Church of the Resurrection Holy Trinity St. Michael s & San Gabriel at St. Michaels HAMILTON, ONTARIO St. Stephen on the Mount Fall 2015 Newsletter re-printed with permission from hamilton community news Resurrection Community Garden in the news Hamilton Mountain News By Gord Bowes It s been a good first year in the garden at Church of the Resurrection. So far this summer, there s been a good haul of leafy greens, the zucchini is growing large and there will be many tomatoes and green peppers to harvest soon. It s very plentiful, says Pam Wood, who co-ordinates the church volunteers to ensure the 13 beds that were set up in early May are weeded and watered daily. It s unbelievable from where it started. The west Mountain church is one of a dozen sites working under the Hamilton Victory Gardens umbrella. Overall, the 12 garden sites have yielded about one-quarter of the 65,000-pound goal for 2015. Last Saturday at Church of the Resurrection, volunteers were harvesting onion, carrot, kale, tomato, pepper, zucchini and beets. Most of the harvest from the site is being given to Neighbour to Neighbour s food bank. Hamilton Victory Gardens is always looking for volunteers and materials for its sites across the city.

Holy Trinity 120 Fennell Ave. East, Hamilton, ON, L9A 1S1 905-383-2951 Our parish is becoming a little more settled with the part-time ministry of the Reverend Holly Klemmensen. Holly has secured another appointment as half-time Pastoral Associate at St. Luke s Church in Burlington. Canon Terry DeForest is our Priest-in-Charge and support to Holly. We are constantly reminded and thankful for all the clerical help from Canon Terry, other Diocesan clergy, and especially the Mountain Ministry team that was provided to us during the absence of a Rector and who still provides tremendous support to us. It was good to get to know you all! Thursday, June 11th was a great occasion! It was the Feast of St. Barnabas and the Ordination of three deacons and a priest at Christ s Church Cathedral. Pastor Holly was one of the deacons. The ordaining Bishops were our own Diocesan Bishop Michael Bird, but also Bishop Kobina Ben Smith from the Diocese of Asante Mampong, Province of West Africa. Holy Trinity folk came out in great numbers as well as other folks where Holly has served prior to her appointment at Holy Trinity. It was a wonderful, inspiring service. A memorial service took place on Sunday, July 12th in memory of our late Rector, The Reverend David Toth. Canon Terry DeForest was the Celebrant and preacher. It was well attended by our Holy Trinity family as well as the Toth family. During the service, a memorial plaque was placed in the Church in David s memory. After a bit of a slow start, our Victory Gardens are bearing fruit and we hope to equal or exceed the amount of produce we harvested last year. Our volunteers are few, but very determined. We are looking forward to gathering with the Mohawk Lay Leaders on September 26th at St. Paul s Church in Caledonia and also our Mountain Ministry joint Celebration Service hosted by St. Michael s on Wednesday, October 21st. Saint Francis of Assisi Saint Francis was born in Assisi in 1181/1182 to Pica and Pietro Bernadone. His Father Pietro was a wealthy cloth merchant and it was envisioned that Francis would grow up to take over the family business for which he showed remarkable aptitude as a sales man. Know as a lover of parties and fine clothing Francis also longed to prove himself in battle gaining social status as a Knight. Injured and imprisoned for a year after his first battle Francis became very sick and when recovered had lost his joy in life and increasingly went walking and spent time in prayer. One day praying in the ruins of the chapel of San Damiano, Francis heard Christ speak to him from the criucifix there: Francis, go and repair my church which has fallen into ruins. At first taking this literally he begged for the materials to repair San Damiano. After a showdown in the Bishop s court Francis disowned his earthly father so that he might only say Our Father in heaven He gave up all his worldly possessions and chose to live in poverty, nursing lepers, helping the poorest in society, and swiftly others were drawn to his total abandonment to Christ. Known as a peacemaker (he tried to stop the crusades) and as a lover of creation and a fervent preacher. Francis died on October 4th 1226. The Praises of God (by Saint Francis of Assisi) You are holy Lord God who does wonderful things. You are strong. You are great. You are the most high. You are the almighty king. You holy Father, King of heaven and earth. You are three and one, the Lord God of gods; You are the good, all good, the highest good, Lord God, living and true. You are love, charity, You are wisdom, You are humility, You are patience, You are beauty, You are meekness, You are security, You are rest, You are gladness and joy, You are our hope, You are justice, You are moderation, You are all our riches to sufficiency. You are beauty, You are meekness, You are the protector, You are our custodian and defender, You are strength, You are refreshment. You are our hope, You are our faith, You are our charity, You are all our sweetness, You are our eternal life: Great and wonderful Lord, Almighty God, Merciful saviour. A note from the Editor: Please note that this newsletter is open to submissions from anyone who is a part of the Mountain Ministry Group congregations - we would like to hear your stories, not just provide an update on what s coming up. Feel free to share your stories, we d all like to hear! Next newsletter will be just prior to Advent. Speak to the clergy in your parish about how to make your submissions.

A Prayer for the Refugee Crisis Heavenly Father, you are the source of all goodness, generosity and love. We thank you for opening the hearts of many to those who are fleeing for their lives. Help us now to open our arms in welcome, and reach out our hands in support. That the desparate may find new hope, and lives torn apart be restored. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, Our Lord, who fled persecution at His birth and at His last triumphed over death. Amen
