No.2,p.564 Opening Prayer Let us pray [for the glory promised by the birth of Christ] Lord God, we praise you for creating man, and still more for restoring him in Christ. Your Son shared our weakness: may we share his glory, for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. r Amen., Alternative Opening Prayer Let us pray [in the joy of Christmas because the Son of God lives among us] God of love, Father of all, the darkness that covered the earth has given way to the bright dawn of your Word made flesh. Make us a people of this light. Make us faithful to your Word, that we may bring your life to the waiting world. Grant this through Christ our Lord. r Amen., First Reading Is 52:7-10 All the ends of the earth will behold the salvation of our God. A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah HOW beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings glad tidings, announcing peace, bearing good news, announcing salvation, and saying to Zion, Your God is King! 53

Your sentinels raise a cry, together they shout for joy, for they see directly, before their eyes, the LORD restoring Zion. Break out together in song, O ruins of Jerusalem! For the LORD comforts his people, he redeems Jerusalem. The LORD has bared his holy arm in the sight of all the nations; all the ends of the earth will behold the salvation of our God. A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews BROTHERS and sisters: In times past, God spoke in partial and various ways to our ancestors through the prophets; in these last days, he has spoken to us through the Son, whom he made heir of all things and through whom he created the universe, who is the refulgence of his glory, the very imprint of his being, and who sustains all things by his mighty word. When he had accomplished purification from sins, he took his seat at the right hand of the Majesty on high, as far superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say: You are my son; this day I have begotten you? Or again: I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me? And again, when he leads the firstborn into the world, he says: Let all the angels of God worship him. The word of the Lord. r Thanks be to God., Alleluia r Alleluia, alleluia. A holy day has dawned upon us. Come, you nations, and adore the Lord. For today a great light has come upon the earth. r Alleluia, alleluia.,

IN the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. [A man named John was sent from God. He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to testify to the light.] The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came to be through him, but the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him. But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name, who were born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man s decision but of God.

Document3 10/28/03 2:39 PM Page 57 A B C CHRISTMAS (Mass During Day) 57 And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father s only Son, full of grace and truth. [John testified to him and cried out, saying, This was he of whom I said, The one who is coming after me ranks ahead of me because he existed before me. From his fullness we have all received, grace in place of grace, because while the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. The only Son, God, who is at the Father s side, has revealed him.] The Gospel of the Lord. r Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.. No. 14, p. 570 In the profession of faith, all genuflect at the words, and became man. Prayer Over the Gifts Almighty God, the saving work of Christ made our peace with you. May our offering today renew that peace within us and give you perfect praise. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. r Amen.. No. 21, p. 575 (Pref. P 3-5) When Eucharistic Prayer I is used, the special Christmas form of In union with the whole Church is said. Communion Ant. Ps 98:3 All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God., Prayer After Communion Father, the child born today is the Savior of the world.

D Let us pray for the coming of the kingdom as Jesus taught us. Priest and People: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Priest: Deliver us, Lord, from every evil, and grant us peace in our day. In your mercy keep us free from sin and protect us from all anxiety as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. 617

Document3 10/28/03 2:39 PM Page 618 618 COMMUNION RITE People: For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. 25 SIGN OF PEACE The priest says the prayer for peace: Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles: I leave you peace, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and grant us the peace and unity of your kingdom where you live for ever and ever. People: Amen. Priest: The peace of the Lord be with you always. People: And also with you. Deacon (or priest): Let us offer each other the sign of peace. The people exchange a sign of peace and love, according to local custom. 26 BREAKING OF THE BREAD Then the following is sung or said: People: Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: grant us peace. The hymn may be repeated until the breaking of the bread is finished, but the last phrase is always: Grant us peace. Meanwhile the priest breaks the host over the paten and places a small piece in the chalice, saying inaudibly:

Document3 10/28/03 2:39 PM Page 619 RECEPTION OF COMMUNION 619 May this mingling of the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ bring eternal life to us who receive it. 27 PRAYERS BEFORE COMMUNION Before communion, the priest says inaudibly one of the following prayers: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, by the will of the Father and the work of the Holy Spirit your death brought life to the world. By your holy body and blood free me from all my sins and from every evil. Keep me faithful to your teaching, and never let me be parted from you. OR Lord Jesus Christ, with faith in your love and mercy I eat your body and drink your blood. Let it not bring me condemnation, but health in mind and body. 28 RECEPTION OF COMMUNION The priest genuflects. Holding the host elevated slightly over the paten, the priest says: Priest: This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. Priest and People (once only): Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed. Before receiving communion, the priest says inaudibly: KNEEL May the body of Christ bring me to everlasting life. May the blood of Christ bring me to everlasting life.

The Apostles Creed The Confiteor An Act of Faith OMY God, I firmly believe that You are one God in three Divine Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; I believe that Your Divine Son become Man, and died for our sins, and that He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the Holy Catholic Church teaches because You have revealed them, Who can neither deceive nor be deceived. An Act of Hope OMY God, relying on Your almighty power and infinite mercy and promises, I hope to obtain pardon for my sins, the help of Your grace, and life everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer. An Act of Love OMY God, I love You above all things, with my whole heart and soul, because You are all-good and worthy of all love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of You. I forgive all who have injured me, and ask pardon of all whom I have injured.
