A Word from Our Sr. Pastor... TIDINGS Vol. 69 No. 1

As you are reading this, Christmas Day is over, but the Christmas season is not. We are still celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, God in human form, God with us. So much of this season is about traditions: family traditions, old familiar hymns, the same passage from the Gospel of Luke read in church... If not the rest of the year, this is the time when many of us want things to be the same as they always were. Maybe because that gives us a sense of comfort, lets us believe that all is well. And there's nothing wrong with that. Especially during scary, uncertain times like these, we need to believe that all is well, that there are some "things", some values and some people we can rely on. BUT the birth of Jesus Christ was a very uncomfortable event. Not only for those who were actively involved in it (Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, the wise men, even poor, naked little baby Jesus) - but for the entire world it was quite disconcerting. Because it changed everything. And we neglect to see how radically the birth of Jesus questioned not only the powers that be, but society as a whole! The Virgin birth has long been interpreted to mean that Jesus was born "without sin." Even though nowhere in the Bible does it say that procreation (or, dare I say it: sex) is a sin. Quite the contrary! "Be fruitful and multiply", God said to humankind in Genesis 1:28, without any mention of marriage! The concept of Jesus being born without sin is a human interpretation from a certain time and place. We live in a different time and place now. It might be meaningful to look at the Virgin birth differently, whether we take it literally or not: No man was needed to create this child. Even the holy Spirit that "comes upon" Mary is feminine in Hebrew thought. Basically, Mary was a single mother. Joseph was kind and faithful enough to accept her and her child and provide for them. And Biblical tradition needed Joseph to make sure that Jesus really was from the lineage of David. But other than that, there was no man involved in the birth of the Son of God. And even though to most of us Christmas is about coming home, to Jesus, Mary and Joseph it was about leaving home, leaving behind what was familiar and comfortable. Traditional models of family and power and all material ways of finding comfort have been overcome in the birth of Jesus. Poverty, humility, and a willingness to respond to God's call took their place. May that be food for thought for us as we begin a new year this week: God does not believe in power, in getting comfortable, or in fear. God believes in love. God believes in us. God bless you, and all of us, with love, and with courage in 2017! Pastor Valeria

Thank You for Christmas Gifts Once again, I was humbled and overwhelmed by the generosity you showed me with cards, kind words, meaningful gifts and your monetary gift. They are a gesture of your appreciation and they mean more than you know. Thank you all. I look forward to another year together in ministry! Pastor Valeria Boston Women's March for America I will be participating in the march in Boston on January 21, along with members of other churches and other religious organizations. According to the organizers' website, "We march in solidarity with 100+ simultaneous women's marches around the world. In peace. Without partisanship. We march for equality, decency and justice." This is an opportunity for us as Christians, as Americans and as human beings to show the values that we believe in and to be an active part of our wider community in support of women, immigrants, people of color, people who identify as LGBTQIA and people with disabilities. To read more about the mission and purpose of this march, go to: http://bostonwomensmarchforamerica.org/march-mission/ If you are interested in participating, please contact me. Pastor Valeria. Festive Breads on Wednesday Mornings Pastor Valeria will be back at Festive Breads (299 W. Main St.) on Wednesday mornings from 8:30-10am, starting on January 3rd. Please join her for a cup of coffee or tea, and a chat! Wonderful Wednesdays may reconvene later in the year for another small group discussion series in the afternoon. Worship Services Sundays, 10am

January 1: Begin the New Year with an informal service and brunch in Fellowship Hall. Bring some noisemakers! You are also invited to bring a dish to share. January 8: The Baptism of Christ January 15: Second Sunday after Epiphany January 22: Third Sunday after Epiphany January 29: Fourth Sunday after Epiphany Note from Trinity's Vision Team We want to thank everyone who participated in the Vision Meeting in November. You gave us over 160 vision ideas on the Post-It notes for where you think Trinity will be in 5 years. The Vision Team went through all the ideas and matched them with Trinity's Core Values and Mission Statement and then put then into categories and looked for themes we could use in the Vision Statement. The themes we found range from participating in and supporting the community, to reaching out in the local area and beyond, to implementing innovative ideas for programs and worship within Trinity, and finally to updating and improving the building. The result of our work is the draft Vision Statement which is below. This statement is written as though the current year is 2022. Please read the statement and let us know if you have any feedback on the statement. This, along with all the vision ideas, will be used by the implementation team as we plan to implement the ideas over the next few years. Vision Team: Allyn Phelps Kelly Zajdel Valeria Schmidt Tom Danforth -------------------------------------------------------- Trinity Church, Northborough, MA -- 2022 Following Jesus' example, Trinity Church welcomes all of God's children. Young children are enticed with the warm, vibrant colors on the walls and in the play areas. The youth and teens feel comfortable and safe in the connected spaces while the programs remind them that they belong here. We celebrate being an Open and Affirming / Welcoming and Affirming Congregation and being a safe place for everyone whether marginalized or not. Everyone is served equally in our accessible and environmentally friendly building which honors God's creation. Trinity fills its people with the love of God through varied, exciting, and meaningful Worship and Music. Music moves us in moments of beauty and thrills us in moments of joy and exuberance. Each week we praise God with a variety of musical styles using the sound of singing, clapping, organ, piano, guitars and other instruments. Our services not only honor our traditions but push us to think beyond our customs with

experiences designed for all ages and backgrounds. We encourage and facilitate open and honest conversations in worship as well as in small groups, challenging each other to grow in our faith and in our commitment to Jesus. Trinity Church has become Northborough's newest community center meeting the material, emotional, and spiritual needs for the town. We're a place to come for a hot meal, to purchase affordable clothing, to listen to local music, or to just have a cup of coffee and good conversation, supported by an active and vibrant congregation. We connect to the community to determine needs and how we can help - not only financially, but with our actions and direct involvement. Trinity also looks beyond Northborough to Massachusetts, our country and the world to provide comfort and assistance and spread God's word.
