OUR MISSION Bringing new life in Jesus to Sydney s Inner West. Jesus came, died and was raised to life to give a new start, a new life - freed from sin and death, changed to love God and others and filled with eternal hope and joy - with God in Jesus. The mission of Chapel Hill is to bring this new life in Jesus to Sydney s Inner West. It begins in Rozelle as we make the most of our opportunities to reach the local community. It extends to the broader Inner West and beyond as we equip our members to reach and bring the new life in Jesus to their families, friends and colleagues across Sydney and further through missions abroad. Planting Chapel Hill in Rozelle is a timely and strategic opportunity to reach Sydney s new urbanism, a growing movement of students, professionals, young families and empty nesters returning and moving towards the city and into the Inner West. This movement is creating an increasing large, diverse and critical urban mission field in the cultural center of our city. Rozelle is a very social and attractive place to invite your friends, colleagues, family and neighbours to church. We are excited by the number opportunities to connect, evangelise and serve the local community filled with various community and interest groups. 3

O U R VISION A growing church community living and bringing new life in Jesus to Sydney s Inner West, as we love God passionately, love others deeply, and love the world boldly. We envisage Chapel Hill to be: A CHURCH THAT LOVES GOD PASSIONATELY BY BEING: A place of passionate worship and prayer through rich biblical teaching that renews the mind, touches the heart and changes lives. A community with a devotion and worship of Jesus in all areas of life. A community committed to knowing God and upholding the essential gospel truths of the Christian faith revealed in the Bible. A CHURCH THAT LOVES OTHERS DEEPLY BY BEING: A community that embraces people from all cultures, ages and abilities. A community that is committed to meeting together, deeply caring and growing each other s faith and obedience to God. A community that deeply desires to serve and build one another up with all of God s spiritual gifts given to each individual. A CHURCH THAT LOVES THE WORLD BOLDLY BY BEING: A community that boldly and prayerfully seeks to share the gospel, as we lovingly serve people, in Sydney s Inner West and beyond. A community that works in unity with other churches and community groups to contribute to the good of the Rozelle and the wider Inner West community. A church that invests, trains and supports leaders to be sent out to minister in many different ways across Sydney and around the world. 5

O U R VALUES Chapel Hill is committed to the following core values to direct and shape our church community in fulfilling our vision of living and giving new life in Jesus to Sydney s Inner West. MAGNIFICATION MEMBERSHIP MATURITY MINISTRY MISSION To glorify God with passionate hearts in corporate and individual worship. To be members of Christ s body by connecting, sharing and loving in community. To change and grow in Christ-like maturity as we obey the Word of God in an authentic community. To identify, equip and sacrificially minister others with our gifts for the building up of the church. To boldly and prayerfully seek to share the gospel as we lovingly serve a lost world. 7

O U R PASTOR Michael Nhieu is the pastor of Chapel Hill. Michael grew up in the Inner West of Sydney in a non-christian home. He met Jesus Christ and came to understand his life, death and resurrection when he was studying a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of New South Wales. This ignited a life-changing passion to share and bring the new life in Jesus to others. After university, Michael worked in management consulting for a few years before moving into church work. Michael has been a Youth Pastor at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church as well as a Director and Board Member of the RICE Movement. In 2012, Michael graduated with a Bachelor of Theology from Moore Theological College. Michael is currently completing a Master of Arts in Theology at Christ College and will be ordained by the Presbyterian Church of New South Wales. To be equipped for urban church planting Michael is member of both the Redeemer City to City and Geneva Push church planting networks. Michael is married to Amy, who grew up in a Christian family who lived and served overseas in the Ukraine with the European Christian Mission. Amy made a conscious decision to follow Jesus at age eight. In 2012 Amy graduated with a Diploma of Theology and Ministry from Sydney Missionary Bible College. Both Michael and Amy love exploring new cafés in Sydney and are excited about joining God in planting Chapel Hill to see people transformed to be passionately engaged followers of Jesus. 9

O U R SUNDAY SERVICE Chapel Hill is located at 665A Darling St, Rozelle, right at the heart of the Rozelle community, in our own church building. It is adjacent to the Rozelle Markets and close to cafes, art galleries, boutique shops and public transport. Chapel Hill's Sunday service will be open, inviting, relaxed and contemporary for people to feel welcomed to meet and worship Jesus. This is what you can expect: A MORNING SERVICE at 10:30am suitable for all ages, when the markets and cafes are open and the local community are out and about. A WELCOMING CULTURE of meeting everyone from all backgrounds and walks of life. AN ACCESSIBLE ATMOSPHERE for believers, seekers and non-believers, alike. GOSPEL PREACHING that is faithful, engaging, applicable and brings people to meet and worship Jesus. CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER that is biblical, thoughtful and specific. RESPONSE time and opportunities for people to respond to the preaching of God s Word. WHOLE-HEARTED congregational singing to express the truths of God. CHILDREN S MINISTRY that is making disciples not just child minding. COMMUNITY that extends beyond the Sunday service. CONSIDERATE COMMUNICATION that is purposeful and accessible. 11

OUR COMMUNITY GROUPS Community groups are important to the mission of Chapel Hill, because of our biblical conviction that community is the place for discipling each other to live out our new life in Jesus in all of our day to day lives. Our community groups are the weekly gathering of people from Chapel Hill who together live out the core values in our new life in Jesus. MAGNIFICATION MEMBERSHIP MATURITY MINISTRY MISSION Our community groups will encourage others towards constant worship and prayer. This may involve sharing our lives and giving praises to God, gathering to sing worship songs and praying together and ensuring that we worship together on Sunday. Our community groups are hospitable places where we can enjoy one another and easily invite new people to experience our community with food, fun and an enjoyable space to build relationships. Our community groups will foster change and growth through studying the Bible. We hope to foster a culture of repentance and obedience as a response to the gospel and the work of the Holy Spirit. Community Groups will be the first line of call for pastoral care through the mutual care and counseling from members. Connect Group leaders will be trained in pastoral care and counseling fundamentals. Our community groups are also the place to serve one another s needs and develop relationships with the wider community to serve the local community. Our community groups are to evangelise friends and neighbours through witnessing of our new life in Jesus together. 13

WAYS TO SERVE Chapel Hill is committed to being a community focused church. We want to be a place where people are encouraged to become actively involved in serving each other and the wider community. There will be countless opportunities for everyone to be involved to serve, but here is a taste of some of the ministry teams that you can serve in. MUSIC WELCOMING KIDS MINISTRY SCRIPTURE IN SCHOOLS MISSION AND MERCY COMMUNICATION AND OPERATIONS The music team will lead the congregation to engage our hearts and minds with God. Our music ministry will develop opportunities for people of all different levels of ability and experience. We will use our different instruments to share and grow music at Chapel Hill. All Chapel Hill members will have a strong culture of welcoming and bringing newcomers to lunch and other Sunday afternoon activities. The welcoming team will help visitors and newcomers connect with the church relationally and connect them into community groups, church programs and events. They will also be responsible for coordinating newcomers lunches and socials. Chapel Hill is committed to running a Kids Church program where children are taught from the Bible using a curriculum. At Chapel Hill, kids will be able to have fun in interactive lessons with song and dance, creative craft and outdoor activities each Sunday during school term. A team of volunteers will prepare and teach students religious education each week from a curriculum at Rozelle Public School and other schools in the area. The Mission and Mercy team will champion evangelistic initiatives, finds ways to engage and serve the local community and foster mercy ministry opportunities. These will involve partnering with local council, welfare organisations and Jericho Road Presbyterian Social Services. On Sundays Chapel Hill will be underpinned by a creative, tech-savvy and motivated team. This team will also help us interact with the community as a church and make Jesus known across Sydney. 15

OUR PARTNERS AND GOVERNANCE Chapel Hill is in partnership with Campbell St (Balmain), Cornerstone, and Drummoyne Presbyterian churches. We are also supported by the Ministry and Mission Committee of the Presbyterian Church of New South Wales. From 2014 to 2016 Chapel Hill will be governed by an Interim Session (Eldership Board), which is made up of the senior ministers and two elders of our 3 partner churches. During this period there is also an Interim Committee of Management, which oversees Chapel Hill s finances, legal, and compliance matters. The Moderator and chairperson for both the Interim Session and Committee of Management is Luke Tattersall, the senior minister of Campbell St Presbyterian Church. From 2017 onwards it is planned for Chapel Hill to install its own local elders to make up the Session and appoint local Committee of Management members, which will be moderated by Michael Nhieu. Michael Nhieu is member of the Interim Session and Interim Committee of Management and will lead the Leadership Team to lead and direct the various ministries of Chapel Hill. The chart below illustrates Chapel Hill s governance structure: SESSION COMMITTEE OF MANAGEMENT MICHAEL NHIEU LEADERSHIP TEAM 17

OUR STATEMENT OF FAITH Our statement of faith clarifies the foundational beliefs that we believe about the Christian faith as revealed in the Bible. These beliefs are foundational for our preaching, teaching, praying and counselling. BIBLE The Bible is made up of the Old Testament and New Testament Scriptures that are the divinely inspired written Word of God. The Bible is the infallible self-revelation of God, containing all things necessary for knowing God and attaining salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. It has supreme authority in all matters of Christian faith, conduct and experience. GOD There is one true and living God, who exists in everlasting love of three persons the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The triune God is sovereign over a ll things: creation, revelation, redemption, judgement and the establishing of His kingdom. God is abundantly gracious and merciful towards His people, while also wonderfully pure and perfectly just. As the sovereign loving Creator and Redeemer, He is worthy of all glory, worship and praise. CREATION God created all of creation to be good and he rules and sustains all of it in accordance to his perfect will. Human beings are created in God s image; he made us male and female, of equal dignity but with differing roles, so that we might glorify Him through enjoying relationship with Him and by looking after all of His creation. HUMANITY God created humans in His own image, as the crown of creation. Tempted by Satan, the first human beings fell into rebellion against God to live a life apart from God and turned their worship of the Creator to the creation. The consequence of the fall was brokenness in our relationship with God and each other. Sin, evil and death entered the world and enslaved humanity and corrupted God s good creation. As the result of the fall, humanity is universally sinful by nature and guilty before God. We stand under God s just judgement and are unable to save ourselves. JESUS Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God who took on human flesh by being supernaturally conceived by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary. Jesus Christ is both fully God and fully man, who lived a sinless life, died a substitutionary death for sinners on a Roman cross. He was bodily raised on the third day and ascended as the Lord of all things. By Jesus death, resurrection and ascension, God redeemed and reconciled sinners to himself. He began the work of renewing creation and has enthroned Jesus Christ to rule over all things. God will return to judge the living and the dead and bring all creation under his perfect rule.

GOSPEL The gospel is the good news of salvation. The gospel is a free gift of God entirely by God s grace to those who repent, believe and put their faith in Jesus substitutionary death and resurrection. This is the only thing that can save us from death and God s judgement. Those who believe in the gospel will be forgiven of their sins, justified before God, set free from the power of evil, transferred into God s Kingdom and filled with the Holy Spirit. The gospel gives us relationship with God in His Church. We are adopted as his children with the promise and hope of eternal life all to the glory of God. THE HOLY SPIRIT The Holy Spirit makes it possible for people to respond to God by convicting people of their sin and enabling faith in Jesus Christ. This comes about through the proclamation of the gospel. The Holy Spirit dwells in believers and unites them to Christ to transforms them to be like Christ. He enables us to serve with spiritual gifts, empowers us to witness to the ends of the earth and guarantees eternal life and bodily resurrection. CHURCH Jesus Christ is the head of the Church, which is His body, made up of genuine followers of Jesus Christ. The local church is a manifestation of His body, which locally gathers together to worship and glorify God and serve Him. This service involves faithfully making disciples of Jesus Christ who glorify God in all of life, are committed members of the church community, participate in the signs of grace (namely baptism and Lord s Supper), mature in their faith and obedience to the Word of God. God s Church involves ministering to one another as the Holy Spirit enables and living for God s mission to witness and call on all people everywhere to trust in Jesus for salvation. Our service to God in bring new life in Jesus to others is marked by a passionate love for God, deep love for others and bold love for the world. 19
