Computer Corner By Guruka Singh Is your computer in good shape? What I mean by that is, has the unit been tortured and abused all summer long with heaps of games, screensavers and file sharing programs that are popular with teens? Does it take forever to boot up? Is it a little sluggish once it does finally get to your opening screen? If so, having it cleaned up can rejuvenate virtually any computer that has excessive processes running on it (and save you money!). The easiest way to tell if things have gotten out of control is to open the Task Manager (press Ctrl-Alt-Del in Windows 2000, XP, and Vista) and look at the bottom left corner of the window that comes up. The Processes section will have a number that represents the number of processes you currently have running. If that number is in over 60, your system will likely perform much better if you eliminate the unnecessary processes that are being forced on Windows every time you start the machine. Make sure your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs are up to date and then run a deep virus and spyware scan (which means all files which can take several hours each). Once you have done the initial cleanup, take a look at the specific entries on the Processes tab of the Task Manager. Any of the items that do not have SYSTEM under the User Name heading were likely added by a user. Use Google (search for the actual process name ex:acrord32.exe) to learn more about each process that is running so you can figure out if it can be removed from your computer startup or perhaps uninstalled. (The End Process button in this window will only temporarily remove the process, which will restart again the next time you boot up.) You can see what is loading when your computer starts up and disable things (yes, you can put them back easily) by checking and unchecking the corresponding boxes in the Windows System Configuration Utility. Click on the Start button, then Run and type in MSCONFIG to run it. (See diagram below.) I like to see desktop computers with between 30-38 processes and laptops with between 40-45 processes. These excess processes tend to sneak into your computer from adware, spyware, software programs that like to heap on trialware, a n d s i l e n t d r i v e - b y downloads from malicious Web sites that typically target users that like free stuff. Figuring out what each process is and how to remove them is a little more complicated, but I will give you some tips for getting started (or seek professional help if you aren t up for the task). Open your Control Panel and choose Add or Remove Programs and remove old programs that you no longer need, anything that looks like a third party screen saver, a toolbar that you did not install and especially file sharing programs like Kazaa that could get you or your child into legal trouble. You may also want to consider adding extra RAM (Memory), which is the best bang for the buck when upgrading your computer. I recommend one Gigabyte (1024 k) for Windows XP and at least twice that much for Windows Vista. 101 Clips This is the simplest of all multi-clipboard programs. Just have it running minimized and it captures everything you (Continued on page 6) 3

Website: www.espanolaashram.com Going Green Food and Fuel: Biofuels Could Benefit World s Undernourished By Worldwatch Institute, August 17, 2007 The increase in world agriculture prices caused by the global boom in biofuels could benefit many of the world s rural poor one of many conclusions of a landmark new 450-page book, Biofuels for Transport: Global Potential and Implications for Energy and Agriculture, authored by Worldwatch and published by Earthscan. Decades of declining agricultural prices have been reversed thanks to the growing use of biofuels, says Christopher Flavin, president of the Institute. Farmers in some of the poorest nations have been decimated by U.S. and European subsidies to crops such as corn, cotton, and sugar. Today s higher prices may allow them to sell their crops at a decent price, but major agriculture reforms and infrastructure development will be needed to ensure that the increased benefits go to the world s 800 million undernourished people, most of whom live in rural areas. Biofuels for Transport, undertaken with support from the German Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Consumer Protection, assesses the range of sustainability issues the biofuels industry will present in the years ahead, ranging from implications for the global climate and water resources to biological diversity and the world s poor. The book finds that rising food prices are a hardship for some urban poor, who will need increased assistance from the World Food Programme and other relief efforts. However, it notes that the central cause of food scarcity is poverty, and seeking food security by driving agricultural prices ever lower will hurt more people than it helps. Growth in biofuels production may have unexpected economic benefits, according to the experts who contributed to the report. Of the 47 poorest countries, 38 are net importers of oil and 25 import all of their oil; for these nations, the tripling in oil prices has been an economic disaster. But nations that develop domestic biofuels industries will be able to purchase fuel from their own farmers rather than spending scarce foreign exchange on imported oil. World biofuels production rose 28 percent to 44 billion liters in 2006, according to the figures compiled since research on Biofuels for Transport was completed; fuel ethanol was up 22 percent and biodiesel rose 80 percent. Although biofuels comprise less than 1 percent of the global liquid fuel supply, the surge in production of biofuels in 2006 met 17 percent of the increase in supply of all liquid fuels worldwide last year. (Continued on page 5) 4

(Continued from page 4) This rapid growth is having unintended impacts. Large-scale biofuels production can threaten biodiversity, as seen recently with palm oil plantations in Indonesia that are encroaching on forests and edging out the endangered orangutan population, worrying European consumers who have begun importing palm oil from Southeast Asia. In Brazil, the Cerrado, a vast landscape of biologically rich forests, brush, and pasture just south of the Amazon, is coming under pressure as sugar cane cultivation expands. It is critical to the stability of the climate that we prevent biofuels from expanding at the expense of rainforests and other valuable ecosystems that store carbon and provide other ecological services, says Suzanne Hunt, who directed the team of 15 researchers from four countries. Energy crops should instead be established on the millions of hectares of degraded land that can be found around the world. Current biofuels production methods place a heavy burden on land and water resources, due in part to the fossil fuel- and chemicalintensive corn that is used to produce over half the world s ethanol, says Hunt. Farming practices need to be reexamined if agriculture is to provide energy as well as food for a rapidly growing global population that is hungry for both. The book concludes that the long-term potential of biofuels is in the use of non-food feedstock, including agricultural and forestry wastes, as well as fast-growing, cellulose-rich energy crops such as perennial grasses and trees. Following the model of Brazil s sugar cane-based biofuels industry, cellulosic ethanol could dramatically reduce the carbon dioxide and nitrogen pollution that results from today s biofuel crops. The question is not whether biofuels will play a major part in the global transportation fuel market, but when and at what price, says Flavin. The first priority should be to ensure that the industry develops sustainably so that the problems of an oil-based economy are not replaced by another socially and ecologically bankrupt industry. The book recommends policies that protect natural resources and support a speedy transition to improved biofuels technologies. Freer trade in biofuels should be coupled with social and environmental certification and a credible system to certify compliance. Biofuels alone will not solve the world s transportationrelated energy problems, the authors conclude. Development of these fuels must occur within the context of a transition to a more efficient, less polluting and more diversified global transport sector. They must be part of a portfolio of options that includes dramatic improvements in vehicle fuel economy, investment in public transportation, and better urban planning. When you want to paste one back, all you have to do is restore the 101 Clips window and click on the clip you want. If you prefer to work entirely from the keyboard, you can choose a function key to restore and then paste any clip by typing the letter shown next to it. When you move the mouse over the clips, you can see them in the viewer. If the clip is text, you see several lines and if it is a graphic, you see a thumbnail. Get it at: www.101clips.com/freeclip.htm Siphs How do you share links that you enjoy with your friends? Many of us more technical folks use a service like http://del.icio.us/ to bookmark and share links, but those who aren t as inclined towards technology may still use standard e-mail to send useful and entertaining links back and forth to one another. Regular e-mail methods work, but they can be enhanced thanks to an inventive Web service called Siphs. It still encourages you to use e-mail to share these links with others, however, it redefines the way in which this is done. A dialog box will appear indicating how many replacements Word has made. This tells you how many times the specific word occurs in the document. By using the ^& characters, Word does not actually make any replacements. FontPicker - Font Comparison www.snapfiles.com/get/fontpicker.html When I'm working on a Word document, making a PowerPoint presentation, or adding titles to a video, I like having a quick way to compare fonts. I've recommended other font browsers, like FontPage, in the past, but all the free ones seem to fall short in side-by-side font comparison options. FontPicker shines in this regard, making it easy to compare up to three different fonts at the same time. Compare font sizes, compare bold and italic styling, and compare alignment for exactly the right look. FontPicker supports changing the sample text so you can see the text you plan to use in three fonts at the same time for more accurate comparison. Full character maps are available for each font to make a detailed comparison of all characters. If finding the perfect look for your text is important, FontPicker helps simplify that decision process. By installing a bookmarklet that works with Firefox and Internet Explorer, you gain instant access to the functionality that Siphs has to offer. The next time you visit a Web site that you d like to share, all you have to do is click on the Siphs button in your browser, add individual recipients or groups, specify the description, and then send it off to whomever you specify. They ll receive the message, and once they opt-in, they ll be a part of this link exchange activity. Another helpful feature of the service is that it stores the links that have been sent and received so that you won t have to rely on your Inbox to keep track of everything. Check it out at www.siphs.com Word Usage Count in Microsoft Word Using the Word Count feature of Microsoft Word, you can easily find out exactly how many words are in your document. What if you want to find out how many times a specific word is used in a document? The Word Count feature does not have this functionality. One way you can count the number of occurrences of a single word is to start at the beginning of the document and work your way to the end, manually keeping track of each occurrence. An easier method is to use the Find and Replace option as described below. On the Home tab, in the Editing group, click Replace. Click the Replace tab. Type the word you want to count in the Find what field. In the Replace with field type: ^&. Click Replace All. 6 Do let me know if this column is useful to you. Yogi Bhajan s 74th Birthday Party Lecture August 30, 2003 (Transcribed by Nam Kaur and read at the 2007 SSS Birthday Celebration) You have taken root. This is not available in the spirituality of the world. From Oslo to Spain, you are everywhere. It s amazing. And there are not just four, five or six of you. You have families of many. People are asking me, Where these people have come from? I said, I don t know. They are here. The giant enlargement of the birthday invitation at the entrance to the SSS Gallery. What are you teaching them? I said, nothing. But you must be telling them something. I said, I am telling them, There is one God. He is not in any duality. He doesn t belong to Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, or anybody. That one God belongs to you, and you alone. Think about that and see what answer comes to you. Some never believe. Some believe. Those who believe are now very prosperous and very together. They are carrying so many people with them. I never thought you will have corporations. Whatever they do, it comes out to the best. It is shocking what clarity of mind can do for a man. Varnjeet K, Sat Sangat S. and Guru Lal enjoyed the SSS gallery. You win a lot of things, but those things come from your previous karma. Here, what you win is your dharma positive, graceful, and with compassion and kindness. When you reach out to a person your love vibrates. Maybe it is difficult and maybe it is not difficult. But all I know is compassion has no limit. And compassion is the approach to those who do not have the capacity to be kind. It is far more than anyone thinks. When I came here, I was just like a football and they wanted to kick me out. And then I just kept my silence. To some people I did say, Hey, do you remember there is something called God? One said, Yeah, we have a God, I have my God. Pirtpal Singh was the master curator for the SSS Birthday Gallery. I said, What are you so upset about? There is one (Continued on page 8) 7

(Continued from page 7) God, there are not many. So don t feel proud that there are many gods. There is one God, one human being, and one truth. Finish your chapter on that one and you ll be the luckiest person. Today we are most outspoken and free: call it anything. It s as open as the open sky can be. Nobody gets upset. Your God, my God, their God, my God! there is one God! And we ll not fight about it. So please, you have honored me, and because of your honor, I am breathing. According to all these signs, which are known in India, my age limit was 73. And I was pretty much ready. I made my bed with white sheets, and very beautiful pillows. So I sent a memo to all of my offices and heads of the corporations to stick around and not go on any long trips. So, the time has come. The one who made my horoscope was my teacher s astrologer, too. And I couldn t even believe it. Look at what has happened to me. I am healthier than I was 20 years ago. But you must have one piece of advice from me. And I will be very free and honest in giving it to you. Overworking is not a pleasure. I overworked. I admit it. Morning, evening, evening, morning; so much so, that every lady working on the airplanes knew my name by heart. Oh, he s from Albuquerque. He s that Yogi. He has come in. But later on it caught up with me. So I ll say: Work, exercise, meditate and relax. God will not let you go and you will be healthy. Don t do too much. Like my girl started taking citrus and lemon and just living on that. That is fanaticism. That is just pulling the doctor s leg. That s not going to work. But I think that now we have to cook for her and she ll be alright. Thank God we know this formula for arthritis and can take care of you. Otherwise you know, it is very painful. And we create in ourself this macho attitude, and say, I lived only on milk for a whole month. In which book it is written that you should go on a mono diet? You have a digestive system and it needs a lot of things. Instead of providing all the regular foods in small amounts, you just jump to eating only one thing and continue. That s not fair. Eat little, eat smart and eat well. One of the difficulties is that I m two days late from my total healing. Two days. We missed the bus by two days. I hope I ll be in a position to get ready, and visit you all, and we ll have fun. God bless you. Down Memory Lane Excerpts from Beads of Truth #16, Winter 1986 (Guru Ram Das Birthday as celebrated in 1985 - Los Angeles & Espanola) Great, Great is Guru Ram Das! October 30, 1985, Guru Ram Das birthday was celebrated with great reverence and joy throughout the world, and certainly with heartfelt prayers. For it has been seen that whatever you pray for on his birthday can be granted! Starting with a special meditation of two and one-half hours of continuous chanting of the miracle-producing shabad Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru Jin Siria Tinai Savaria the day had a magic quality of love permeating the atmosphere. Guru Ram Das Ashram in Los Angeles glowed with the inner light of souls filled with bliss while overhead strands of lights twinkled. Devotees brought offerings of food which had been reverently and prayerfully prepared, to place at the feet of the Guru. After a magnificent Gurdwara, the pot-luck langar was shared by all. The Siri Singh Sahib addressed the Sangat both in the morning and in the evening. During the morning sadhana, we were privileged to have the Siri Singh Sahib join with the jethas, playing a most fascinating precussion instrument. He told us that everyone should be playing an instrument! This is the kind of kirtan where everyone should participate. There is no way to describe how high the vibrations were, and what a magnificent birthday celebration it was. In New Mexico, also, the birthday celebration of Guru Ram Das was a celestial experience. Guru Jeet Kaur prepared her home, Shanti Nivas (an old A-frame house under the large cottonwood tree), for many months making hand embroidered ramalas and setting the vibration for the Espanola sangat to bring the joy of the occasion that Guru Ram Das has blessed them with. The walkway to Shanti Nivas was lighted with luminarios. Inside, the light of small white candles was caught by the many pink and gold sequins decorating the Gurdwara with appropriate honor. All felt touched by the beautiful miracle of Guru Ram Das. 8

Advertisement Marine Phytoplankton, known for years by scientists as a nutritional super food, has been made available to man for the first time in history. Marine phytoplankton are single-celled plantlike organism that grow in the ocean. According to NASA, Marine Phytoplankton are responsible for up to 90 percent of the planet s oxygen, which is essential to sustaining life both on land and sea. Some medical sources have described Marine Phytoplankton as the most perfect food source as it contains more that 65 nutritional properties. These tiny organisms contain 400 times more energy than any known plant on earth.
