Biblical Names of the Holy Spirit Part 1 Pastor Eddie Turner Wednesday, April 12, 2017 John 14:16-17(NLT)- And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn t looking for him and doesn t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. John 14:17(NLT)- 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn t looking for him and doesn t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. The Holy Spirit is part of the Godhead having the same Characteristics of God the Father and God the Son-Jesus. Eternal- endless; without beginning and without end Gen. 1:1-2(NLT)- In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Omnipresent- all present in all places always Psalm 139:7-10(NKJV)- Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? 8 If I ascend into heaven, you are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, you are there. 9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, 10 Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall
hold me. Omniscience- possessing infinite, all awareness, understanding and insight. ------------- John 14:26(NLT)- But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative that is, the Holy Spirit he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you. Omnipotent- all powerful ---- Luke 1:35(NLT)- The angel replied, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So, the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. The Trinity is a spirit reality which has no physical equivalent. Luke 3:21-22(NLT)- One day when the crowds were being baptized, Jesus himself was baptized. As he was praying, the heavens opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit, in bodily form, descended on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy. Biblical Names of the Holy Spirit 1). The Spirit- The word spirit means breath or wind. The Holy Spirit is the outbreathing of God. John 3:6-8(NLT)- Humans can reproduce only human life, but the
Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. 7 So don t be surprised when I say, You must be born again. 8 The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can t explain how people are born of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit like the wind is invisible, you can t see the wind but you can see its effects. Understand something very unusual about the wind; you can t dictate what you want the wind to do, the wind does as it wills. 1 Cor. 12:11(NKJV)- 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills 2). The Spirit of God 1 Cor. 3:16(NLT)- Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? ---------------- 3). The Spirit of the Lord/Jehovah - The name Jehovah implies Covenant Keeper. - Isa 11:2(NLT)- And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. -- Nehemiah 1:5(NLT)- O Lord, God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps his covenant of unfailing love with those who love
him and obey his commands -- Deut.7:9(NLT)- Understand, therefore, that the Lord your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey his commands. -- 4). The Spirit of the Living God -- 2 Cor. 3:2-3(NLT)- The only letter of recommendation we need is you yourselves. Your lives are a letter written in our hearts; everyone can read it and recognize our good work among you. 3 Clearly, you are a letter from Christ showing the result of our ministry among you. This letter is written not with pen and ink, but with the Spirit of the living God. It is carved not on tablets of stone, but on human hearts. -- The significance of this name of the Spirit is that the Apostle Paul is contrasting between the Word of God written with ink, and the word of God written on the heart by the Holy Spirit. - Many people view God/Jesus/the Word of God as historical concepts only. Yet the Holy Spirit is referred to the Spirit of the Living Godwho desires to make God real to us. - Seven Ways God s Divine Law has been Revealed to Mankind: 1). Written on Nature Psalm 19:1(NLT)- The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship - 2). Written on our conscience
- Rom. 2:14-15(NLT)- Even Gentiles, who do not have God s written law, show that they know his law when they instinctively obey it, even without having heard it. 15 They demonstrate that God s law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right -- 3). Written on Tables of Stone - Exodus 24:12(NLT)- Then the Lord said to Moses, Come up to me on the mountain. Stay there, and I will give you the tablets of stone on which I have inscribed the instructions and commands so you can teach the people. -- 4). The Holy Scriptures -- Rom. 15:4(NLT)- Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God s promises to be fulfilled. -- 2 Tim. 3:16(NLT)- 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. -- 5). Jesus Christ the Word in the Flesh -- John 1:1-4(NLT)- In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He existed in the beginning with God. 3 God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. 4 The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. --
John 1:10-14(NLT)- 10 He came into the very world he created, but the world didn t recognize him. 11 He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. 12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. 13 They are reborn not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God. 14 So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father s one and only Son. 6). Written on the Heart Heb. 8:8-10(NLT)- But when God found fault with the people, he said: The day is coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah. 9 This covenant will not be like the one I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand and led them out of the land of Egypt. They did not remain faithful to my covenant, so I turned my back on them, says the Lord. 10 But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their minds, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 7). Outward Christian Life - 2 Cor.
