Read Inside @StAdalbertSchenectady Our Parish and God s Love Have No Borders! All Are Welcome!

In July 2016, we placed our parish in the prayerful hands of Sts. Joachim and Anne. We asked that they intercede with their grandson, Jesus, as we discern our parish s future role in Christ s mission and the best use of our parish s resources to accomplish that. Sts. Joachim and Anne, pray for us! OUR TRADITIONS: Midsummer s Night In Europe, the custom of celebrating midsummer s night around the shortest night of the year is quite ancient and predates Christianity. As Christianity spread, every nation in Europe Christianized the festival in their own way. In the Slavic nations, the festival was moved a couple of days past the solstice (June 21/22) to the Feast of St. John the Baptist (June23/24). There are 3 names, which are used interchangeably, Noc Świętojańska (Saint John s Night), Sobotka (Bonfire), and Noc Kupały ( kapala being an ancient word for ritual bath ). Besides food and dancing which always accompany a Polish festival, the traditions associated with this warm weather feast are pictured on the bulletin cover: (top left) Luminarz, which were released by a crowd gathered in the market square of a Polish city, light up the summer night sky. Fireworks are also common. (top right) Young, single Polish woman sets a wreath of flowers and herbs adrift. Traditionally, young, single Polish men would swim out to retrieve these wreaths. (middle right) Polish dancers jump through a wreath of flowers and herbs. (bottom right) Wycinanki or paper art depicting a young couple surrounded by a wreath of flowers and herbs. (bottom left) Polish wycinanki appearing in book printed in Great Britain containing Shakespeare's famous play A Midsummer s Night Dream. In Poland, midnight on St. John s Eve (June 23) is when St. John blesses the water and the outdoor swimming season begins. Are you or someone you know interested in learning more about joining or returning to the Catholic Church? Speak to Deacon Joe or call the parish office at 346-4204 TELEPHONE VISITATION TEAM Our goal is to keep our parish connected to all of its families. Each member of this team would call 56 parish families every 2 weeks to touch base and see how they are doing. Over the course of a month a team member would contact about 2 dozen parish families. If we get a lot of volunteers the work load would be a lot less. This is a great team for folks who are homebound. Contact parish office. MEDIA/COMMUNICATIONS TEAM We are seeking folks with talents in photography, assisting with the preparation of our weekly bulletin and other print material, social media (Facebook, Instagram, websites, et al), live streaming, video conferencing, marketing, working with Microsoft Publisher, graphic arts, etc. Anything that can help us to get the message out about our faith in Jesus and our parish s efforts to live out our faith in service to the Church s Mission. Contact parish office. PRAY FOR OUR COUNTRY! FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM Hour of Prayer Tuesday, June 27 from 6:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ, through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society.
