There talking to his mother Maharaj says glory of Mulji. Then... 3. "I have spun just a sliver from the huge piles of cotton." (2/17) Ramanand Swami to Muktanand Swami Dissatisfied with the samadhi that Maharaj granted to many people, Muktanand Swami went in a nearby forest of Khakhra trees. On their way back, Ramanand Swami appeared to him and explained him the form of Maharaj. Then...

- 2 - Q.2 Give reasons for the following (two to three lines each). (Total Marks: 6) 1. Shriji Maharaj stopped Nrusinhanand Swami's studies. (10/80) A. Early in the morning Nrusinhanand Swami would wake up to read in the light of the lamp before Maharaj. While reading he became focussed on the form of Maharaj. Once, the flames from the lamp burnt a page of the Bhagvat. When Maharaj scolded him, he burst into tears and explained the reality. Then Maharaj told, Whatever there is to attain by learning, you have attained. So you may stop your studies. 2. Shriji Maharaj handed over two bricks to Teja Bhakta. (19/140) A. When digging of the Dharu Lake was about to finish in Vartal, Shriji Maharaj was standing on two bricks and was blessing and giving prasad to all the devotees who were engaged in this work. Teja Bhakta and his fellow Harijan devotees of Chhani came there. Maharaj affectionately asked them, What shall I give you? Teja Bhakta, on behalf of all, told Maharaj, Continue to bestow your divine favour upon us. We are very poor. Please give the bricks on which you are standing to us so that we can build a mandir and install them and your murti in it and worship and sing bhajans. So, Shriji Maharaj handed over the bricks to Teja Bhakta. 3. All the sadhus apologized and stopped indulging into separatist activities. (22/153-154) A. The Sadhus started to be called after the names of the mandirs where they lived. So they used to refer to one another as Vasudeviya, Nar-Narayaniya, Lakshmi- Narayaniya and so on. Once, as Shriji Maharaj learned about it, he invited all the sadhus and said, Those who are Vasudeviya, please sit here, the Nar-Narayaniya sit there, those who are Lakshmi-Narayaniya should occupy these seats. Then, at the end he said, Now if any Swaminarayaniyas remain, they should come and seat near me. All those sadhus who were proud of their different labels and groups felt ashamed and apologized and stopped indulging into separatist activities. Q.3 Write short note on any ONE of the following. (in 15 lines) (Total Marks: 5) 1. Six Objectives (16/115-116) Maharaj was in Kariyani. Gopalanand Swami came there from Vadodara for the darshan of Maharaj. Maharaj got up from his seat, embraced him and offered him cold water. Then he took Gopalanand Swami to Akshar Ordi and asked him to sit by his side. He asked other sadhus and devotees to go outside. He said to Nishkulanand Swami, You, too, go out and start cutting stone for the washing area which is under construction behind the gate. Then he closed the door of Akshar Ordi and explained to Gopalanand Swami, the six objectives behind his incarnation on the earth: 1. To spread our supreme upasana (worship) and supreme jnan (wisdom) throughout the world. 2. To guide the followers of preceding avatars to worship our swarup and so send them directly to Akshardham. 3. To liberate Bhaktidevi and Dharmadev from the harrassment of the evil people and bless them with the bliss of our murti. 4. To revive and spread the long forgotten Ekantik Dharma that consists of dharma, jnan, vairagya and bhakti with an understanding of God s glory. 5. To give the fruits of the austerities and bhakti in the form of our darshan to those ascetics and yogis who have been worshipping God since eons; to fulfil the wishes of those mumukshus who have great affection for God; and also to shower them with love. 6. To establish on this earth the tradition of Ekantik sadhus who will forever sustain Ekantik dharma and keep the path to moksha to Akshardham open forever; to build shikharbaddha mandirs for worship; to give shastras narrating my divine incidents and expounding dharma and jnan. Nishkulanand Swami overheard all these six objectives through a slit in the door. Then Maharaj celebrated the Diwali festival in Kariyani. A great devotee named Premabai from port Diu came carrying paduka (sandals), Chhatra (umbrella), chamar (whisk), precious clothes with artistic workmanship and ornaments of gold

- 3 - for Maharaj. Maharaj knew her feelings, so he went to accept her offerings. He kept them with him for sometime but it was a practice with him not to keep any precious thing for long. He would always hand it over to someone else. He handed over the precious clothes and ornaments to Dinanth Bhatt saying, Krishnarpan. Someone in the assembly felt envious about this, so Maharaj preached to the assembly against vanity and jealousy. 2. Made Mukund Brahmachari sit with him (6/48-49) Maharaj was on his way to Vandhiya in Kutch. He was accompanied by Mukund Brahmachari. They met some robbers on the way. Maharaj made Brahmachari part with whatever food he had. After walking for some time, Maharaj said to Brahmachari, I am terribly hungry, please give me some sukhdi if you have. I won t be able to walk further without food. Maharaj stood there. Just then a Kanbi Patel passed by riding an empty cart. Brahmachari approached him and requested him to stop his cart. The driver agreed to sit Maharaj. Brahmachari continued to follow the cart on foot. As the cart was running at the great speed, leaving Brahmachari behind, Maharaj put the load of the entire brahmand into the cart. The bullocks could not pull it further. Then Maharaj said to Patel, That bearded sadhu has stopped the cart by black magic. If you make him sit in the cart then it will be able to move. If he refuses to sit pull him forcefully into your cart. Patel persuaded Brahmachari to sit in his cart. The cart began to roll again. Maharaj got down near a dharmashala at Vandhiya and ate sukhdi at patel s house. Thus, Maharaj often used to play such tricks. 3. Learn Sanskrit (7/56-57) Atmanand Swami was not very learned, but he surpassed others in his actions and saintliness. He was always eager to carry out the commands of Maharaj. So, he was known as vachanni murti- one who obeyed all of Maharaj s orders. Once, he arrived in Jamnagar known as Chhoti Kashi. Some learned Brahmins and scholars came to know that a Swaminarayan Sadhu had come for preaching. They went to Atmanand Swami for religious discussion. They asked Swami, What is your form? Swami replied, The commands of my guru is the essence of all the shastras. The scholar Brahmins ridiculed Atmanand Swami by saying He is a dunce, a fool. When Maharaj came to Jetalpur for the grand yagna, he learned about this episode, he realized that this was a great mistake. He soon decided to meet the requirement. He commanded many young and old sadhus to learn Sanskrit and local languages. Over a period of time, Nityanand Swami, Gopalanand Swami, Shukanand Swami, Shantanand Swami, Bhagvadanand Swami, Vasudevanand Brahmachari, Nishkamanand Brahmachari and many other sadhus became scholars in sanskrit, other languages and the scriptures. Many other sadhus were sent to Surat for the study of Sanskrit. Maharaj tested the sadhus after they had completed their studies and he honoured and encouraged them by giving a sanctified holy relic as a momento. As a result, the Sampradaya became enriched with many original and independent scholarly commentaries by the learned paramhansas on the Gita, the Upnishads, Vedanta Sutras, Shrimad Bhagvat, Shandilya Sutra and other shastras. They produced many great original works in Sanskrit like Satsangijivan, Harivakya Sudha Sindhu, Satsangi Bhushan, Harililakalpataru, Shri Hari Digvijay and many others. Similarly, in the field of music the paramhansas initially composed bhajans which were tuned after the fashion of deshi raag and dhaal (folk tunes) but had no touch of Indian classical music. So Maharaj instructed Premanand Swami, Muktanand Swami, Brahmanand Swami, Bhumanand Swami, Devanand Swami and many others to master classical music. Many paramhansas attained mastery in vocal and instrumental music. They played instruments like the sitar, sarod, sarangi, tabla, etc. As a result, a rich treasure of thousands of padas composed in various raags are widely available throughout the sampradaya. All these composi-

- 4 - tions were sung by the paramhansas in the presence of Maharaj. In those days these paramhansas of Maharaj had earned great fame and name as distinguised singers and musicians. Premanand Swami instantly composed and sang eight pads starting with Vandu Sahajanand rasrup... while focusing on the murti of Maharaj. When these eight pads were over, Maharaj could not hide his joy. He said to Swami, Hearing these kirtans, I thought this sadhu has so much focus on the murti of God, that I should get up and prostrate to him. If one meditates on God in the way described in these pads, one is liberated from the clutches of kal, karma and maya. 2. The devotees apologized to Acharya Ayodhyaprasadji Maharaj. (4/29-30) A. He learned a little Sanskrit also, as per the wish of Maharaj. Once, Maharaj called him in his presence and asked him to compose kirtans. Although he hadn t studied the pingal branch of music he started composing kirtans as per the wish of Maharaj. He minutely observed all the parts of Maharaj s body and the first kirtan was a beautiful one describing the murti of Maharaj. Maharaj was extremely pleased on hearing it. But his name Nijbodhanand appearing towards the end of the kirtan did not rhyme properly, so Maharaj said, Just as word Brahma, Mukta, Nishkula rhyme properly, the word Prema will also rhyme. So from today your name is Premanand. Once, in one of the kirtans he referred to Chandrasakhi, one of the gopis of Shri Krishna. Maharaj was greatly impressed by his premlakshana bhakti- intense affection and devotion- and called him by the name of Premsakhi. Maharaj directed him to write kirtans using both these names. (2) Once, some musicians from Gwalior reached Gadhada at noon to see Shriji Maharaj and expressed their earnest desire to listen the music of Premanand Swami. Maharaj told Premanand Swami to sing bhairavi rag. The musicians were amused but the moment Premanand Swami began to sing the surrounding mood changed and everyone experienced the atmosphere of dawn. (8) Conclusion: In this way both internal and external structure of the temple attracted each visitor which led the way towards devotion and respectful salutation towards our spiritual Guru Pramukh Swami Maharaj. 2. Inner call of upasana by Shastriji Maharaj: (1) Bhagwan Swaminarayan in Vachnamrut Gadhada I-27 says - Everyone wish to pray but there is difference in understanding. If one understands then the goal of life becomes easy to achieve this goal means full stop to every obstacle so Shastriji Maharaj understood the task of spreading upasana and leading path towards salvation. (2) This pure understanding Shastriji Maharaj named Upasana. One can not achieve anything without upasana quoted in Vachnamrut Gadhada Pratham 56. One should keep or believe in strength of upasana. In the spiritual achievement the main goal is to achieve ekantik dharma means knowledge, sacrifice dharma and devotion. All this can be attained only by upasana by understanding the great saint. (3) What is upasana? Shastriji Maharaj says explaining upasana, without gaining (getting) oneness with Akshar one can not be stable in understanding the best of Upasana. So in Vachanamrut Gadhada I-71, Shriji Maharaj ascended (took birth) on this earth along with his Akshardham. One can attain salvation only by knowing Akshar (Gunatitanand Swami). So one should recognize and create oneness with Akshar and do the upasana of Purushottam is the real upasana. One needs to understand only thing that Maharaj is Purushottam and Gunatitanand Swami is Mul-Akshar, which is the end of the self-realization. (4) One can not attain salvation, if one fails to understand Maharaj as sarvopari. In the same way, it is equally important to know Gunatitanad Swami as Akshar one can not get right for Parabrahman s devotion and can not go to Akshardham as well as can t remain in the service of Shriji Maharaj. (Swami ni vatu 3/12) We are thankful to Shastriji Maharaj to gift us with the knowledge of understanding upasana. (5) Clarification in upasana:- If the oneness with whom we

- 8 - have to, if we don t know him, then how can we attain the oneness of Akshar Brahman? So the importance of Gunatitanand Swami, neither the principle of Akshar Purushottam is not reduced even a bit. He cleared the doubt about Akshar Purushottam principle saying, Shriji Maharaj is sarvopari (Avtar na avtari). Know him as Purushottam and Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami is Mul-Akshar and always in the service of Maharaj since generations, but he was never recognized as Bhagwan. This type of understanding is very important to attain salvation. (6) Clear principle s darshan:- True firmness and clear objective in spreading upasana in the year 1968 on the day of full moon of Kartik month at Bochasan samaiya Swamishri cleared it through the example of Raavan and Surpankha and explained the form of Akshar Purushottam Swaroop and no form should be ignored, if not, the path of salvation would be very difficult. Shastriji Maharaj said, I have explained the understanding of pious principle. Bhagwan is always present in the form of Satpurush, this principle Bhagatji Maharaj explained at Gadhada in the company of saints according to Vach. Gadhada Sec I-27. At Nadiad the principle of Pragat Bhagwan and importance or glory of attaining salvation is explained in Vachanamrut Gadhada Sec I-21 (Twenty one). (7) Shastriji Maharaj did not exaggerate the principle of upasana and the importance of Guru nor he disgraced Maharaj. He said, There is only God and he is Sahajanand and nobody else will replace Maharaj now and even in future too and if someone thinks himself God than it will equal to killing 500 paramhansas. In this way he revealed his internal secret.(excitement) Shastriji Maharaj refused to give his foot print to the devotee of Africa. There is no selfish motive behind this. This was proved in the letter written by Nirgun Swami. There is no necessity to worry about people abusing us. Finally truth always wins. (8) In this way Shastriji Maharaj sacrificed his life to enlighten the path of upasana for the devotees. We can not oblige Shashtriji Maharaj for his contribution towards the Sanstha. He paved the way to Akshardham easily for all the devotees. He become the principle path of Shriji Maharaj. Our crores of salutation to this type of man of principle Shastriji Maharaj 3. Pramukh Swami Maharaj: A mountain of humility: (1) Mountain sumeru means Meru Which always remains firm sometimes the mountain may move but conscious of satpurush is like sumeru mountain.
