SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2016 FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT Greetings from Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart to proclaim the Gospel of God which He promised long ago the Gospel concerning His Son who was descended from David Through Him we have been favored with apostleship, that we may spread His name and bring to obedient faith all the Gentiles among whom are you who have been called to belong to Jesus Christ. Not a Christmas card, but the beginning of a special inspired letter which Paul sent to the Roman community. Paul knew his role as both servant and apostle. His greeting is directed to us, and like the many cards we receive and send, we realize we are servants and apostles, too. We are here to spread His name because we have been invited to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. We have the same mission to bring others to the Lord. It might be someone in your family who has wavered in the practice of the faith. It might be someone weighed down with a hurt or problem, asking you to help lift them in their time of need. FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT First Reading: Isaiah 7:10-14 Ahaz receives from Isaiah a prophecy that he will be successful in war and is urged to ask for a sign that the prophecy is true. The sign is The virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and shall name Him Emmanuel. Second Reading: Romans 1:1-7 Paul greets the Romans by pointing out that Jesus is the Christ who was promised to them in Scripture. He, Paul, is the apostle favored with the task of spreading the name of Christ to all. Gospel: Matthew 1:18-24 In a brief, straightforward, simple narrative, Matthew recounts the events leading to Jesus birth. He details the appearance of the angel in a dream to Joseph and stresses that All this happened to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophets. Our response can be a Christmas card and a gift for them. Come, Lord Jesus. For those not currently on the envelope system, we invite you to please take home one of the special Christmas Gift envelopes from the Ushers tables located in the lobby. Thank you for your continued generosity and many sacrifices, and may the blessings of the Christ Child be with you and your loved ones throughout the Christmas season.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2016 FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT THIS FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT In this last week before Christmas, we focus on God s love as we prepare for the birth of Our Savior Jesus Christ. The candle for the Fourth Sunday of Advent is the Angel s Candle or Candle of Peace. As we light the flame, we are reminded of the heavenly hosts who proclaimed Christ s arrival with, Behold, I bring unto you good tidings of great joy. After last week s rose colored candle, we are back to a violet candle for this last week. While people associate Christmas with red and green, it s violet that colors the Advent season. While it symbolizes repentance and fasting, violet also signifies the anticipation and excitement that precedes the King, and is the color of royalty and sovereignty. You may want to find time to meditate on this verse: The Lord will give you a sign in any case: It is this: the young woman is with child and will give birth to a son whom she will call Emmanuel. (Isaiah 7:14) ADVENT PRAYER Father, in the wilderness of the Jordan, you sent a message to prepare people s hearts for the coming if your Son. Help me to hear his words and repent of my sins, so that I may clearly see the way to walk, the truth to speak, and the life to live for Him, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. +ADVENT RECONCILIATION MONDAY+ THIS MONDAY, DECEMBER 19 th, 4-8 PM This coming Monday, has been designated as Advent Reconciliation Monday throughout the Archdiocese of New York. From 4 8:00 PM, a Priest will be available in the Church for anyone who would like to stop by for confession. Thanks to the efforts of our Holy Father, as well as, Cardinal Dolan, who has spoken about this so often, there has been a great deal of attention paid to the message of God s love and mercy. Advent gives us a wonderful opportunity to remind ourselves that the Sacrament of Penance is the best way to prepare for the Joy of Christmas and celebrating the birth of Our Savior. ON CONFESSION If you want peace in your heart, I personally invite you to come to Confession. There is no treasure in life like a clear conscience. If you approach this sacrament with a sincere and humble heart, you will experience the flow of grace in your life. Listen to the words of absolution: By the ministry of the Church, may God grant you pardon and peace, and I absolve you from all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. As the Priest speaks these words, the floodgates of grace are opened and your soul will be filled with a deep peace. You will experience an inexplicable lightness and an intoxicating sense of joy and liberation. Confession is a gift. Rediscover Catholicism, by Matthew Kelly THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS Can you imagine not being permitted to freely say Merry Christmas? Can you imagine having to conceal your beliefs by describing them in seemingly unrelated words, like singing an apparently happy, almost nonsensical song when it is really about your beliefs? For Catholics, those conditions did occur in England, as well as, other places between 1558-1829. The Christmas carol The Twelve Days of Christmas is, in fact, a result of Catholics needing to conceal their beliefs in this way. Written in England as a catechism for young Catholics, The Twelve Days of Christmas contains hidden meanings intended to help children remember lessons of faith. Instead of referring to a suitor, the true love mentioned in the song really refers to God. The me who receives the presents is symbolic of every baptized person. The meaning of the other symbols are: The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus Christ. Two turtle doves the Old and New Testaments Three French hens Faith, Hope and Charity Four calling birds the four Gospels Five golden rings first five books of the Old Testament Six geese a-laying the six days of Creation Seven swans a-swimming seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit Eight maids a-milking the eight Beatitudes Nine ladies dancing nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit Ten lords a-leaping the Ten Commandments Eleven pipers piping the eleven faithful Disciples Twelve drummers drumming the twelve points of belief in the Apostles Creed. CHRISTMAS FLOWERS COLLECTION THIS SUNDAY Flowers and greens for our Christmas services are made possible by your generous donations. All registered parishioners will have received special envelopes for Christmas Flower donations. Envelopes may also be found on the Ushers tables in the lobby of the Church. If you would like to donate in honor or memory of a loved one, please write the name of your beloved deceased, insert your offering, and place the envelope in the collection basket at any of our weekend masses. FATHER ABRAHAM S 40 th ANNIVERSARY OF ORDINATION THIS SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18, 12:30PM MASS Please join Father Abraham at a Mass to celebrate his 40 th Anniversary of Ordination to the Priesthood on Sunday, December 18 th at our 12:30 PM Mass. A Reception will follow in the School s Gymnasium. Everyone is invited to celebrate this wonderful occasion.

St. Catharine s Ladies Guild thanks you for participating in their Cape Raffle and wishes to congratulate the winner, Yolanda Fyfe. Have a Blessed and Merry Christmas! PLEASE BE CAREFUL With such a large number of people attending our Parish Church each weekend, we need to remember to slow down and be careful in the parking lot. We have elderly people walking to and from the Church, and many children attending our Family Mass on Sunday. Please drive carefully! Also, please do not park in the Fire Lanes in the front of the School. Emergency vehicles may need to come down that already-narrow lane and it becomes very difficult for them. Thank you! ATTN. ST.
