Travel books will be a great asset to any section we study, This one is no exception. Great pictures and insight in the current places of an ancient land. Pictures for all levels, reading for intermediate levels. The Jewish Cuisine I Love by Jules J. Bond (ISBN 0-0148-0692) Easy to use book with one recipe per page and great color photos for each. Some classic Jewish recipes seem to be missing, though there is a section on Passover. The Jews for Jesus Family Cookbook, by Melissa Moskowitz (ISBN 1-881-0222-14-5) Write to Jews for Jesus for this one. The recipes in this unit are all from this cookbook! We have used ours and the food is great. (60 Haight Street, San Francisco, California 94102) Cost is about $15.00) Ethnic Cuisine / How to Create the Authentic Flavors of 30 International Cuisines by Elisabeth Rozin. (Penguin Books, ISBN 0-14--46931-1) This book would be handy to have all year! There are some unusual spices and ingredients, but it is fascinating! Italy: Life World Library by Herber Kubly (Time-Life Books,1961) This is a marvelous picture book to show you Italy from a Life magazine photographers view. Wonderful! Children's adventure/mystery stories are often set in unusual locations around the world. Try these for fun: Mandie Mysteries (available at Christian bookstores and "good" libraries). (Elementary Level) Choose Your Own Adventure Series (Elementary Level) Ladd Family Adventure Series (Elementary Level) Frank Peretti Children's Adventures (available in Christian bookstores) Hardy Boys Mysteries (Elementary Level) The Diary of a Young Girl, by Anne Frank. This book helps students understand a Jewish family and their need for a Jewish homeland. (Intermediate Level) The Hiding Place, by Corrie Ten Boom; Though this book takes place in Holland, this also shows why so many fled Europe during the Holocaust, and why the state of Israel was necessary. (Intermediate Level) The Zion Chronicles by Bodie Thoene, Bethany House This excellent series about the founding of the modern nation of Israel in 1948 is a wonderful, historically accurate series for high schoolers and accelerated junior high students. (Upper Intermediate-Advanced Level) Exodus by Leon Uris This is an excellent novel about the birth of modern Israel. It is too difficult for younger students, but should be just right for high schoolers. It's also good for parents, and the story can be retold to the younger ones. Mediterranean Region Resources Cont d looking for "Ode to Byzantium," but some of his other works contain a Byzantine theme. (Advanced Level) Black Amber, by Phyllis A. Whitney. This Gothic mystery set in Istanbul in the early 1960s is great for high school students (especially girls!) - - it includes a great deal of history of the city, as well as descriptions of scenery, etc., along with a suspense-filled mystery story with just enough romance of the old-fashioned clean variety, and some nasty villains whose downfall you can cheer. Highly recommended as a moral (though not Christian) tale. (Advanced Level) Mrs. Pollifax and the Whirling Dervish, by Dorothy Gilman This amusing mystery novel is about an elderly lady who is a spy working for the CIA. It is set in Morocco and gives a great deal of background on the history, culture and present government of Morocco. High schoolers should enjoy it. (Parents should be aware that the character, Mrs. Pollifax, is unduly fascinated with Moroccan religion, which is presented in a very favorable light; this is an opportunity to discuss the importance of bringing the Gospel to a lost world.) (Advanced Level) The Fall Feasts of Israel by Zhava Glaser, The Jewish Family Cookbook by Melissa Moskowitz, Y'shua by Moishe Rosen, and many other publications on the Jewish roots of Christianity are available from Jews for Jesus, 60 Haight Street, San Francisco. The Jewish New Testament, translated by David Stern, Jewish New Testament Publishing, Jerusalem, Israel. This is an excellent translation of the New Testament that celebrates the Jewishness of the Gospel through the rendering of names and terminology into the original Hebrew instead of Greek or Anglicized Greek. Mysteries by Mary Stewart set in modern Greece or Cyprus: My Brother Michael, The Moon-Spinners (also a movie with Hayley Mills), This Rough Magic. These books would be worth asking for at your library: A Woman Called Golda, the life of Golda Meir The Confessions of Saint Augustine Sadat, a biography of Anwar Sadat Any GOOD video store should carry these classics: The Ten Commandments with Charlton Heston as Moses; if you can't watch the whole thing, at least watch the part about Passover. Exodus This movie, based on the Leon Uris book, is a real tear-jerker; have plenty of tissues handy. Casablanca with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. This World War II film set in romantic Morocco is a classic well worth seeing over and over as time goes by. Play it again, Sam! (or, as the line really goes, "Play it, Sam. Play it for me.") You must remember this... The Agony and the Ecstasy with Charlton Heston. This is the story of Michaelangelo.
