The Meaning Of The Resurrection

Transcription:

Peter and Paul Did they preach the Same Message? I. Peter meets Cornelius, a Roman Centurion. A. Acts 10:25-26 5 And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him. 26 But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man. B. Cornelius gets saved. Notice that the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. C. Acts 10:39-45 39 And we are witnesses of all things which he (Jesus) did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: 40 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; 41 Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. 42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. 43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission {remission, forgiveness, liberty} of sins. 44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. Note that a Jew would be saved by believing, then baptized, then get the Holy Ghost. But Cornelius and the other Gentiles believed and the Holy Ghost fell on them. So the gift of the Holy Ghost was poured out on the Gentiles, then Peter baptized them with water. Acts 10:47-48 47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

Page 2 We see here that the first Gentiles were saved outside a Jewish Synagogue. II. What message did Peter Preach in Acts 10? A. Acts 10:37-43 37 That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; 38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. 39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: 40 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; 41 Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. 42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. 43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission{gr. Aphesis = remission, forgiveness, liberty} of sins. B. Peter mentioned to Cornelius and those Gentiles who were listening, that they hanged Jesus on a tree: Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; Here is what Peter says after Cornelius was saved with those hearing with him. Acts 15:9 9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. C. Is The Apostle of the Gentiles preaching the same message?

Page 3 We are looking for the death and resurrection. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 KJV Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. {keep...: or, hold fast} {what: Gr. by what speech} 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: Romans 10:12 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. Romans 3:22 22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: D. Jesus died and shed His blood to pay our sin debt. Ephesians 1:7 7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; Was Cornelius s sins forgiven? Yes, because the word remission means forgiveness. Paul says that we have the forgiveness of sins also. III. Let s look at Paul and Peter and we will find that after the Cross, they were preaching basically the same message; however, Paul was preaching to the Uncircumcision (Gentiles) and Peter to the Circumcision (Jews) Galatians 1:6-9 6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the

Page 4 gospel of Christ. 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. Note: If any man preach any other Gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. Keep this in mind. Peter was a man. Galatians 1:8-9 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. After Peter and Paul had gone to Jerusalem and met with the Apostles, we read Galatians 2:7-9 7 But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter; 8 (For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:) 9 And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision. We see in these verses that Paul went to the Uncircumcision (Gentiles) and Peter went to the Circumcision (Jews) preaching the same message, because Peter was not accursed. IV. I would like for us to go to 1 Corinthians 15:1-14 and I want to point out some truths that may help you see that they preached the same message after the Cross. In John 19:30, we find that was when Jesus gave up the ghost(died). John 19:30 30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

Page 5 The New Testament started when Jesus died. According to Hebrews 9:16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. We read earlier in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 about the gospel. Now we will continue with verses 5-14. 1 Corinthians 15:5-14 5 And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: 6 After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. 7 After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. 8 And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. {one...: or, an abortive} 9 For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. 11 Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed. 12 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: 14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. Paul says in that all these saw Jesus after His resurrection, and they were preaching. Now Note Verse 11-14. Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed. (12) Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? (13) But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: (14) And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.

Page 6 V. Lets Look at some similar or same things that Paul and Peter Preached after the Cross. A. Peculiar People Titus 2:14 14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. 1 Peter 2:9 9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: B. Both Paul and Peter speak of the Liberty in the Believer. 2 Corinthians 3:17 17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. Galatians 5:13 13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. 1 Peter 2:16 16 As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. C. Please Note That Paul and Peter Preached in Galatia. Galatians 1:1-2 KJV Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;) 2 And all the brethren which are with me, unto the churches of Galatia: 1 Peter 1:1 KJV Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, D. Paul and Peter Preached Grace and Peace.

Page 7 Romans 1:7 7 To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 1:2 2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, Folks, Peter is not preaching Law as some would say. This is after the Cross, and not before the Cross. E. Paul and Peter preached about being dead to sin. Romans 6:2 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 1 Peter 2:24 24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. F. We have always heard that about babes in Christ by Paul. Well, Peter also mentions the same. 1 Corinthians 3:1 KJV And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. 1 Peter 2:2 2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: VI. The Gospel of God is Preached by Both Paul and Peter. A. The Gospel of God preached. 1 Thessalonians 2:9 9 For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.

Pae 8 1 Peter 4:17 7 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? VII. Spiritual Sacrifices Mentioned by both Paul and Peter and a Heavenly inheritance. A. Spiritual Sacrifices Romans 12:1 KJV Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 1 Peter 2:5 5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. B. Inheritance Colossians 3:24 24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. 1 Peter 1:4 4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, VIII. Paul and Peter Preached about Family Issues. A. Ephesians 5:22-23 22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. B. 1 Peter 3:1 KJV Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;

Page 9 IX. Conclusion There are so much more to cover, but time limit is about out for this session. Paul and Peter says to whom that are preaching. 2 Corinthians 13:11 11 Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you. 1 Peter 3:8-9 8 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: 9 Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.
