Grade 6 June 20 th, 2017 Final Exam A Great Hero Every January, we celebrate the life of a great man: Dr. Martin Luther King Junior. He was a brave and an unusual person who worked hard to bring equal rights to Black African Americans. He fought for civil rights because according to him everyone should be treated fairly no matter their skin colour.

Martin Luther King was born in 1929 in Atlanta, USA. From an early age he was upset at how black people were treated. He did not understand why he was not allowed to play with white children, go to the same schools, eat in the same restaurants, or even sit at the front of a public bus. Martin Luther King was a Christian minister who spent his life trying to make the world a better and fairer place. Martin Luther King traveled around the country, giving over 2,500 speeches. He also wrote articles and books. He led marches in many cities. Thousands of people joined his peaceful movement to protest the unfair laws. His work caused him to be arrested 29 times. In 1964, it became illegal for people to treat others unfairly because of their skin color. In that same year, Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize, one of the highest rewards in the world. Martin Luther King had many enemies. His life ended in 1968, when at the age of 39, he was killed by an assassin. Many people all over the world admire him for his courage and consider him a great leader for the people.
