Exodus Bible Study Called to Freedom The Exodus can be viewed as the defining moment in Israel's history, for it was then that God called Israel out of slavery in Egypt and to a life of freedom as His people. Exodus: Called to Freedom looks through the lens of Christ and the Church to show that, more than just seeking to free His people from the domination of Pharaoh, God desired to free His people from the far more sinister tyranny of sin, so they could live the authentic freedom that belongs to children of God. Because of this, the Exodus story is not just Israel's story, it is our story as well; it tells us who God is and what He calls us to be. Exodus: Ongoing Bible study that will run 10 weeks. Cost for materials are $25 and scholarships are available. Email Tracy@stmarysrcia@yahoo.com. St. Joseph s Chapel If you feel God is calling you to spend one hour with him, please contact the office. Dear parish family, ASCENSION OF THE LORD The Feast of the Ascension like the Resurrection Sunday is not simply about commemorating a past glorious event. But it's about celebrating an event which literally unlocks the meaning of life, and reveals to us the plan of God for all creation. This is something to which we need to pay attention and consider what it does mean for our lives. The readings on this feast universally reinforce not only Jesus physical ascension, but also the design the Lord set forth for His Church and for His work to continue. The Lord has left the disciples physically not to abandon them but to give them the power to continue the work of redemption. The disciples were now onwards to be the mouth, the hands, and the feet of the Lord to proclaim the good news of salvation up to the ends of the world until the end of time. Jesus words in this Sunday's gospel, Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you, and behold, I am with you always until the end of the age. Thus we can also call this feast day, "the Great Commission. We are the disciples of the Lord here and now. The task of bringing the Good News is not only given to the ordained ministry like the bishops, priests and deacons, although this is given to them in a special manner, but by virtue of our baptism having ourselves called to be Christians we become sharers of the mission of the Lord to bring the good news to all in whatever little way we can. We cannot say we are his disciples if we are passive and not active in our faith. And so therefore, may this feast day remind us to take the Lord at his word and that we live what we believe. And may the Lord empower us to go out to proclaim in our lives the good news, and that the power of our faith in the Lord may be made manifest working in us and through us. When we were baptized, we were at that moment incorporated in Jesus Christ Himself, made members of His Body, the Church. St. Augustine wrote, Where the Head is, there is the Body; where I am, there is my Church. We, too, are one; the Church is in me and I in Her, and we two are your Beloved. But are we part of the Church in the way Jesus wanted us to be? Is the Church part of us? It should be. We are called, and we must work each day to respond to that calling. Blessings to all and have a good week. Fr. Fr. Tony
