The Messenger First United Methodist Church Sharing Jesus with All Generations Washington, MO www.fumcwashington.org September 2012 Lost and Found It s been nine weeks since we arrived in Washington. We ve unpacked most of the boxes and found most of the essentials, but there still are a few pesky items missing in action. Maybe they ll be accounted for by Christmas. Some of the things we lose can be found. Some of the things we lose can be replaced. Some of the things we lose are gone forever. We naturally grieve the loss of anything important to us. Even joyful experiences include an element of grief. We often cry at weddings, and graduations, and when a child starts school. Even changes we choose like retirement, or the move to a new job can bring a sense of loss. For three weeks in September we ll be exploring how God finds us in the midst of loss. I hope you ll join us for worship September 9 September 23 for the Lost and Found series. We ll be looking at three stories from Luke 15 the story of the lost sheep, the story of the lost coin, and the story of the lost sons. This is a great time to invite a friend who has experienced a loss in his or her life. Now it s time to search for Dean s multi-tool and my 12 skillet. See you in worship! UMW Reading Program We d like to remind everyone that there are 3 more months left to read the required 5 books for the 2012 UMW Reading Certificate. A new category was added this year. You need to read one book from each of these categories: Education for Missions, Nurturing for Community, Social Action, Spiritual Growth and the new category Leadership Development. We have 2 books in the library for the new category. Those books are: Old Testament Prophets for Today and The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. Also remember to read some of the Response Magazines from the hall table. You must turn in your list of books that were read to Virginia Whyte by Thanksgiving. Seekers Class begins to study the Parables The Seekers Adult Sunday School class will begin a study of The Parables of Jesus beginning Sunday, August 26. Jesus used parables to help people understand who God is and what his Kingdom or reign is like. Jesus told his Disciples that not everyone would understand his parables. Join the Seekers in approaching the parables of Jesus with an open mind and let them challenge us in our walk of faith in Jesus Christ.

From the Evangelism Team Grace s Place: For the month of September we will collect sippy cups and cups for children with lids, kleenex, toilet paper, and diapers. These are items that are used up fast. Activity Bags for Children: Beginning September 1, there will be a small coat rack in the lobby with colored bags on it. As the children come to church, they may choose a bag to take into the sanctuary and inside will be some activities for them to do during church. There might be something to color, a small stuffed animal, some stickers to put on a page, and other activities. The children are welcome to take home colored pages but leave in the bag stuffed animals, unused colors and stickers. Then the following week, they may come and chose a different colored bag and have an activity in it. If anyone would like to contribute items for the bags, leave them with Sonja See and she will get them in the bags each week. Prepare & Share: We are starting a project called Prepare and Share. Here s your opportunity to provide a small meal, soup, stew, or something nourishing for a shut-in or just someone who needs a little encouragement. These meals will be in the church freezer for our prayer team to take to a shut in or someone to take home from church. Call Sonja See at 314.330.3470 if you want to participate in this project. Men's Breakfast Next Breakfast September 8 at 8:00am The Men's Breakfast is held the second Saturday of each month at 8:00am. The next breakfast will be September 8. The men of the church take turns preparing the meal each month and they will accept donations to cover the cost. All men of the church are welcome. From the Missions Committee Loving Hearts School Supply Thank You Thank you to everyone who donated items for the Loving Hearts school supply drive. We collected over 1,000 items that will be distributed to area students. Thank You Note The family of Grant H. Thompson appreciates all the prayers and kind words said on Grant's passing. Vanna J.
