Glory, The Revelation of God s Glory Psalm 19:1 The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. In this psalm, David meditates on God's creation, God's Word, His own sinfulness, And God's forgiveness. As God reveals himself through nature (19:1-6), We learn about his power and our finiteness. As God reveals himself through Scripture (19:7-11), We learn about his holiness and our sinfulness. As God reveals himself through daily experiences (19:12-14), We learn about his gracious forgiveness that frees us from guilt. 19:1-6 we are surrounded by fantastic displays of God's craftsmanship The heavens give dramatic evidence of his existence, his power, his love, his care. To say that the universe happened by chance is absurd. Its design, intricacy, and orderliness point to a personally involved Creator. As you 2

look at God's handiwork in nature and the heavens, thank him for such magnificent beauty and the truth it reveals about the Creator. Genesis 1:31 All that God had made was good. God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. God saw that all he had created was excellent in every way. You are part of God's creation, and he is pleased with how he made you. If at times you feel worthless or of little value, remember that God made you for a good reason. You are valuable to him. Psalm 29:3-9 The voice of the Lord is powerful The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; The God of glory thunders, The LORD is over many waters. The voice of the LORD is powerful, the voice of the LORD is majestic. The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; Yes, the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. The cedars of Lebanon were giant trees that could grow to 120 feet in height and 30 feet in circumference. A voice that could split the cedars of Lebanon would be a truly powerful voice the voice of God. All that was impressive to people was under God's complete control. Review of God s creation Psalm 104:1-4 Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, You are very great; you are clothed with splendor and majesty, Covering Yourself with light as with a cloak, stretching out heaven like a tent curtain. He lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters; He makes the clouds His chariot; He walks upon the wings of the wind. 3

This psalm is a poetic summary of God's creation of the world as found in the first chapter of Genesis. What God created each day is mentioned by the writer as a reason to praise God. Day one, God created light (104:1, 2; Genesis 1:3); Day two, the heavens and the waters (104:2, 3; Genesis 1:6); Day three, land and vegetation (104:6-18; Genesis 1:9-13); Day four, the sun, moon, and stars (104:19-23; Genesis 1:14-16); Day five, fish and birds (104:25, 26; Genesis 1:20-23); and on Day six, animals, people, and food to sustain them (104:21-24, 27-30; Genesis 1:24-31 Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. What kind of God does nature reveal? Nature shows us a God of might, intelligence, and intricate detail; A God of order and beauty; A God who controls powerful forces. That is general revelation. Through special revelation (the Bible and the coming of Jesus), we learn about God's love and forgiveness and the promise of eternal life. God has graciously given us many sources that we might come to believe in him. Exodus 15:11 No other God is like the Lord God. "Who is like you among the gods, O LORD? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, Awesome in praises, working wonders? 4

Music played an important part in Israel's worship and celebration. Singing was an expression of love and thanks, and it was a creative way to pass down oral traditions. Some say this song of Moses is the oldest recorded song in the world. It was a festive epic poem celebrating God's victory, lifting the hearts and voices of the people outward and upward. After having been delivered from great danger, they sang with joy! Psalms and hymns can be great ways to express relief, praise, and thanks when you have been through trouble. You shall see the glory of the Lord. Exodus 16:7 And in the morning you will see the glory of the LORD, for He hears your grumblings against the LORD; and what are we, that you grumble against us?" God continually warned the people to avoid false religions and false gods. In Egypt they had been surrounded by idols and sorcerers, but leaving that land did not mean they were free from pagan religious influences. The land of Canaan was just as infested with idol worship. God knew his people needed extra strength, so he continually emphasized guarding against the influence of pagan religions. The Glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle Exodus 40:34-35 Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. The Tabernacle was God's home on earth. He filled it with his glory the overpowering sense of his presence. Almost 500 years later, Solomon built the Temple, which replaced the Tabernacle as the central place of worship. God also filled the Temple with his glory (2 Chronicles 5:13, 14). 5

But when Israel turned from God, his glory and presence departed from the Temple, and it was destroyed by invading armies (2 Kings 25). The Temple was rebuilt in 515 B.C. God's glory returned in even greater splendor nearly five centuries later when Jesus Christ, God's Son, entered it and taught. When Jesus was crucified, God's glory again left the Temple. However, God no longer needed a physical building after Jesus rose from the dead. God's temple now is his church, the body of believers. 2 Chronicles 7:1-3 Now when Solomon had finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the LORD filled the house. The priests could not enter into the house of the LORD because the glory of the LORD filled the LORD'S house. All the sons of Israel, seeing the fire come down and the glory of the LORD upon the house, bowed down on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave praise to the LORD, saying, "Truly He is good, truly His lovingkindness is everlasting." Isaiah 43:6-7 "I will say to the north, 'Give them up!' And to the south, 'Do not hold them back ' bring my sons from afar and My daughters from the ends of the earth, Everyone who is called by My name, And whom I have created for My glory, Whom I have formed, even whom I have made." Isaiah 46:13 God s glory is seen in you. "I bring near my righteousness, it is not far off; and my salvation will not delay and I will grant salvation in Zion, and My glory for Israel. 6

Israel's task was to be a witness (44:8), telling the world who God is and what he had done. Believers today share the responsibility of being God's witnesses. Do people know what God is like through your words and example? They cannot see God directly, but they can see him reflected in you. Moses asked to see God s glory. Exodus 33:18-23 Then Moses said, "I pray you, show me your glory!" And He said, "I Myself will make all My goodness pass before you, and will proclaim the name of the LORD before you; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show compassion on whom I will show compassion." But He said, "You cannot see my face, for no man can see me and live!. Moses wanted to see God's glory. He wanted assurance of God's presence with him, Aaron, and Joshua, and also he desired to know that presence experientially. Because we are finite and morally imperfect, we cannot exist and see God as he is. To see God from behind means we can only see where God has passed by. We can only know him by what he does and how he acts. We cannot comprehend God as he really is apart from Jesus Christ (John 14:9). Jesus promised to show himself to those who love him (John 14:21). We are transformed into God s glory. 2 Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit. The glory that the Spirit imparts to the believer is more excellent and lasts longer than the glory that Moses experienced. By gazing at the nature of God with unveiled minds, we can be more like him. 7

In the Good News, we see the truth about Christ, and it transforms us morally as we understand and apply it. Through learning about Christ's life, we can understand how wonderful God is and what he is really like. As our knowledge deepens, the Holy Spirit helps us to change. Becoming Christlike is a progressive experience (see Romans 8:29; Galatians 4:19; Philippians 3:21; 1 John 3:2). The more closely we follow Christ, the more we will be like him. Ephesians 1:12 To the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ would be to the praise of His glory. The Glory of Christ is given to all generations. Ephesians 3:21 To Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen. Paul first lays a doctrinal foundation and then makes practical applications of the truths he has presented. 8

Stephen sees Jesus standing at the right hand of the father. Acts 7:55 But being full of the Holy Spirit, he gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God; Stephen saw the glory of God and Jesus, the Messiah, standing at God's right hand. Stephen's words are similar to Jesus' words spoken before the high council (Matthew 26:64; Mark 14:62; Luke 22:69). May we continually see the glory of God through Jesus Christ. Prayer to salvation. Lord God in heaven, I come to you in the name of Jesus. I acknowledge to you that I am a sinner, and I am sorry for my sins and the life that I have lived; I need your forgiveness. I believe that your only begotten Son Jesus Christ shed His precious blood on the cross at Calvary and died for my sins, and I am now willing to turn from my sin. Your Holy Word declares in Romans 10:9 that if we confess the Lord our God and believe in our hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead, we shall be saved. Right now I confess Jesus as the Lord of my soul. With my heart, I believe that God raised Jesus from the dead. This very moment I accept Jesus Christ as my own personal Savior and according to His Word, right now I am saved. Amen 9
