) He went into the Tabernacle, put off his golden garments, bathed a second time in water, and put on his white linen garments. g. He took the bullock, laid his hands on it, then killed it and offered it as a sin offering. He kept its blood. h. (Slide #9) He took coals from the altar and hands full of incense and went into the Most Holy Place. 4

i. He took the blood of the slain bullock, entered the Most Holy Place a second time, and sprinkled the blood 7 times on and before the Mercy Seat. j. (Slide #10) He came out to the court, cast lots for the two goats -- one would be offered to God; the other would be the Azazel or Scape-goat. k. He killed the goat that was to be offered to God; took its blood into the Most Holy Place, and sprinkled the blood 7 times on and before the Mercy Seat. l. Then he went outside the Tabernacle into the court; he took the blood of the bull and of the goat, put blood on the Altar and sprinkled It with his finger 7 times on the Altar. m. Then he laid his hands on the Scape-goat, confessed the sins of the people, and sent a person to take the goat away from the camp. n. (Slide #11) He went into the Tabernacle, took off his linen garments, washed, and (Slide #12) then put on his High Priestly garments again. o. He offered one ram as a burnt offering for himself; another for the people. p. He burned the fat of the sin offerings on the Altar; their flesh and the rest of them were burned outside the camp. q. Lastly, he washed his hands and feet at the Laver and began to offer the evening sacrifices. 3. The High Priest Went Into The Most Holy Place To Appeal To God For His Grace. 3. God promised that He would not remember the sins again until the Day of Atonement the next year. D. (Slide #13) He Sought God s Answers For Significant Questions By Using The Urim And The Thummin In The Breastplate. 1. The 12 tribes were on the stones on the front of the breastplate. 2. Here is how they were placed on the breastplate: Levi Simeon Reuben Naphtali Dan Judah Issachar Asher Gad Benjamin Joseph Zebulon E. Information About The Priests: 1. They served from age 30 - age 50. Nu. 4:1-3 2. They had to be healthy -- free from physical impurities, infirmities, or imperfections. 5

3. The priest was not allowed to defile himself by touching a dead body (except for a near relative -- his mother, his father, his son, his daughter, his brother or his virgin sister), Lev. 21:1-6; the High Priest was not allowed to rend his garments in grief or to defile himself by touching ANY dead person, even his father or mother! Lev. 21:10-12 4. The priests were not allowed to marry any woman of ill repute or one who had been divorced, Lev. 21:7; the High Priest could only marry a virgin of good character from his own tribe; he could not marry a widow, a divorced woman, a defiled woman or a harlot, Lev. 21:13-15. F. ( ) Aaron Was The First High Priest; when he died, Eleazar, his son, was made the next High Priest. Nu. 20:23-29 IV. (Slide #14) The Antitype: A. ( ) Aaron Was The God-Appointed High Priest Of The Jews. 1. Every High Priest had to be a Levite who was a descendent of Aaron! 2. All High Priests were Levites; not all Levites were High Priests. B. ( ) Jesus Christ Is The Antitype: 1. He is a High Priest after the order of Melchizedek! a. Melchizedek was the king of Salem and priest to whom Abram paid tithes. Gen. 14:18-20; Heb. 7:1,2 b. Melchizedek was a priest chosen by God; he had NO priest in his physical lineage! Heb. 7:3 without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually. c. He was chosen by God personally! d. Jesus was a priest like Melchizedek -- he had NO priest in his physical lineage. Heb. 5:10; 6:20 2. ( ) He is the High Priest under the New Covenant for the Church! Heb. 3:1 Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, 3. (Slide #15) Aaron offered his sacrifice in the Most Holy Place; Christ offers His sacrifice in THE ULTIMATE MOST HOLY PLACE -- Heaven! a. Aaron offered the sacrifice in the Host Holy Place: 1. Heb. 9:7 But into the second part the high priest went alone once a year, not without blood, which he offered for himself and for the people's sins committed in ignorance; 6

b. Jesus offered His Blood in Heaven! 1. Heb. 4:14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 2. Heb. 8:1 Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, 4. ( ) Aaron offered His sacrifices yearly (on the Day of Atonement each year); Christ offered His Blood ONE TIME FOR ALL TIME! a. Heb. 9:25 not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another-- b. Heb. 7:26,27 For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; 27 who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself. c. Heb. 9:12 Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. d. Heb. 9:27,28 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, 28 so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation. 5. (Slide #16) Aaron offered the blood of animals; Christ offered HIS OWN Blood! a. Heb. 9:7 But into the second part the high priest went alone once a year, not without blood, which he offered for himself and for the people's sins committed in ignorance; b. Heb. 9:11,12 But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. 12 Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. 6. ( ) The blood of animals COULD NOT ATONE FOR SIN; The Blood of Christ CAN ATONE! a. Heb. 10:1-4 For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. 3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins. 7

b. Heb. 9:12 Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. Conclusion: A. How Important The High Priest Was For The Jews! B. (Slide #17) Thank God That Jesus Is OUR High Priest! C. How MUCH MORE IMPORTANT Jesus Is For Us! We Should CHERISH, ADORE, And APPRECIATE His Work As Our High Priest With All Our Hearts! 8
