Weeds in Our Garden Farm Safety Activity Book

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Genesis 1:1 The prophet Jeremiah reminds us that the Lord has made the earth by his power, established the world by His wisdom and stretched out the heavens by His understanding (Jeremiah 51:15). The universe did not come about by accident. It was designed by God who planned its every detail. What are some examples of God s creativity that you have seen today? 2

And God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. Genesis 1:26 God has specifically given humans dominion over His earthly creation. He provided us with sufficient knowledge, motivation, skills, and strength to care for His creation, and our five senses to enjoy it. What are some ways that your family can demonstrate good stewardship over God s creation? 3

And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. Genesis 1:31 4 When God created the earth and everything in it, the results reflected his unlimited creativity and craftmanship. Nothing was left to chance. The earth was designed to be a wonderful place for us to live. Which of God s creations do you enjoy the most?

And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man saying: Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat; But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest there of thou shalt surely die. Genesis 2:15-17 God established a beautiful, peaceful place for man to live and a single, seemingly simple, rule to obey. Man was provided dominion over everything on earth and complete freedom with only one exception: he must not eat from a tree bearing fruit that had the ability to cause pain and death. Why do you think God gave us the choice of whether or not we would obey Him? 5

And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat. Genesis 3:6 6 The first act of human disobedience set into motion the breakdown of God s beautiful creation. It introduced shame, fear, dishonesty, conflict, pain, discomfort, sorrow and death. Did you know that every sickness, injury or death can be traced back to this one act of disobedience?

For we know that the whole of creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. Romans 8:22 We now live in a fallen and decaying world that will continue to be afflicted with problems. Undesirable events will occur that will bring painful moments to all of us. This includes storms, floods, fires, and unexpected injuries. No one will escape these times, and eventually death will come to everyone. What other examples of decay and disorder can you see in the world around us? 7

For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them. Ecclesiastes 9:12 8 None of us can predict when something hurtful will occur in our life. Not even our wealth, knowledge, possessions, relationships, nor even our faith can guarantee us security from physical harm or tragic events such as fires. This is well illustrated in the story of Job who lost his flocks to lightning and his children to a tornado. Can you remember some difficult or painful times in your life?

Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. Matthew 10:29-31 In this simple story Jesus illustrates that even though one of the sparrows did fall, God was aware of it. Just consider for a moment how much more aware God is of our falls, hurts, and illnesses because we are His children. Our earthly father is intended to be a reflection of our loving heavenly Father. How does your father remind you of God s love? 9

The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. Psalm 34:7 For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. Psalm 91:11 God promises that He will care for His children and that He will never leave them (Hebrews 13:5). Whether we are working in the fields or helping in the garden, He is always there. Even when difficult and painful moments come, He is still close by and cares about every detail of our life. In what ways does God protect you? 10

If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down; for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Matthew 4:6-7 We tempt God when our actions are unnecessarily dangerous or foolish and we expect His protection. Wrong choices often lead to painful consequences. Nowhere does God promise us protection from careless or reckless acts. Can you remember when you may have tempted God like this boy climbing on the windmill who could fall and be injured? 11

When thou buildest a new house, then thou shalt make a battlement (or railing) for thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thine house if any man fall from there. Deuteronomy 22:8 God gave us a free will and common sense and He expects us to use them both to protect ourselves and others from harm. Guards, shields, railings, fences, and gates protect us from hazards that may or may not be obvious. Many serious injuries could have been prevented if common hazards like belts and pulleys on farm machinery, pesticides, sharp power tools, and sources of heat and fire had been adequately guarded or protected. What are some potential hazards around your home? 12

If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. John 11:9-10 In this parable, Jesus illustrates both a natural law and a spiritual law. Failure to recognize and properly respond to the hazards of darkness often results in painful experiences such as accidents on the highway. What are some ways that we can protect ourselves from hazards associated with darkness? 13

Charity (love) suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil. I Corinthians 13:4-5 One of the most important ingredients to living at peace and being contented in a troubled world with all its unexpected problems is love. With love comes patience and a willingness to let others go first, or have their own way, even when you might be in the right. These qualities will remove many unnecessary hazards and confrontations from our lives. How can your anger or the desire to be first cause someone to be hurt? 14

As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbor to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve (handle), and lighteth upon his neighbor, that he die; he shall flee unto one of those cities (of refuge), and live. Deuteronomy 19:5 It is not for us to avenge the unintentional actions of others, especially out of anger for some hurt we have experienced. Both God s law and man s law make provisions for dealing with people who accidently harm another person. When you may be the offender, remember that a soft answer may turn away wrath (Proverbs 15:1). 15

Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? I Corinthians 3:16 Our bodies are important to God. He expects us to take good care of them by eating the right foods, getting adequate rest and exercise, avoiding harmful drugs and protecting ourselves from unnecessary hazards such as unguarded machinery. What are other ways that you might be harming God s temple? 16

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Exodus 20:12 Obedience to parents comes with a special promise not found in God s other commandments. Our parents care for us and desire the best for us. Their insight and wisdom can help us avoid or respond to many dangers that we will face in the years ahead. In what ways do you demonstrate obedience to your parents? 17

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety. Psalms 4:8 Safety and peaceful sleep are two of God s special blessings for which we should be thankful. As you close your eyes in sleep and the darkness closes around you, remember that God is still there. Have you recently thanked God for the protection He has provided you and your family? 18

PRODUCING SAFE AND HEALTHY FRUIT The Scriptures tell us that the characteristics of the fruit of a Godly life include: love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance (self control) (Galatians 5:22-23). After each fruit that God desires to produce in your life, provide an example of how it can help protect you and your family from illness and injury. For example, when you prevent a younger brother or sister from getting too close to the road, you are demonstrating the fruit of love.
