Godly Sorrow

14Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? 15What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? 2 Cor. 6:14-15

16What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people. --- Lev. 26:12

17Therefore, Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you. - (Isaiah 52:11; Ez. 20:34) 18And, I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty. ---- (2 Samuel 7:14)

1Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God. 2 Corinthians 7:1

Paul s Joy Over the Church s Repentance 2Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one. 3I do not say this to condemn you; I have said before that you have such a place in our hearts that we would live or die with you. 2 Cor. 7:2-3

4I have spoken to you with great frankness; I take great pride in you. I am greatly encouraged; in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds. 2 Cor. 7:4

5For when we came into Macedonia, we had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn conflicts on the outside, fears within. 6But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus, (2 Cor. 7:5-6 )

7and not only by his coming but also by the comfort you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever. 2 Cor. 7:7

1. Godly sorrow is good 8Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while 9yet now I am happy, 2 Cor. 7:8-9

GODLY SORROW - lupe (gk)- grief, pain, sorrow, sadness, grievous, heaviness

2. Godly sorrow brings repentance 9yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 2 Cor. 7:9

3. Godly sorrow leads to salvation 10Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. 2 Corinthians 7:10

4. Godly sorrow reveals your heart 11See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. 2 Corinthians 7:11

12So even though I wrote to you, it was neither on account of the one who did the wrong nor on account of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are. 2 Corinthians 7:12

7 If you reason with an arrogant cynic, you'll get slapped in the face; confront bad behavior and get a kick in the shins. 8 So don't waste your time on a scoffer; all you'll get for your pains is abuse. But if you correct those who care about life, that's different - they'll love you for it! Proverbs 9:7-8 MSG

5. Godly sorrow has a ripple effect that goes beyond you 13By all this we are encouraged. In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you. 2 Corinthians 7:13

6. Godly sorrow strengthens relationships 14I had boasted to him about you, and you have not embarrassed me. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting about you to Titus has proved to be true as well. 2 Cor. 7:14

15And his affection for you is all the greater when he remembers that you were all obedient, receiving him with fear and trembling. 16I am glad I can have complete confidence in you. 2 Corinthians 7:15-16

Application questions: Am I unequally yoked with unbelievers? What areas do I need more godly sorrow that leads to true repentance?

Which relationships have been harmed by my lack of godly sorrow and want steps do I need to take to reconcile with them?
