Message for Sunday Night, December 4, 2010 SERIES: Psalms For Everyday Living Message 14 in Series Christian Hope Church of Christ, Plymouth, North Carolina by Reggie A. Braziel, Minister The Portrait of A Godly Man ( A Psalm of True Repentance) Message 14 in Psalms For Everyday Living Series Psalm 51:1-19 Tonight as we continue with our Psalms For Everyday Living series, I would like for you to please open your Bibles to the 51 st Psalm. We will be reading from this passage in just a few minutes. *********** What images come to mind when you think of a godly man? - Perhaps for many of you those words godly man conjures up images of the ancient men of old with their long white hair and equally long beards, wearing long flowing robes and sandals. - Or perhaps for some of you those words godly man brings back memories of an old-time gospel preacher you heard in your younger days. - Or maybe some of you are recalling images of your father or grandfather reading his well-worn Bible by lamplight before going to bed each night. When we think of King David in the Old Testament perhaps the first thought that comes to mind is not an image of him as a godly man, but rather as an adulterer. And yet in Acts 13:22 God calls David, A Man After My Own Heart.

Now from a purely human standpoint, we re wondering, How could this be? How could a man who committed adultery with another man s wife and got her pregnant and arranged for her husband to be murdered on the battlefield..be called, A man after God s own heart? We find our answer to this very important question in this 51 st Psalm. In my Bible, and perhaps in yours as well, there is a note under the Psalm 51 chapter heading which reads: For the director of music. A Psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David committed adultery with Bathsheba. That tells us two very important facts: It tells us David is indisputably the author of this 51 st Psalm, and it tells us the exact circumstance under which he wrote it. Rather than reading this Psalm as a whole, I would like to read a few verses at a time and explore their meaning. Because as we are going to see, this Psalm unveils SEVEN CHARACTERISTICS of a godly man. First of all we learn. I. A Godly Man Is Not A PERFECT Man (vs. 1-3) READ---Verses 1-3 1. When God called David a man after His own heart He did not mean that David was perfect! There is a false notion that a godly man doesn t sin and if one sins he isn t a godly man. All one has to do is read the Bible to find out that notion simply is NOT true!

2. The Bible never flatters its heroes. God s word shows each and every man for who they were, warts and all. - NOAH was a godly man, but he wasn t perfect. After the flood, Noah got drunk and lay naked in his tent. - ABRAHAM was a godly man, but he wasn t perfect. He lied about his relationship with Sarah, telling Abimilech she was his sister rather than his wife, in order to save his own hide. - MOSES was a godly man, but he wasn t perfect. He killed an Egyptian taskmaster and dishonored God by striking the rock at the waters of Meribah. - PETER was a godly man, but he wasn t perfect. Remember he denied Christ three times and even swore. - PAUL was a godly man, but he wasn t perfect. In Romans 7 Paul wrote about his struggles with sin when he said, I know nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do---this I keep on doing. 3. Brothers and sisters, these are the men we often think of first when we think of godly men and yet not a single one of them was a perfect man. 4. Likewise, David, the author of this 51 st Psalm, was a godly man, but David was far from perfect. In fact, if you will think of the godliest, the holiest, the most genuine, real Christians you know personally, there is NOT ONE PERFECT PERSON among them.not ONE!

5. Now here s a very crucial truth. Listen carefully! While a godly man is not perfect or without sin, his godliness is revealed in how he responds to sin in his life. This brings us to the second characteristic of a GODLY MAN. II. A Godly Man Takes OWNERSHIP of His Sins. (Read----vs. 4,5) 1. Notice all the possessive pronouns David uses in the first five verses of this Psalm. v. 1 blot out MY transgressions. v. 2 Wash away all MY iniquity. Cleanse ME from MY sin. v. 3 I know MY transgressions, MY SIN is always before ME. v. 4 Against You, You only, HAVE I SINNED! v. 5 Surely I was SINFUL at birth, SINFUL from the time my mother conceived me! 2. David is taking full responsibility and complete ownership of his sin! This is the way a godly man or godly woman responds to sin in his or her life! 3. GODLY PEOPLE don t point the finger of blame at someone else for their sin. GODLY PEOPLE don t rationalize or make excuses by attributing their sinful failure to a bad, unfulfilling marriage..or a miserable childhood or on job pressure.

4. GODLY PEOPLE confess their sins to GOD truthfully and honestly. GOD, I did this! I own this! I take responsibility for this! This is my fault! 5. The Bible doesn t hide the name of the woman with whom David committed adultery, but if you will notice, David doesn t mention Bathsheba s name one single time in this psalm of repentance. Not once does David even hint to God that none of this would have ever happened if Bathsheba hadn t been taking a bath that night. 6. David took full responsibility and ownership of his sin. That s what a godly man does! **************************************************** III. A Godly Man Repents Out of GODLY Sorrow Not WORLDLY Sorrow (Read----v.4, 7-9) 1. The scriptures teach us that there are two kinds of repentance, one is true repentance, the other is false. II Corinthians 7:10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. 2. You know how you can tell the difference between true repentance and false repentance? -TRUE REPENTANCE is motivated by one s sorrow for the shame, the dishonor and the disgrace his sin brought upon the Holy Name of God.

-FALSE REPENTANCE is motivated by one s sorrow for the the shame, the dishonor and the disgrace his sin brought upon his own name and the name of his family. In other words false repentance is simply being sorry one got caught. 3. David says to God in verse 4, Against YOU, YOU only, have I sinned and done what is evil in YOUR sight.. That is the confession of a godly man! 4. A godly man looks at his sin through GOD S eyes rather than his own. You see when we look at our sin through our own human eyes there is a tendency to minimize its seriousness and trivialize its severity. But when we look at our sin through the eyes of God and realize our sin cost GOD the life of His only begotten Son, it reveals the true hideous awfulness of our sin. 5. As much as it pains David to think about what his sin did to Bathsheba, and Uriah, and the child he fathered from his adulterous relationship, what pains David most is the shame and disgrace his sin brought upon the Holy Name of God. That is that godly sorrow Paul spoke of in II Corinthians 7:10 that I read a moment ago. 6. A godly man REPENTS out of GODLY SORROW, not WORLDLY SORROW. ******************************************

IV. A Godly Man, Though A Sinner, Does Not Practice Sin As A HABIT (Read-----vs. 10-11) 1. Earlier I said, A Godly Man is Not A Perfect Man! But at the same time, a true godly man will not use his human imperfection as an excuse to live in sin. 2. What David is asking God to do in verses 10, 11 is to build a fortress or a barricade around his heart so he can guard against future outbreaks of sin. 3. You see, David realizes now he let his guard down. David now realizes this terrible mess all started when he entertained sinful thoughts about his neighbor s wife. Those sinful thoughts led to sinful desires in his heart. Those sinful desires led David to take sinful action with his neighbor s wife. That sinful action resulted in an unwanted and unplanned pregnancy. That unwanted pregnancy resulted in David taking further sinful action by ordering that Uriah be sent to the frontlines in battle, assuring he would be killed. 4. What David is saying to God in verses 10 and 11 is basically this: God, I don t want to ever go down this sinful path again! I want to go and sin no more! 5. That s what a godly man does! All godly men sin! They aren t perfect! But a true godly man will not practice sin as a habit in his life.

V. A Godly Man Values SALVATION Above All Else (Read----v. 12) 1. When politicians today get caught in corruption or immoral sexual relationships the first thing they do is hire a public relations expert to help rebuild their image and restore the confidence of the voters. In other words, their greatest priority is saving their own political hide! 2. Notice, David wasn t the least bit concerned about his public image or his political future. The only thing that mattered to David was his salvation! 3. This is so characteristic of a godly man! When a godly man sins against God the one thing that matters most to him is reconciling his relationship with God. **************************************** Next, we see.. VI. A Godly Man Points SINNERS Back To GOD (Read-----v. 13) 1. That word teach in this verse means to teach by example. 2. David was making a commitment to God, that by his own example, he would point sinners back to God and teach them not to make the same sinful mistakes he did.

3. This is one of the fruits of true repentance. A godly man is not only concerned that he be in a right relationship with God, he is concerned that others be in a right relationship with Him as well. *************************************** VII. A Godly Man Lives A Life of TRANSPARENCY Before God (Read---v. 6, 15-17) 1. Often when one sins against God, he or she will try to earn God s forgiveness by being in Church more and dropping a few dollars in the offering plate or by doing a lot of good deeds for others. While doing all those things may make the sinner feel better about himself, that s not what God is looking for. 2. For one thing, none of us can earn God s forgiveness by observing rituals or ceremonies. Our forgiveness is based solely upon God s grace and mercy. 3. What God wants from us more than anything is total transparency. He wants to know that we get it! He wants to know that we understand the awfulness of our sin and the magnitude of His grace to forgive us. v. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart. 4. A godly man will not hide behind his religion, but rather live his life like an open book before God.

C O N C L U S I O N If there is one thing we can learn from David in this 51 st Psalm it would be this: When one makes some monumental mistakes in life, he can do one of two things: He can either GIVE UP or he can GET UP! A GODLY MAN gets up! A GODLY MAN gets up and runs away from his sin and runs right back to His loving heavenly Father who is waiting with open arms of forgiveness. Christian, are you still beating yourself up over some sinful failure in your life twenty thirty..or forty years ago? Do you define who you are as a person by your biggest failure? Have you bought into Satan s lie that Once a failure, always a failure? The message tonight is this.. GODLY PEOPLE DO FAIL AND SOMETIMES FAIL MISERABLY! BUT WE SERVE A GOD WHO NEVER FAILS! -HE never fails to LOVE US no matter how unlovable we are at times. -HE never fails to BE FAITHFUL to us no matter how unfaithful we are to Him at times. -And HE never fails to FORGIVE US, no matter how undeserving we are of His forgiveness! GOD IS STILL LOOKING FOR GODLY MEN AND GODLY WOMEN TO REVEAL HIS GLORY TO THIS SINFUL WORLD! WILL YOU BE ONE!
