Let the Word Abide in You John 15:7 This is the second study message in this series on The Word of God. Last week, we looked at the fact that the Word of God is eternal and without error. We also looked at the fact that the Word of God is the foundation for our faith, and that is where we were when we came to the end of our study. In order to make sure that we do not miss this very, very important truth, we will take just a moment to review before we move forward. In our last study we looked at Hebrews 11:6 that says, without faith it is impossible to please [God]... And we tied that to Romans 10:17 that says, So, then, faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. And the natural conclusion is simply this: the Word provides the foundation for all divine contact. And that brings us to how the Word of God affects our prayer life. In Mark 11:24 Jesus said, Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. In Matthew 9:29 Jesus gave us this insight, According to your faith let it be to you. Faith is essential if you want your prayers to be answered. To have an effective prayer life, you have to know what God has said and believe it. It is impossible to pray effectively without a knowledge of Gods Word, because for the most part, prayers that are not based on the Word are prayers of unbelief. And the truth of the matter, most praying today is simply a rehearsal of the problem. Now listen and get this, God already knows the problem! What He wants is for you to open the door of faith, so He can move into your life and solve the problem. Ever so often, I hear people praying for more faith. And they say things, Like God give me more faith that I might trust You more. But faith does not come by praying; it comes by hearing the Word of God. The only way you can obtain faith is to hear the Word preached or take to it yourself and spend time in it! Now you have to be real careful right here, because you can spend a lifetime studying the Word like a textbook just to gain natural knowledge; just to learn facts and it won't generate faith or do anything else for you spiritually. For the Word to be effective in your life, you have to allow it to become more than just a book to you. You must treat it as though God is speaking to you personally through its pages. You must allow God's Words to Page 1

jump out of your Bible and into your heart, so they can abide and take up residence there. God's Word can do that because His words are not just tired, dead, old phrases. They are supernatural words that originated in heaven. As Hebrews 4:12 says, For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power (making it active, operative, energizing, and effective); it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the breath of life (soul) and (the immortal) spirit, and of joints and marrow (of the deepest parts of our nature), exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart. All of God's words have had life in them from the moment He first spoke them. And even though they have been written for thousands of years, those words are still as powerful and full of life today as they were the day God spoke them. Listen to what we have been told in Proverbs 4:20-22, My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. Jesus took that very same scripture and made it personal to himself in John 6:63, The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. God wants us to understand that there is life and power in His Word. God s Word is a never-failing remedy for any situation or circumstance that might come your way in life, including sickness and disease. So when you take the words that are in the Bible and put them in your heart and in your mouth, they bring supernatural things to pass. In Mark 4 Jesus gives us the parable of the sower, which takes us back to Isaiah 55:10-11, For as the rain and snow come down from the heavens, and return not there again, but water the earth and make it bring forth and sprout, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, So shall My word be that goes forth out of My mouth: it shall not return to Me void [without producing any effect, useless], but it shall accomplish that which I please and purpose, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it. Remember though, if you want the Word to produce those kinds of powerful results in your life, you can't be content just to "know" it. You must believe it and meditate on it until it abides in you so that you will obey it. 1 John 2:24 puts it this way, Let that, therefore, abide in you which you have heard from the beginning. If that which you have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, you also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father. The secret to the abiding life is to put the Word into your heart in abundance, so it will dwell and come alive in you! Listen to God s instructions in Joshua 1:7-8, Turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may Page 2

prosper wherever you go. This Book...shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe and do according to all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall deal wisely and have good success. David put it this in Psalm 119:11, Your word I have hidden in my heart, hat I might not sin against You. I realize, of course, that you can't walk around reading your Bible twenty-four hours a day. But if you are committed to abiding in the Word, you will find the short amount of time that it takes to put it into your heart. If you were to set aside just five to seven minutes a day you could read a chapter from the Bible. Five to seven minutes a day! Another way is to get the Bible on CD and listen to it while driving back and forth to work. If nothing else, get the sermon CDs and listen to them while driving back and forth to work, or while you are setting at your desk, etc. How do you know if the Word is abiding in you? It begins to speak to you, as seen in Proverbs 6:20-22, My son, keep your father s command, and do not forsake the law of your mother. Bind them continually upon your heart; tie them around your neck. When you roam, they will lead you; when you sleep, they will keep you; and when you awake, they will speak with you. Now listen and get this, the Word that is abiding in you, that is alive in you, is the Word that talks to you. It's the Word that leads you moment by moment as you go about your day. Remember, what David said in Psalm 119:11, Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You. That truth is made clear in John 14:26, But the Comforter, who is the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatever I have said unto you. Ladies and gentlemen, you cannot not remember what you do not know! And the only way the Holy Spirit can bring the Word of God to your remembrance is to have it abiding in your heart! This is exactly that same thing Jesus talked about in Luke 6:45 when He said, for out of the abundance of the heart (the) mouth speaks. The Bible teaches us in Matthew 4 that when Jesus was tempted by the devil in the wilderness, He overcame Satan with the Word of God. Over and over Jesus responded to His tempter, It is written If you are in a situation where you need a scripture to come out of your mouth and you find yourself speaking doubt and fear instead, that is a sure-fire indication that the Word of God is not abiding in you! Page 3

Listen to what Jesus said in Mark 11:22-24, Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, Be removed and be cast into the sea, and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. In Mark 11:23 there is one believe and three says in some form or other. What did Jesus say in Luke 6:45? He said, for out of the abundance of the heart (the) mouth speaks. When we live our life and the Word of God is not abiding in our hearts, more often than not, we have no defense against the things that Satan brings against us. 1 John 2:14 says, the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the wicked one. Too often, Satan uses to circumstances in our life to overwhelm us and to steal our faith. And when that happens, we hear words like impossible. But, according to Matthew 19:26 with God all things are possible. But, then, in Mark 9:23 Jesus said, Everything is possible for him who believes. So where do you get this kind of faith? From the Word of God! Ever so often I hear people make statements like, Well, I just don t have enough faith. Well, that just is not true! The Bible says in Romans 12:3 that God has dealt to every man the measure of faith. Not only that, Ephesians 3:12 tell us that we have the faith of Christ, In whom (Christ Jesus) we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him. Wow! Did you know that was in the Bible? Having said that, do you think Jesus Christ ever lacked faith? Did He ever have a problem trusting the Father? Did He ever have a problem with His faith failing Him? The answer to these questions is no! Look again at what we are told in Ephesians 3:12. The Bible says, In (Christ) we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him. Listen to Galatians 2:20, I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. Child of God, our boldness does not lie in our own faith, which can quickly melt into fear. Our confidence to stand in the face of Satan, to stand in the face of sickness and disease, to stand in the face of criticism and opposition, and, according to Ephesians 6:13, having done all, to stand, we must tap into a faith greater than ourselves. We must tap into the faith of Jesus who lives and abides within us! Page 4

You will recall that when Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, He wrestled with His own human will in those hours of agony. Mark 14:36 tells us that finally, He submitted Himself fully to the Father in His flesh and said, Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will. What was it that Jesus desired to be taken from Him? What was the cup He did not want to drink? Jesus was not just wrestling with the idea of going to the cross, the pain of the scourging; crown of thorns on His head, or nails driven into His hands and feet. Jesus was wrestling with becoming sin. In all of eternity, He had never known sin. In His earthly life, He had lived without sin or guile. Now the Father was asking Him to take on the sins of the whole world and to become sin. It was such a deplorable concept to Him that He prayed, "Pass this bitter cup from Me. In all of eternity, the Son of God had never been separated from the Father, not even for a moment. In His walk on earth, He had lived in complete communion with the Father, saying and doing only what the Father led Him to say and do. Now the Father was asking Him to become sin, which meant to be separated from the Father. For Jesus to pour Himself out completely, to be stripped of all glory and honor and to die as a common thief, and then to go down into the depths of the grave and face hell in our place, was an act of supreme faith. Everything Jesus faced in the hours and days after the Garden of Gethsemane required faith, total faith and nothing but faith, that the Father was going to accept the sacrifice of His life on the cross, resurrect Him from death, defeat the enemy, and unlock the gates of hell so that He might take captive what the devil had held in captivity. Furthermore, He had faith that the Father was going to fully restore Him to His position in heaven, seated at the Father's right hand. Jesus knew the reality of what was ahead for Him. Nevertheless, He continued to speak His faith, as seen in John 2:19, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Listen to John 10:17-18, I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man can take it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. Listen to Matthew 12:40, For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. When it came right down to it, the cross was more terrible than even Jesus had anticipated. In Matthew 27:46 He cried out to the Father, "Eli, Eli, Page 5

lama sabachthani which is to say, "My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?" There was no agony as great as being forsaken by the Father. In the end, Jesus hung His head on His shoulders and said, "It is finished." And what did Jesus have to hold onto in those darkest moments? Only one thing - His faith in God's Word. His friends vanished. His disciples cowered in fear in a locked upper room. His strength ebbed from His muscles; His blood flowed from His wounds. His breath left in one long final exhale from His body. The Father turned away at the sight of the sin He became. And in the end, the only thing remaining was His faith in God's Word. How do you and I get that kind of faith? Two ways: by receiving Jesus Christ as our personal Savior, and abiding in the Word. If you have never been saved, why not today? Everyone please stand for prayer. Father, I confess Your Word is true. Thank You for the gift of faith. Give me the determination to make time for Your Word in my daily life. In Jesus name. Amen.
