St. Kevin Roman Catholic Church St. Kevin Parish Mission Statement We are a Catholic Christian community striving to live as disciples of Jesus Christ. Nourished by the Eucharist and enlightened by the Word of God, our Pastor, Parish Staff and Parishioners welcome all. With faith in His Gospel, we are called to love as Jesus loves and, therefore, serve our community through the sharing of time, talents and treasure to support programs of evangelization and social justice. Our commitment encompasses serving the youth through education, sports and formation. We seek to develop services for the elderly and homebound. Finally we wish to challenge and sustain all parishioners through spiritual and education activities. Most Reverend Raymond F. Chappetto, Pastor, D.D., V.G, V.E. Reverend Robert H.C. November 19, 2017 St. Kevin R.C. Church Page 2 Your Attention Please! Please note that we will not be having our monthly collection of food for the St. Gerard Majella Food Pantry. The Thanksgiving Food Basket collection on November 21st will take its place. Thanksgiving is approaching and we are beginning to plan for our Annual Thanksgiving Food Collection scheduled for Tuesday evening, November 21st. We would like to continue our long tradition of collecting boxes containing a complete dinner for a family. The collection of baskets on Tuesday night, November 21st, is entirely different from the event that will take place on Friday, Nov. 17th, in the Finnerty Parish Center. If you are unable to contribute a box containing a complete meal, why not join with a friend or two and put one together? If you would prefer to make a free-will donation at the Thanksgiving Day Mass, we will use the money to help needy families at Christmas. If you have any questions, please contact the rectory (718-357-8888). Please use the tear-off at the bottom and return it to the rectory or drop it in the collection basket so that we can estimate the number of meals that will be collected and distributed on Tuesday evening, November 21st. Thank You! ********************************************************** Name: Phone #: The Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Prayer Service will take place on Monday, November 20th, at St. Kevin Church, beginning at 7:30 P.M. We hope that many of our parishioners and friends will join us as we thank God for His many blessings that He has bestowed on our parish and families. Page 3 www.stkevinflushing.org November 19, 2017 Q. With the announcement that we need a new roof on the Church will that extend the time for the work to be completed? Will that delay the painting of the interior of the Church? A. The new roof will most likely require more time for the work to be completed. Depending on the weather this winter, we could see the work going well into the Spring, perhaps the early summer. Please pray for a mild winter. Regarding the painting of the Church, we were scheduled to start on January 2, 2018. However, it looks like that date will now be at the beginning of February since we must wait until we are sure that the Church is water-tight before we begin to paint. With a promise to keep you informed, we again beg your patience and support. Volunteers Neeed Habitat for Humanity transforms vacant and blighted houses into newly renovated homes for lowincome working families in Queens. Please come to the meeting and find out what it is all about. To RSVP or for any questions please contact Deacon Bill at wjmolloy@gmail.com or phone/text 201-563-6481. November 19, 2017 St. Kevin R.C. Church Page 6 We are reminded (in the Order of Christian burial) that in the waters of Baptism we have died with Christ and we rise with Him in new life. Dear Parishioners of St. Kevin Parish, We have received your check totaling $1,424.00 for 2017 World Mission Sunday. Thank you for your generosity to the Missions and for making our mission, your mission. Rev. Msgr. Joseph P. Nagle Diocesan Director The Pontifical Mission Societies Vocation Thought Well done, good and faithful servant How are you called to use your talents? To help in your discernment, you are invited to call the rectory (718-357-8888) and speak with one of the parish priests or you can call the Vocation Office at 718-827-2454. The Center is easily accessible. Our guest speaker will be from the NYC Dept. of consumer Affairs. Refreshments will be available. All are welcome. Please join us! Blessing and Dismissal At the beginning of Mass, the priest made the sign of the cross with us. At the conclusion of Mass, he makes the sign of the cross over us, a sign of blessing. We are then dismissed, not just let out, but sent forth with a mission to love and serve the Lord. Just as Jesus blessed his disciples as he ascended to heaven, so this leave-taking is joined to a blessing, a prayer for God s continuing protection. As we leave the church, we bear the invisible sign of the Master whom we follow. In the words of an ancient letter to Diognetus, Christians are indistinguishable from other [people] either by nationality, language, or customs. They do not inhabit separate cities of their own, or speak a strange dialect, or follow an outlandish way of life.. And yet, there is something extraordinary about their lives (Liturgy of the Hours, Vol. II, p. 840). We are ordinary people sent forth to live extraordinary lives, lives like Christ s own life, pouring ourselves out for others in prayer, service, and love. Weekly Collection November 12, 2017...$8,168.00 50/50 Raffle - Please place your November 50/50 envelope (that you received in your monthly envelope package), with your $5 donation, in the collection basket today. Extra envelopes are located at the doors of the church (please write the month on the envelope). Thank you for your support of St. Kevin Church! Line Dancing at St. Kevin There will be line dancing on the following Friday evenings in the Finnerty Parish Center: Beginning at 7:00 P.M. on November 17 and December 12, 22 and 29. Beginning at 8:00 P.M. on December 1st. For information, call Emilie at 347-400-4358. Stewardship Thought..In today s Gospel, Jesus delivers the parable of the talents; using the example of money rather than abilities or skills. It s a story about investments, risks and returns. Stewards understand that God has given them an abundance of spiritual gifts. They know God doesn t want them to simply receive these blessings and bury them in fear, but to multiply them; to use these gifts to serve Him and others; to spread Christ s Good News; to go and make disciples of others. Good stewards invest what God has given them in the service of others and are prepared to render an account when the Lord returns. Reflect this week on how you are returning your own God-given gifts back to God with increase. 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal Update Thank you to the parishioners who have already sent in their pledges for the 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal!
