God makes me lie down in green pastures, and leads me beside still waters; restoring my soul. God leads me in the path of righteousness for the sake of God s name. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of God my whole life long.

This morning we welcome Odja Barros to the pulpit. Odja is a thoughtful feminist theologian from the Pinheiro Baptist Church in Maceio, Brazil, which recently voted to receive members into the church regardless of sexual orientation. You may remember that her husband is Pastor Wellington Santos who has preached at Binkley on several occasions. We are grateful for her safe passage here and for her message that she will share with us today. Transition Team Cottage Meetings: As we move toward calling our new minister, now is the time to imagine, in a prayerful and thoughtful way, the gifts, graces, and abilities of the person we wish to join us in our faith journey. From April 17-April 30, the Transition team will facilitate small group cottage prayer meetings to allow an opportunity to share with others your vision of who you want our new minister to be. Please prayerfully review this opportunity. Sign up for any meeting by contacting the host directly (A listing of meetings can be found at this link: http://goo.gl/forms/zgd2grnkyw) or by going by the sign up table in the narthex this Sunday before or after the worship service.

Cottage Meetings, continued Hello Youth! We really want to hear from you, too. This coming Sunday 17th during Youth Group, you will be spending some time discussing your thoughts, ideas, hopes and dreams about the new lead pastor. You don't need to RSVP to attend, but we would love to get a list of youth participants. Please take a quick moment to add your name to the RSVP list. Apr. 20 5:30 pm, Lounge: EASTERTIDE STORIES OF RESURRECTION: OVERCOMING DIFFICULTIES Join Binkley friends in our Wednesday night series hearing stories of resurrection in our very own midst! Where have those around us found 'overcoming' out of loss and prejudice, fear and disease? This Wednesday, we'll hear from Gennadiy Albul about the difficult story of his hometown of Sevastopol, Ukraine, and his own journey to Chapel Hill. We gather for supper at 5:30 pm, followed by the program from 6-7:00 pm in the Lounge. Children are welcome for dinner; Children's Choir, from 6-7:00 pm, is a wonderful opportunity following dinner. Please check Event in the Friendship Register to make your reservation, or contact the office by Tuesday at noon. Apr. 25 Moral Monday in Raleigh HB2 ( Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act ) passed by the General Assembly and signed into law quickly last month has sparked many calls for repeal. NAACP President the Reverend William Barber is calling for a Moral Monday sit-in on Monday, April 25, 2016 in Raleigh unless the statute is repealed before then. This is the opening day for this year s short session of the General Assembly. It is unlikely the General Assembly will call a special session before then. An ad hoc group has begun ten-minute Wednesday evening air horn orchestra performances at 6:30 pm around the Governor s Mansion, using air horns, trumpets, and any other instrument someone wants to play to protest HB2. Information can be found at facebook.com/events/1659444704320501/ April 29-30 Living the Creative Life: Art, Beauty, and Ecology The Center for Ecozoic Societies is presenting this event with workshops, featuring Sandra Lubarsky, PhD; Mary Southard, CSJ; and Marcus Peter Ford, PhD. YOU ARE INVITED TO GIVE We will be electing 8 new deacons this morning. A ballot of eligible members will be available in each bulletin and a list of nominated Deacons will be produced from these ballots. If you are nominated to serve, a member of the Diaconate will be in touch with you next week. We hope you will prayerfully consider your nomination and the congregation's affirmation of your gifts. The Outreach Committee requests your suggestions for who should receive proceeds from the 2016 Yard Sale (August 13, 2016). Please send your suggestions to the Outreach Committee, either by email to Karen Long (kemplong@bellsouth.net) or Marge Miles (margesmiles@gmail.com) or by placing your suggestion in the Outreach mailbox in the church office. The Outreach Committee must receive your suggestions by Friday, May 6th. Outreach will forward its nomination(s) to the Racial Reconciliation Committee for a decision. The Binkley Church Council will approve the final decision. We are looking for one or two adults who have a passion for youth to assist Suzy Osborne in leadership of the Youth Sunday School Class. While there are only 7 teaching sessions remaining in this semester, we are looking for someone to help finish out the semester and then be well acclimated prior to beginning again on the second Sunday of September. The young people in Youth Sunday Sunday School range in age from 11-17. They are bright, inquisitive and compassionate young people. Teaching them has always made my life richer. Contact Dale or Suzy if this opportunity is calling you. dale@binkleychurch.org or suzyosborne@bellsouth.net Urgent need for help with grass mowing. Please consider helping just 1-2 hours every couple of months. Contact Janet O Neal: joneal23@nc.rr.com. The Fine Arts Committee is pleased to announce that there are still note cards available. There is a set of the 12 Lenten crosses for $20 and a set of 2 of the statue of Saint Francis in our courtyard for $3. These make wonderful gifts for friends or for yourself. You may purchase these note cards from the office with a check or the correct cash amount. All expenses for these note cards have been met so any purchases now are contributed to the Pastor's Discretionary Fund.

GROUNDS COMMITTEE INSTALLS CELTIC CROSS The Grounds Committee is happy to inform you of a new project that is almost completed at the south entrance to the church. In keeping with our goal of invigorating the south entrance landscape so that it represents the vitality and spirit of Binkley to all who use the building and worship here, we are adding a Celtic cross to the new bed between the fellowship hall and rose garden. This cross, created with pavers carefully installed primarily through the work of Chon Shoaf, is given in memory of Hilda Moffitt by those who generously contributed to her memorial through the Landscape Discretionary fund. The cross will be accented later by a central installation of a sculpture given by another generous anonymous donor. It is the hope of the Grounds Committee that this new installation honors both the memory of charter member Hilda Moffitt and the generosity of the anonymous donor and reminds our church and all who come to our door of the deep love of Christ and the Oneness that unites us all. MORE ABOUT THE CELTIC CROSS John Phillip Newell writes in The Rebirthing of God (a recent study topic at Binkley's Wednesday night series) that the community of John the Beloved adopted a cross with equidistant vertical and horizontal lines touching a center circle. He adds that the Celtic tradition later did the same thing superimposing a circle over the center of the cross. Newell says "There is the cross symbol pointing to the way of Christ, to the love that can bear all things and there is the circle symbol pointing to the oneness or interrelatedness of all things. One of the significant features of the Celtic cross is that the cross symbol and the circle symbol share the same center. They emerge from the same point. So the Celtic cross celebrates that Christ and creation spring forth from the same Source. They both emerge from the heart of God. The deeper we move in the Christ mystery, the closer we come to the One who is the origin of creation. The deeper we move in the origin of Creation, the closer we come to the Presence that Christ embodies." In this cross, we see the seeming opposites of left and right, heaven and earth, the Divine and the human, the life of one and the life of all intersecting at the heart of the cross.
