Laptops Distribution Ceremony Laptops Distribution among eligible students of Social Work and Sociology (SW&S) department under Naway Sahar Laptop Scheme was held at Kohat University of Science & Technology. Prof. Shafiq ur Rahman, The Dean Faculty of Biological & Social Sciences, Prof. Fida Younis Khattak, Dean of Physical and Numerical Sciences, Dr. Tasleem, Dept. of Chemistry and Mr. Azad Khan Khattak, Director Academics, graced the occasion. In addition, chairpersons, concerned faculty members & admin staff were among the guests. The ceremony opened with recitation of few verses from the Holy Quran by Mr. Ehtisham Ul Haq, BS 4 th semester SW&S, which was followed by a welcome speech to the distinguished guests by the focal person. A brief account of Naway Sahar Laptop Scheme was given to the participants. After that Mr. Imran, Chairperson of SW&S, distributed 22 laptops among students of SW&S. The ceremony ended with a word of thanks from the organizer. Speed is essential for meeting the challenges of competition in today's digital era. Re-activation of Research & Development Cell (R&DC) has special significance in social sciences apart from its conventional association with scientific and technological development in the field. The department of SW&S has realized the worth of R&DC and re-activated the R&DC to promote research culture among students and teachers. R&DC is maintaining a database of different research projects held in the department. Students of this department can easily get access to the available research resources which will help a lot in their academic pursuit. (By: Zia Ullah Akhunzada) Participation in 2 nd National Level Academic Expo at University of Swat Students of SW&S along with Mr. Zia Ullah Akhunzada faculty member have participated in a two-day Academic Expo at University of Swat. Students from different public and private sector universities exhibited stalls of different items. Students of SW&S placed a commercial stall, participated in English speech and computer gaming competition. The stall of SW&S was visited on the opening day by the honorable chief guest, Vice Chancellor University of Peshawar, Prof. Dr. Rasool Jan, along with honorable chief host Vice Chancellor University of Swat, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Jehanzeb Khan. He eulogized the efforts of the students. The efforts of SW&S KUST students received high applause in the expo. On the 2 nd day, the worthy Vice Chancellor of KUST, Prof. Dr. Nasir Jamal Khattak was the guest of honor for the closing ceremony. He along with the chief host distributed prizes and

(By: Muhammad Shafiq) Workshop on Medical First Aid Awareness Keeping in mind the current situation of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the recurrence of various disasters in the shape of flood & earthquake, the Department of SW&S arranged a one-day workshop on Medical First Aid Awareness for the students and faculty members of SW&S, KUST. The aim of this workshop was to educate participants regarding the importance and application of First Aid in case of any emergency or disaster. First Aid, if timely provided, can save number of lives. The event started with recitation of few verses from the Holy Quran by Mr. Shahid Ali, M.Sc 2 nd semester SW&S. Major Muhammad Bilal was the resource person of the event who has a vast experience in the field of disaster management and relief operations with many national and international organizations. This was an interactive workshop and all the participants shared their experiences. Mr. Azad Khan Khattak, Director Academics, Dr. Hidayat Ullah of Economics Department and Mr. Syed Rashid Ali, Deputy Registrar, Establishment, KUST participated in the event as guests. Dr. Hidayat Ullah shared his experience of Japan regarding first aid and disaster management. Mr. Azad Khan Khattak distributed the certificates among the participants and commented with expectations that such activities might be nonstop and may be for all members of KUST family. Students Participates in Six Days Training Workshop Students from the Department of SW&S participated in Six Days Training Workshop on Agriculture and Livestock Farmers Training organized by Small Ruminant Research Institute. Apart from the local farmers and agriculturists, Mr. Kamrez Khan, Mr. Ihtisham Ulhaq, Mr. Qudratullah, Mr. Amjad Shoaib & Mr. Fahim Ullah attended the workshop from the students side. Mr. Hamid Khan (Agriculturist), Dr. Rashid, Dr. Qazi Asif, Dr. Ansar, and Dr. Alfat participated in the said activity as resource persons. They provided different information related to agriculture and livestock and also focused upon the mechanisms of improving the socio-economic status of the farmers. They also made fields visits along with the participants. Celebration of World Press Freedom Day To mark the twentieth annual World Press Freedom Day (WPFD), the department of SW&S organized a one-day seminar on the topic of Free Media and our Society: Responsibilities & Functions at the Conference Hall of the Kohat University of Science and Technology (KUST). The seminar was underway with recitation of few verses from the Holy Quran by Mr. Kamrez Khan, BS 6 th semester, SW&S. Speaking on the occasion Guest speaker Wajahat Karim, PRO KUST, said that after the expansion of the private media in the country, many positive developments had been made. Media organizations are considered to be the mirror of society. Dr. Nadeem Akhtar, Chairman Department of Journalism and Mass Communication participated in the event as Chief Guest. This is also the role of a sociologist and a social worker to understand the different socio-economic and psychological dynamics of human health and diseases and its impacts on society. The department of SW&S with the collaboration of Frontier Foundation Peshawar arranged a one day seminar on awareness about thalassemia. The event started with recitation of few verses from the Holy Quran by Ms. Saima Jamshid, BS 4 th semester SW&S. Dr. Mamoon Khan Khattak delivered a welcome note and highlighted the issue of thalassemia from different social dimensions. Mr. Tariq Usman (PRO) and Ms. Shazia (from Frontier Foundation, District Kohat Office) explained about the severity of thalassemia and its magnitude around the globe in general and in Pakistan in particular. In this connection, student s intradepartmental elections were held in the department. This society is comprised of different clubs like Academic Club, Recreational Club, Proctorial Club and Finance Club respectively. In this regard, students participated in election for electing members of different clubs. Each year a theme is selected for World Health Day that highlights a priority area of public health concern in the world. The theme for 2013 is high blood pressure. The seminar started with recitation of few verses from the Holy Quran by Mr. Ehtisham Ul Haq, BS 4 th semester SW&S. The speaker, Mr. Saqib Habib, from the Department of Population Welfare, district Kohat threw light on different aspects of World Health Day. He said that the ultimate goal of World Health Day 2013 is to promote greater awareness, healthy

The workshop was started with recitation of few verses from the Holy Quran by Mr. Nazir Ullah, BS 8 th semester Sociology. Mr. Farhatullah, Lecturer of Social Work, presented welcome note to the participants and Mr. Hayat Khan Yousafzai, Regional Coordinator, HRCP Peshawar Chapter briefed the audience about the aims and objectives of the workshop. Among the Resource Persons from KUST, Dr. Zeeshan Zeb Khattak (Director, IMS and Member of KUST Senate), Dr. Hidayatullah (Dept. of Economics), Mr. Shujaat Ali Rahi (Assistant Professor, Dept. of English), Mr. Muhammad Shafiq (Lecturer of Philosophy, Dept. of SW&S), Mr. Sarfaraz Khan (Lecturer Pakistan Studies and Deputy Controller Examinations), Hafiz Fazl-e-Umar (Lecturer in Center for Religious Studies) and Mr. Hafeez Buzdar (Program Manager) from HRCP Head Office, Lahore delivered their lectures along with different group activities. On the second day, the Guest of Honor, Dean of Sciences, KUST Prof. Fida Younas Khattak graced the occasion and shared his precious views about main theme of the workshop. Intra-departmental Discussion Corners Department of SW&S provide a platform for its students to express their talent. In relevance to this, the department arranged a couple of Intra-Departmental Discussion Corners. Mr. Omar Farooq (B.S 8 th Sociology) on employment opportunities for the students of SW&S in job market and Mr. Ehtisham-Ul-Haq (B.S 4 th Social Work and Sociology) on Hujra the Identity of Pakhtun Culture took part as guest speakers on the said topics. A large number of students participated and took part in the discussion. The Chairperson, expressed that the Department of SW&S for the first time started bi-monthly Intradepartmental Discussion Corner for students, where they can have the opportunity of flourishing their hidden potentials and to boost up their confidence for the upcoming challenges in the their practical life. Mr. Wajid Ali, Deputy Director Sports and Mr. Muhammad Ayaz, Lecturer in Pakistan Study and Senate Member of KUST, were invited as guests of honor. Mr. Tahir Afzal and Mr. Majeed Ullah Khan (IMS, KUST) were also present at the occasion as guests. Social Work Day at SW&S The Department of Social Work & Sociology (SW&S) celebrated Social Work day at KUST by raising cleanliness campaign at the department. In connection with the Social Work day, dustbins were placed so that waste material might be disposed off properly. Plant pots were also placed at different spots within the premises of department in order to give a pleasant environment. The purpose of celebrating Social Work day was to recognize the importance of cleanliness. During the day, students cleansed their classrooms, corridor and departmental lawn. On this occasion Mr. Imran, Chairperson of SW&S said that clean and sparkling department enhances love and interest of students for their subjects. He further added that it was the responsibility of all to keep the environment clean and healthy. Keeping in view the importance of learning particularly through digital resources, a lecture was organized by the department on Information Literacy with special focus on using HEC National Digital Library. The lecture was started with recitation of few verses from the Holy Quran by Mr. Shafqat Hakim, M.Sc 2 nd semester SW&S. Mr. Murad Ali, Deputy Librarian, KUST delivered a comprehensive lecture. He stressed upon the students that for development and a better career, it is the need of the hour that one should be in touch with the digital media and resources. Students from different semesters particularly from final semesters keenly attended the lecture and asked number of questions related to information literacy. The resource person answered all the questions and extended his appreciation to the students and organizers.
