Welcome in the name of Jesus Christ! We thank God that you have joined us for worship. If you are visiting with us, we thank God you are here and pray our worship together will be a mutual blessing. If you are looking for a church home, we hope Abiding Savior can meet your needs. Please introduce yourself to one of the Pastors. We ask both members and visitors to kindly fill out attendance cards and pass them to the center aisle. The ushers will gather them during the song following the Children s Message. Feel free to add a prayer request for the Pastor to include in the congregational prayer. We love children here at Abiding Savior. Parents are encouraged to sit in the front pews so that young children can see what is happening during worship. If you should want to make use of our cry room or nursery, please ask one of our ushers for directions. Ministers Rev. Dr. Thomas Rogers... Senior Pastor Rev. Glenn Lucas... Associate Pastor Rev. WELCOME Worship Service of Word and Song Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost OPENING CONGREGATIONAL SONG Saturday, July 30, 2016 5:00 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 2016 10:00 a.m. God Of Wonders Lord of all creation, of water, earth and sky, The heavens are Your tabernacle; Glory to the Lord on high. Refrain: God of wonders beyond our galaxy, You are holy, holy; the universe declares Your majesty. You are holy, holy; Lord of heaven and earth, Lord of heaven and earth. Early in the morning I will celebrate the light. And as I stumble in the darkness I will call Your name by night. Refrain Hallelujah! to the Lord of heaven and earth. Hallelujah! to the Lord of heaven and earth. Hallelujah! to the Lord of heaven and earth. Refrain Words & Music by Marc Byrd & Steve Hindalong Copyright 2000 Meaux Mercy/Storm Boy Music. Worshippers are invited to kneel for the Confession and Absolution. Those who desire not to kneel may sit or stand. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Pastor: If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? But with You there is forgiveness; therefore e You are feared. Pastor: Since we are gathered to hear God s Word and call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people, let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. 2

Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. Pastor: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for us and for His sake forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING ECCLESIASTES 1:2, 12-14; 14; 2:18-26 26 Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity. I the Preacher have been king over Israel in Jerusalem. And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven. It is an unhappy business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with. I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind. I hated all my toil in which I toil under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to the man who will come after me, and who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity. So I turned about and gave my heart up to despair over all the toil of my labors under the sun, because sometimes a person who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave everything to be enjoyed by someone who did not toil for it. This also is vanity and a great evil. What has a man from all the toil and striving of heart with which he toils beneath the sun? For all his days are full of sorrow, and his work is a vexation. Even in the night his heart does not rest. This also is vanity. There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God, for apart from him who can eat or who can have enjoyment? For to the one who pleases him God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner he has given the business of gathering and collecting, only to give to one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind. Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. CONGREGATIONAL SONG Lead Me To The Cross Savior I come, quiet my soul, Remember redemption s hill, Where Your blood was spilled, for my ransom. 3

Refrain: Everything I once held dear, I count it all as loss. Lead me to the cross, where Your love poured out. Bring me to my knees, Lord, I lay me down. Rid me of myself, I belong to You. Oh, lead me. Lead L me to the cross. You were as I, tempted and tried, human. The word became flesh, bore my sin in death. Now, You re risen. Refrain To Your heart. To Your heart. To Your heart. To Your heart. Lead me to the cross, where Your love poured out. Bring me to my knees, Lord, I lay me down. Rid me of myself, I belong to You. Oh, lead me. Lead me to the cross. CCLI #4785828 EPISTLE READING COLOSSIANS 3:1-11 11 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all. Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand for the Reading of the Holy Gospel. THE HOLY GOSPEL LUKE 12:13-21 21 Someone in the crowd said to [Jesus], Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me. But he said to him, Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you? And he said to them, Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. 4

And he told them a parable, saying, The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops? And he said, I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry. But God said to him, Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be? So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God. Reader: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You O Christ. Worshippers are invited to stand and share the peace of the Lord with each other. Children can come down to the chancel steps for the children s message. CHILDREN HILDREN S MESSAGE Prayer and member/guest cards will be collected during the singing of the following song: CONGREGATIONAL SONG In Christ Alone In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song; This cornerstone, this solid ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease. My comforter, my all in all, Here in the love of Christ I stand. In Christ alone, who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless Babe! This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save. Till on the cross, as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied. For ev ry sin on Him was laid; Here in the death of Christ I live. There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain; Then, bursting forth in glorious day, Up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory, Sin s curse has lost its grip on me; For I am His and He is mine, Bought with the precious blood of Christ. No guilt in life, no fear in death, This is the pow r of Christ in me; From life s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No pow r of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand; Till He returns or calls me home, Here in the pow r of Christ I ll stand! THE SERMON REV EV. TOM ROGERS APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. GATHERING OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS God doesn t need our money, but in His grace He gives us the privilege to be stewards of everything He has entrusted to our care. We can do more together than separately. As one body in Christ, our congregation has agreed to offer our first fruits to support ministries and missions that enable us to communicate Christ s love to everyone, everywhere; and our love for Him. Your sacrificial gift enables this holy work. CONGREGATIONAL MUSICAL OFFERING All to Us Precious cornerstone sure foundation You are faithful to the end. We are waiting on You, Jesus. THE LORD ORD S PRAYE RAYER Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory for ever and ever. Amen. HOLY COMMUNION REGARDING HOLY COMMUNION As Lutheran communicants, we believe that Jesus Christ is truly present in this holy supper. Be mindful of the words of St. Paul: Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. (1 Corinthians 11:28) Are you truly sorry for your sins? Do you believe your sins are forgiven because Jesus died for them? Do you believe that Jesus gives you His own body and blood in the sacrament as a seal of that forgiveness? Do you have the sincere intent to do better in living the Christian life? Then come, and receive assurance and strength from Jesus. NOTE: In the center of each communion tray are a few glasses with grape juice wine for those who are on alcohol restrictive medications or who, for personal reasons, wish to abstain from wine. Also we have gluten-free communion wafers available for those who need them. They are in the small plastic containers on the wafer trays (patens). The empty plastic containers may be placed in the bags with the used communion cups. WORDS OF INSTITUTION Pastor: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is my body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. THE PEACE Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you. People: And also with you. DISTRIBUTION SONGS Behold The Lamb Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away. Slain for us and we remember The promise made that all who come in faith Find forgiveness at the cross. So we share in this Bread of Life And we drink of His sacrifice As a sign of our bonds of peace Around the table of the King. 7

The body of our Savior, Jesus Christ Torn for you, eat and remember The wounds that heal the death that brings us life Paid the price to make us one. So we share in this Bread of Life And we drink of His sacrifice As a sign of our bonds of love Around the table of the King. The blood that cleanses every stain of sin Shed for you drink and remember He drained death s cup that all may enter in To receive the life of God. So we share in this Bread of Life And we drink of His sacrifice As a sign of our bonds of grace Around the table of the King. And so with thankfulness and faith we rise To respond and to remember Our call to follow in the steps of Christ As His body here on earth. As we share in His suffering We proclaim Christ will come again. And we ll join in the feast of heaven Around the table of the King.
