Volume 5, Issue 1 Page 3 President s message Chapter starts year on positive note In September, we had a very successful Annual Meeting at the Dunes Manor Hotel. Carroll Naik was entered into the Pioneer Hall of Fame in recognition of her leadership and contributions to the Chapter and the Western Region activities. December 4th saw the Life Member Pioneers sharing the holiday season with good fellowship, great food and singing Christmas Carols at our annual luncheon. We start 2015 in good financial health with $60,000 to work with. This figure includes the Chapter and our four Maryland regions combined. We also received an additional $8,390 from the national Pioneers marketing campaigns (calendars, and royalties from various vendors). Please remember when you respond to these marketing campaigns, 60 per cent of your money comes back to the chapter. Paul Redline The other 40 per cent is for operating costs of the national Pioneer organization. I want to thank all who contribute both through the national and individual contributions. I can assure you these monies go to the Maryland Pioneers educational, health and welfare programs, and selected domestic violence shelters. In this newsletter you will see the ordering form for the New Vision Pioneers Hershey Park Day, Sunday, April 26, 2015. Please pass this information around to friends and family. The day is traditionally our day to enjoy all the rides, with the exception of the water park rides. SAVE THE DATES: Our Ocean City Annual Meeting will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 23 through Friday, Maryland Pioneers donated gifts to the Harford County Sexual Abuse Resource Center (SARC) recently. The donations included personal care items, gift cards, books and other items for women and children staying at the domestic violence shelter. This is the week of Sunfest, and because it is a week later than our usual time, the ballroom at the Dunes is reserved on our normally held Friday evening meeting. Dunes management will be providing additional rates for those who would like to stay the entire weekend. As soon as I have the contract, I will distribute the information to our Pioneer Region Presidents. Let me begin by apologizing to my faithful school readers who haven t received my usual email reminders about scheduling reading sessions in schools. Access to our book storage room in Cockeysville has been an ongoing problem this school year. We have been assured by Verizon that this will be corrected. Our shelves are full of wonderful books for grades kindergarten through grade three and they are just waiting for you. During these dreary months, contact your school and schedule a date. With so many school closings during this winter, the schools are a little behind right now but will gladly schedule a reading time for you in April or May. Spend your time now reserving your books and scheduling a pick-up time at Shawan Rd. As always, email me your name, address, contact information (including your cell phone number), name of the school, county, address, teacher s name, reading date, grade and number of children. Books will begin to be packed for pick-up the week of March 23. Since the office/book storage area is no longer staffed, appointments times will be arranged for book pick-up. In closing, I would like to thank the individuals who have donated to our Book em Project this year. Any size donation is appreciated. The average cost of a book is $2. It seems impossible that a mere $2 can mean the world to a child who has never owned a book of his or her own. The Frederick Life Member Club has supported the Salvation Army Angel Tree, staffing it with members, partners and friends from mid- November until early December each year since 1998. Shown, Frederick Life Member Partner Anadi Naik places angels on the tree at the Francis Scott Key Mall in Frederick. Frederick Life Member Club member Bruce Sheppard shops for items to be donated to the Alan P. Linton Cold Weather Shelter in Frederick. The shelter provides a warm safe environment for men and women. It is the largest shelter in Frederick and houses 80 people. Professional staff and a large number of volunteers, including Sheppard, are available. The world famous Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus is returning to Baltimore at the Royal Farms Arena, and the Pioneers are offering discounts. Volume 5, Issue 1 Page 7 in Maryland Pioneer elves Maryland Pioneer clubs were as busy as Santa s elves over the holiday season, supporting charitable groups, schools and seniors throughout the state. Western Region In the Western Region, Westminster Life Members held their annual nut sale fundraiser and this year held another event with Boscov's Department Store sponsoring community service organizations in the area. Westminster Pioneers also supported a needy family at Thanksgiving and Christmas, providing food, clothing and toys for the children. They also donated funds to the Literary Society of Carroll County to support their many projects, and presented dictionaries to Charles Carroll Elementary School. Frederick Life Members held their annual fundraiser, coordinating vendor activities at the Colorfest festival in Thurmont. Frederick members also presented dictionaries to New Market and Ballenger Creek Elementary Schools, and provided food for the Crestwood Middle School backpack program and the Frederick Rescue Mission's annual Thanksgiving Day meal. During the Christmas season Pioneers staffed the Salvation Army Angel Tree and donated food, clothing and toys for needy children. Much needed supplies were donated to the Alan P. Linton Cold Weather Shelter in Frederick. A Christmas luncheon was held on Dec. 10 with attendees bringing non-perishable food items for the Frederick Community Action Food Bank. Cumberland Life Members participated in the Salvation Army Kettle Drive during the Christmas season at the Country Club Mall in Cumberland. Southern Region In Southern Maryland, Pioneer Region President Tim Vagell donated blankets made by Pioneers to residents of the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home. The Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs and the Veterans Home Commission acknowledged the gifts. Central Region In the Central Region, Pioneer Diane Pazourek and family members gave out blankets to homeless people in Baltimore City during the frigid days of winter. The recipients were extremely grateful and the 34 blankets, made by Pioneers, were gone within minutes. Pioneers also provided Thanksgiving dinner for needy families of Riverview Elementary School in Lansdowne. Pioneers donated and bagged a hundred bags of groceries for needy families in the Dundalk area at Christmastime. The project is an annual event in coordination with the Southeast Baltimore Police Community Relations team. Central Region Pioneers also restocked the school s pantry, which is maintained by volunteers to assist area families. Eastern Region The Lower Shore Life Member Club donated two dozen Christmas stockings and 200 toys to the Salisbury Police Department for distribution to area children. The club also collected food items for two area families. Lower Shore Pioneers are also maintaining school supply pantries at Northwestern and Beaver Run elementary schools.
