November 9th is the holyday of St. Nektarios the Wonder-Worker, a special intercessor for those with cancer and other terminal illnesses. To honor his day, we will celebrate a Moleben (prayer service) at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, November 8th, with prayers for the living/sick. Following this service, we will have an enrichment lesson about God s healing and St. Nektarios, offered by our neighbor Fr. Michael Gavrilos of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in New Castle. Come, pray, learn! We offer special prayers for safety in travel for Dr. Henry Van Zanten as he departs for the OCMC short-term Healthcare Mission to provide health care and health education at the Fr. Andres Giron Clinic in Aguacate, a predominately Mayan region of northern Guatemala. The trip goes from November 10 to 19. Please include Dr. Henry and the team in your daily prayers during this time. May God assign a guardian angel to this trip, and bless Henry and all the participants for many years! 2018 Special Fund calendar tickets are coming soon! New prize amounts! A Pan-Orthodox Nativity Fast Retreat, sponsored by our local Clergy Brotherhood, will be held on Saturday, November 18th at Holy Cross Orthodox Church, 950 Maple Drive, Hermitage. The presenter is Fr. Joseph Wargo, and the topic is Ministry to the Sick, Suffering, and Dying. Registration begins at 9:00 AM, and a donation of $10 is requested. Lunch is included. Please see the enclosed brochure for more information. 2017 Chinese Auction Sunday, November 19 Doors open at 1:00 PM Drawing starts promptly at 3:00 PM Admission is $5.00 Tickets are $3.00 per sheet or 4 for $10.00. As usual, we are asking our parishioners to donate prizes for the auction. We are requesting that prizes be worth at least $10.00. Your donations can be left on the long tables in the fellowship hall, to the left of the stage area. There is a notebook in the hall; please sign your name and the item you bring in. Monetary donations are also accepted.

The Nativity Fast ( Advent ) begins on November 15th During this time, we prepare for the celebration of the Nativity of Christ (December 25) and the festive season (the 12 Days of Christmas ) that ends with the Baptism of Christ (January 6). Special services will be held on Wednesdays to help us prayerfully prepare. Additional times are scheduled for Confession, which we are to approach during this time. Fasting goes hand-in-hand with our spiritual preparation. The traditional, fuller fast calls for abstention from meat and dairy from November 15 until December 25. At a minimum, we are to abstain from meat on Wednesdays and Fridays, and observe the fast on Christmas Eve, December 24. (Dispensation is given for Thanksgiving and the Friday following, as listed in the ACRY Annual.) Consider this: in America today, most people pre-celebrate Christmas, so that Christmas ends on December 25th. The Church wants us to take time and prepare before Christmas, and then celebrate and feast. We should, of course, be balanced in how we approach this, especially when invited by friends, neighbors and coworkers to holiday gatherings. In our personal and family observance of this pre-christmas Fast, though, adding an extra day or two (or more!) of fasting and abstention per week can help us focus more intently on preparation, and lessen the temptation to end Christmas on December 25th. Remember: don t ask what is the least I have to do? but what is the most that I can do for Christ? 2018 Church Wall Calendars have again been provided to our parish through the generosity of TOMON FUNERAL SERVICES. We thank our parish funeral directors Joe Tomon and Jennifer for this annual gift, and ask God to bless them for many, blessed years! Every home should have a calendar! Please take a calendar home and let it assist you in sanctifying the whole course of the year. Follow the daily commemorations, as the Church remembers the events of our salvation the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Our Lord and the lives of the saints. Use the Bible readings as daily spiritual nourishment.

STEWARDSHIP by Dan Hromyak "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all our soul and with all your mind." - Matthew 22:27 Do you put other "gods" before God? Is your love of money, power, status or some personal possession greater than your love for God? Do you really recognize that everything you have and everything you are is a gift from God? The good news - it's not too late to put God first in your life in all things. "Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted." - Matthew 23:12 Jesus gave His life to serve, not to be served. Putting other's needs before our own needs is a sign of becoming a mature disciple, of following Jesus' example. Humility is really a sign of a strength. By putting other's needs first we declare to the world that we are putting our complete trust in God. When we align our thoughts and actions with God's plan for us, the result is Joy and Peace.
