THE GOSPEL OF LUKE JESUS CHRIST THE SON OF MAN LUKE CHAPTER 5:20-26 MEDIA REFERENCE NUMBER SM-593 MARCH 12, 2005 THE TITLE OF THE MESSAGE: "It's Time to Get Up and Go" Part 2 the humanity and divinity of jesus christ, the son of god, and the son of man SUBJECT TOPICALLY REFERENCED UNDER: Salvation, The Gospel, Atonement, Justification Introduction to the Text; Luke Chapter 5:20-26 Luke 5:20-26 When He saw their faith, He said to him, Man, your sins are forgiven you. :21 (And) the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone? :22 But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, He answered and said to them, Why are you reasoning in your hearts? :23 Which is easier, to say, Your sins are forgiven you, or to say, Rise up and walk? :24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins H e said to the man who was paralyzed, I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house. :25 Immediately he rose up before them, took up what he had been lying on, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. :26 And they were all amazed, and they glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things today! IT'S TIME TO GET UP AND GO! I.) The Lord has an appointment to keep v.12-16 1

a.) Why? - man's in need of cleansing v.12 And it happened when He was in a certain city, that behold, a man who was full of leprosy saw Jesus; and he fell on his face and implored Him, saying, Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean. b.) Why? - the Lord is desiring to help v.13 Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, I am willing; be cleansed. Immediately the leprosy left him. c.) Why? - others need to know the Lord v.14-16 :14 And He charged him to tell no one, But go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as a testimony to them, just as Moses commanded. :15 However, the report went around concerning Him all the more; and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by Him of their infirmities. :16 So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed. IT'S TIME TO GET UP AND GO! II.) The Lord's got a work to do v.17-20 a.) It's done by His power v.17 :17 Now it happened on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present to heal them (all). b.) It's done for His glory v.18-19 :18 Then behold, men brought on a bed a man who was paralyzed, whom they sought to bring in and lay before Him. :19 And when they could not find how they might bring him in, because of the 2

crowd, they went up on the housetop and let him down with his bed through the tiling into the midst before Jesus c.) It's done through His purpose v.20 When He saw their faith, He said to him, M an, your sins are forgiven you. For the Gentile Listener, The Heart Rejoices at This News. But For the Jewish Listener, This is None Other than Blasphemy in the First Degree, and in Accordance with the Old Testament Law, Any Man or Woman claiming to be God in the Flesh is to be Put to Death. T HE O FFENSE W AS L OUD AND C LEAR; Jesus was Claiming to be God in Human Flesh Hebrews 7:25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. Why Did Jesus Have to Die? (in one word = love) It's God's love for us - that we cannot understand fully here and now. Romans 5:5-8 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. :6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. :7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. :8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. IT'S TIME TO GET UP AND GO! III.) The Lord's got lives to change v.21-26 3

a.) But will you hear it? v.21 (And) the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone? reason = to debate it, to attack it, to wrestle with it Isaiah 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, Says the LORD, Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool. when you argue with yourself, it's hard to tell who's going to win. but when you argue with the Lord - I know where my bets going. John 5:38-40 But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe. :39 You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. :40 But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life. 2 Peter 3:16 there are those who are untaught and unstable people who twist to their own destruction, reason, as they also do with the Scriptures. But will you hear it? Matthew 13:14-15 And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says: Hearing you will hear and shall not understand, And seeing you will see and not perceive; :15 For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them. The Lord's got lives to change b.) But will you believe it? 4 v.22-23

But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, He answered and said to them, Why are you reasoning in your hearts? :23 Which is easier, to say, Your sins are forgiven you, or to say, Rise up and walk? It is by far easier to say Your Sins are Forgiven You because you cannot qualify that statement, you can t test it - there's no proof. "You're a Millionaire - Heck, You're a Billionaire" When God Changes a Life, He Provides the Evidence to Prove It. The Lord's got lives to change c.) But will you see it? v. 24-26 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins H e said to the man who was paralyzed, I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house. :25 Immediately he rose up before them, took up what he had been lying on, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. :26 And they were all amazed, and they glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things today! I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house,. Rise up and walk I Must Say, That This Has Happened to Me, In My Life! Looking at Me, You Would Never Know That I was Once a.. (silence) But will you see it? 5

Verse 25b-26 he departed to his own house, glorifying God. :26 And they were all amazed, and they glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things today! Application M a n, y o u r s i n s a r e f o r g i v e n y o u. But We Would Ask When, Where, How 1.) How are sins forgiven? How are sins forgiven? God is Holy, Sinless, and Perfect. because that is true, any act contrary to God's perfection is "off the mark". sin is missing God's perfect standard! His Holiness Requires Judgment Against Sin. Sin Must be Purged Before the Presence of God Can Be Experienced. Sin cannot be purged by Sin Sin must be Purged by Perfection! Romans 5:6-8 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. :7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. :8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 6

Romans 3:23-25,27-28 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, :24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, :25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed :27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. :28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. How are sins forgiven? They were placed upon Jesus Christ at the Cross 2.) But "how" are my personal sins forgiven? How can I have my sins forgiven? 1 John 2:2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. John 3:15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. :16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. :17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. 2 Corinthians 6:1 We then, as workers together with Him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain. :2 For He says: In an acceptable time I have heard you, And in the day of salvation I have helped you. Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. 7

Acts 2:21 And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved. Romans 10:10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. :11 For the Scripture says, Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame. :12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. :13 For whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. 3.) At what moment is my sin forgiven? When are my sins forgiven? 2 Corinthians 5:18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, :19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, Repent, (instantaneous) for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Acts 3:19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, :20 and that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you even Jesus. 4.) Is there a sin too great for God to forgive? 8

Is there a sin too great for God to forgive? There is Only One Sin, That God Says - "I Cannot Forgive that one!" Matthew 12:31 Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. :32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come. 1 John 1:7 for it is the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 5.) Who did Jesus die for? Did Jesus die for Everybody? Luke 23:43 And Jesus said to him, Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise. 9

Luke 7:37 And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, :38 and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil. :39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.. :44 Then He turned to the woman and said to the man, Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. :45 You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. :46 You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. :47 Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little. :48 Then He said to her, Your sins are forgiven. :49 And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, Who is this who even forgives sins? An Amplified Version Puts It This Way 1 Timothy 1:13 even though I used to scoff at the name of Christ. I hunted down his people, harming them in every way I could. But God had mercy on me because I did it in ignorance and unbelief. :14 Oh, how kind and gracious the Lord was! He filled me completely with faith and the love of Christ Jesus. :15 This is a true saying, and everyone should believe it: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners and I was the worst of them all. 6.) What will happen to me when I die? What Will Happen to me when I die? Psalm 116:15 Precious in the sight of the LORD Is the death of His saints. 2 Peter 1:11 for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 10

2 Corinthians 5:6 So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. John 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. :2 In My Father s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. :3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 7.) What will happen to me, a non christian? what if am not a Christian, what will happen to me? John 3:15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. :16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. :17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. :18 He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. :19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. Matthew 10:32 Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. :33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven. Matthew 7:21 Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. :22 Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name? :23 And then I will declare to them, I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness! 11

8.) Who can be forgiven? can anyone be forgiven?, Romans 10:13 For whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. Philippians 2:10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, :11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. John 6:37 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out. end 12
