Surrounded by Our Martyrs Some were tortured, refusing to accept release that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, chains and imprisonment. They were stoned. They were sawn in two. They were killed with the sword. They went about in animal skins destitute, af flicted, ill-treated. The world was not worthy of them yet they wan dered over deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth. All of these people, though their faith was well-attested, did not receive what was promised. For God had foreseen something better for us: that apart from us they should not be made perfect. And now we are surrounded by this great cloud of witnesses (Hebrews 11:35-12:1) On this day of solemn remembrance, we offer prayers for our beloved ancestors who perished in the Armenian Genocide of 1915. We recall the words of Scripture that seem to echo with their sufferings even as they echo with our own awareness that we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, whose vindication in this world lies in our hands. Today ninety-nine years after the beginning of the Genocide we affirm our abiding hope in the resurrection of our Lord, and the promise it holds for our departed countrymen, and for all mankind. May that hope guide us in the coming year. With prayers, Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate ACYOA Hye M'rtsoom Watertown Maestro Konstantin Petrossian Awarded The prestigious Saint Sahag and Saint Mesrob Medal was presented and awarded to Maestro Konstantin Petrossian accompanied by an encyclical from His Holiness, Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of all-armenians by His Eminence, Archbishop. Khajag Barsamian on Friday June 13th at the conclusion of a magnificent concert to kick-off the Centennial celebrations of Saints Sahag and Mesrob Armenian Church of Providence Rhode Island. Maestro Konstantin, an extremely well regarded composer, director and musicologist who has devoted the past 20 years of his life to service at Saints Sahag and Mesrob Church and has served not only as the director of music, but of culture and arts, has established and maintained art, music and cultural programs which have benefited the church and the faithful during his years of service. As the Musical Director also of the Armenian Chorale of Rhode Island and the Erevan Chorale of Holy Trinity Armenian Church of Greater Boston he has offered many memorable concerts throughout the years throughout the US North East and Canada. Recently honored by President Serj Sargsyan and the Republic of Armenia with the Khorenatsi Award, he now receives the highest honor of the Armenian Apostolic Church and His Holiness for his excellence in service to the church and the Armenian nation. Said Father Souin, "We are so proud that this most prestigious award by His Holiness could be delivered by our Primate on the glorious occasion of this magnificent concert in honor and celebration of our Church s Centennial. Maestro s talents and services to this church shall forever be memorialized with this very well deserved award." 100 Years of Light, Hope and Faith To you all, my dear faithful, I offer my congratulations and blessings. Let us enjoy the fruits of our labor and let us be refreshed with the spirit of our founders, in order to carry our torch high and be the light of the world and together offer thanksgiving and glory to Almighty God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit for this privilege of having celebrated the l00th Anniversary of our church; In His Providence, with Light, Hope and Faith. Prayerfully Fr. Shnork Souin, Pastor Prayerfully Fr. Shnork Souin IN GOD'S PROVIDENCE, ONE YEAR AT A TIME, A CENTURY OF LIGHT HOPE AND FAITH. YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. A CITY THAT I5 SET ON A HILL CANNOT BE HIDDEN. MATTHEW 5:14 Upon my first few visits to Rhode Island, I would look beyond the skyline of Providence, while entering the city on Route 95, with great anticipation to see the Cupola of our Church crowned by the blue Cross which has stood as a beacon not only for Armenians but for those who have traveled these roads for many years. I learned very early that Smith Hill, upon which our Church stands like a fortress, was the hub of Armenian community life, initially inhabited by the survivors of genocide and those seeking a new life in the land of liberty and justice. As the center of Armenian community life therefore it was both appropriate and providential that 100 years ago Saints Sahag and Mesrob Armenian Church was bought and consecrated becoming the center of spiritual, cultural, and social life for a storied Armenian community. As we look back and recall the memories of preceding generations, we realize the supernatural presence of the Holy Spirit who has guided, inspired and directed them in their service to and for the church and community. What a gift and a legacy we have been left. They knew what they needed and planned for the needs of future generations! The Church has remained not only a beacon and a sign of God's enduring love for our people, but a light to the world. The celebration of our Centennial is not only a milestone in our history but a sign that we continue to be by God s Grace, the Light of the World and a Beacon set on the Hill, in order to fulfill our prophetic role as one faithful community from generation to generation, steadfast in the faith of our forefathers and resolute to build upon the solid foundation that has been bequeathed to us. May God bless and illuminate the souls of those who have fallen asleep, both the clergy and the faithful of this parish, and may He bless our congregation and secure the generations of our future with a living faith and the light of Christ and may we graciously and loving welcome and embrace any who come to our state and seek fellowship among our communion. I hope and pray that this special edition of the Paros, dedicated to the Centennial will be a blessed reminder of the wonderful weekend with which we were blessed by God and that the memories that were created will sustain and edify us for our mission into the next century with the same enthusiasm, love and hope with which our founders began theirs. Parish Council Corner (Speech given at 100 th Anniversary Banquet) Members of our Parish Family: It is my distinct pleasure, on behalf of the Parish Council of Saints Sahag and Mesrob Church, to welcome you to the celebration of our 100th Anniversary as a parish in the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America. This is truly a momentous occasion in the history of our parish. One hundred glorious years of providing spiritual fulfillment for all of the people of our parish is a major accomplishment indeed. This church has been a place for us to be together during times of great joy and great sadness. From our baptism to our funeral, the church is with us. We look to our church to help guide us and give us comfort. There is no greater feeling than being a member of our beloved parish. We often speak of our church with the pride of being a member of a family that we have grown up with, learned from, and, certainly always respected. We experience great joy coming to church on a Sunday and, not only praying to our Lord, but doing it with those people whom we have known for most of our lives. Worshiping together with those we love gives us a wonderful feeling of peace and joy. As a parish family, we are well aware of the awesome responsibility that goes with being a member of the Parish Council of this church. We are the descendants of those faithful members of the original Parish Council of Saints Sahag and Mesrob Armenian Church who paved the way for future generations. We should never forget the tremendous work done by these people. Through their hard work and sacrifice, they have set the example for all future Parish Councils to follow. We would not be here tonight celebrating one hundred years without their laying such a strong foundation for our church. I am optimistic that we will pass along that same sense of dedication and sacrifice to our youth today. We are their role models and take the responsibility very seriously. With God s help, I have faith that we will leave our church in good hands and our future will be bright. I sincerely thank you for being here tonight and for all the love that you have shown to our church throughout the years. I also thank you in advance for your continued love and support as we enter our next one hundred years. John R. Kazarian Parish Council Chairman April/May/June 2014 6 Paros Saints Sahag and Mesrob

HOLY TRANSLATORS ARMENIAN SCHOOL CELEBRATES OUR CHURCH AND FAITH Hantes 2014 DEDICATED TO THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY SAINTS SAHAG AND MESROB ARMENIAN APOSTOLIC CHURCH, PROVIDENCE It is with great happiness that we write about the Armenian School Hantes celebration of 100th anniversary of Saint Sahag and Saint Mesrob Armenian Apostolic Church on Sunday June 8, of 2014. The pride that the students feel for their church and the second home that it has become to them was felt amongst all those who attended our year-end Hantes Program. on Sunday, June 8. It was a touching moment that came at the end of our Hantes which came at the conclusion of the song, Yegeghehtzeen Haygagan The Armenian Church., ( Tthis was the last song the students were to sing during the performance and they had been practicing for months to sing it together and with feeling), a. As if on cue, Baron Boghos, an elder of our parish symbolically passed our faith from one generation to the next by carrying a lighted a candle and giving it to the tiniest youngest member of our Armenian School family, Armine Ayriyan. God Bless our little ones and each generation. Each year, the Holy Translators Armenian School of Saints Sahag and Mesrob Church presents a Hantes focusing on a certain point in Armenian History or aspect of our Orthodox Faith. This year s theme was the blessed 100th year Anniversary of our beautiful and faithful parish in Providence. Our Armenian School is comprised of loving students ranging in age from 4 years old to adult. Each student age group participated in this year-end program and added their unique representation of the church that makes us whole, and united and strong. This year s Hantes also celebrated the achievement of Maria Kasparian and Anna Robinson, two adult students who have been studying with Deegeen Marie Ghajanian for several years now and have earned certificates of Achievement from our School and Diocese. Beginning with the Hayr Mer through prayers followed by the Armenian National Anthem, spiritual songs, dance, and poetry each grade of students expressed how the Armenian Church is the foundation of our people. The church and what is means was woven in the recitation of The Days of the Week, the dancing to celebrate Hampartsoom, (the feast of Ascension), and finally the song of Yegeghetsin Haygagan, (The Armenian Church). Both Miss Kasparian and Miss Robinson read their personal essays in Armenian entitled, Why I wanted to Learn Armenian. Thank you one and all for your support of this year-end Hantes and of our dear Armenian School and her students. - Lisa Surmeian Lily Janigian, Mark Shaghalian and Grace Ferrara, all Sunday School Students each wrote articles on the occasion of the 99 th Genocide Commemoration. Anna Robinson Armenian School Essay In four years of Armenian school I learned much. Now I understand Armenian conversation a little better, I speak Armenian a little better and I continue to work to speak more confidently. I love the compound words of the Armenian language. For example the word Bible, the Breath of God, Asdvadsashoonch. To me the compound words are poetry. My love for my grandmother and her life story inspired me so I came to Armenian school. The beauty and the richness of the Armenian language, Ms. Marie and my classmates motivated me and I continued to come these years to attend Armenian school. - Anna Robinson On The Web More photos from the Hantes can be found at http://tinyurl.com/hantes2014 April/May/June 2014 7 Paros Saints Sahag and Mesrob

Lily Janigian, Mark Shaghalian and Grace Ferrara, all Sunday School Students each wrote articles on the occasion of the 99th Genocide Commemoration. KRIKOR ZOHRAB SIAMANTO (1878-1915 Krikor Zohrab was a member of the Ottoman Chamber of Deputies, living in Constantinople. He was an Armenian writer, politician and layer. He was born on June 26, 1861. During the Armenian Genocide he was arrested by the Turkish government and was then murdered in 1915. During his life, he went to the Imperial University of Jurisprudence and received a law degree. He was a lawyer, then a professor and was married with two sons. He defended many Armenians. He worked hard to try to stop the Armenian Genocide and all of the mass killings. He demanded explanation of this from the Turks. Many people knew he was in danger and warned him to leave the country, but he refused. He was arrested the following day and had to show up before court. He was taken and murdered by a band of brigands led by Cerkez Ahmed. - Lily Janigian RUBEN ZARTARIAN Ruben Zaratarian was an Armenian writer, educator, and political activist. He worked for number of newspapers including Razmig and Azadamard. Zartarian also wrote poems and stories. Some of his stories were The Petrified, The Lake s Bride, Red Flowers, The Injured Hunter, The Prisoner s Tears, and Home Love. These stories resembled realistic fiction type writings. Zartarian was a political activist. He supported Armenian rights. Due to these convictions and beliefs he was arrested and deported several times. This came to a head when on the final time he was arrested and executed by the Turkish government. - Mark Shagalian Siamanto, the pen name for Atom Yarjanian, was an Armenian writer and poet. Born in Armenia to an upper middle class family, he lived in Armenia for fourteen years, attended school and developed an interest in poetry. The school s director gave him his nickname Siamanto. In 1891, his family moved to Constantinople. He continued his studies and graduated in 1896 at the time of the Hamidian massacres. Siamanto fled the country, as did many Armenian intellectuals, for fear of persecution. He ended up in Egypt, depressed at what was happening to the Armenian people. In 1897, he moved to Paris and attended the prestigious Sorbonne University to study literature. He worked many jobs because of financial difficulties but loved reading in French and Armenian and enjoyed literature and philosophy. He eventually moved to Geneva, Switzerland and worked for a newspaper. His writings were distributed outside of the Ottoman Empire as they condemned the Turkish government. He hoped his works would get international attention to help the Armenians. He truly believed that Armenia should be free from Turkish oppression. In 1908, Siamanto returned to Constantinople with many other Armenians. They returned because of a change in the Ottoman government and they believed they were freed from oppression. However, in 1909, the Turkish government made it clear that the Armenians were not safe and enforced the Adana massacre. This encouraged him to publish My Friend s Heroically about the hardship of Armenians. Siamanto s works dealt with death, torture, loss and sorrow from the slaughter of the Armenian people. The suffering was tormenting him and writing about it was how he coped. He wrote about hope, freedom and better future. He encouraged the youth to stand up for their rights because doing nothing was not going to save them. In 1913 he moved to Tbilisi in Georgia and was able to visit many famous Armenian landmarks. In 1915, along with many other intellectuals, he was arrested, tortured and killed by the Ottomans during the Armenian Genocide. - Grace Ferrara On The Web http://zohrabcenter.org/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/rupen_zartarian http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/siamanto April/May/June 2014 8 Paros Saints Sahag and Mesrob

Sunday School Graduation Back Row (L to R): Eric Harpootian, Der Hayr Shnork Souin, Der Hayr Nersess Jebejian, Adam Parnagian Front Row (L to R): Anna Robinson - Graduating Class Teacher, Elise Papazian, Paul Hazian, David Ayrassian, Mari Megrdichian, Taylor Rainho, Garen Megrdichian Each of the Graduates presented an oral essay on what Sunday School meant to them. David Ayrassian For the last ten years my colleagues and I have been raised to learn the importance of God and also the importance of being brought up in an Armenian Church. One of the importance results in being associated with an Armenian church is having a strong faith in God. I know it s important to have a strong faith in God because it provides comfort and the inspiration to live a happier and longer life. Saints Sahag and Mesrob Armenian Church has instilled this faith in the Sunday School program. I think it s important to be raised in the Armenian Church. There are many important roles in our church environment. There are many leaders including Der Hye that are very inspirational and that make you want to become a better person. I believe that these kinds of people make the church experience more gratifying not only for myself but for everyone around us. They set very positive role models for the church youth. Finally, I believe that being raised in an Armenian church helps teach and assist teenagers like me about social friendships. Being raised in an Armenian Church helped me create many social relationships with my fellow peers. Knowing these people from a young age until present time has created so many social opportunities for me now and in the near future. Not only having great friends from our Sunday School but also being able to talk to multiple generations of Armenians at outside events is truly unbelievable. The above reasons made it very important to me to be raised in an Armenian Church. It is not only being around fellow Armenians but being able to learn the heritage and background. Also being able to discover faith of the Armenian Church. Attending an Armenian church and church activities made me better understand how to be a better Christian and also becoming better to understand faith and how to be right with God. By attending an Armenian church it made me an overall better person but it also helped me realize that these types of things you don t take for granted. Eric Harpootian The reason I start with the sign of the cross is because the cross is the foundation of our Christian faith. When we walk through the doors of our church, we make the sign of the cross. We do this to recognize God s holy presence among us. We make the sign of cross when His name is mentioned and to show our respect. It is also a symbol of God coming upon us whenever we need it. I cross myself when I feel scared, during prayer, or when I need comfort. Whatever the instance, I know that He will always be there for me and give me power. The sign of the cross is very important to us and is a tool that can be used for strength in our lives. As Christians, the cross is a vital part of our religion; it represents who we are and who God wants us to be. The significance of the history of the cross is that Jesus, our savior, sacrificed His life for us on the cross. Through his brutal and suffering we have God's love, mercy, and grace. That is the greatest gift a Christian can have and it is our job to live and be worthy of it. God is always there for us and the cross is our reminder. God blesses us with our lives and he has put the cross over us to show us the way of Christian living. We need to pick up our personal crosses and carry them on our daily journey, like Jesus did. We face daily challenges, struggles, persecution, and temptations but the cross is what reminds us of the joy, peace, and everlasting life that God promised us through Jesus death on the cross. When we wear crosses, it rests on our heart symbolizing God at the center of our lives. We keep the cross to show to others our Christian faith is strong. He watches over and protects us as we embark on our daily struggles that we face in our Christian life. We wear a cross to show our strength and pride in our Armenian heritage. The cross that we wear illuminates our faith to the outside world. It gives us protection that is always with us. Along with many other Armenians, I always wear my cross. It is a way that I show my Armenian pride. The cross holds a lot of meaningful symbolism, and I take it as a privilege to be able to wear it. Paul Hazian Every Sunday of this past decade will always remain as some of my most eminent memories along with hundreds of people that I have come to know and love. Ever since my first kindergarten class with my fellow graduates and I, the Armenian Church has made an everlasting implant on my character and soul. Every teacher I ve had, every class I ve been in, and every beautiful song I ve heard has shaped me into the Armenian I am today. Not to mention cultural memories and festivities that have shaped my attitude and personality towards my religion. Never during the school year was my day of rest spent sleeping, or sitting at home. I can t even think back to a time where Sundays didn t mean going to church and being with the people that share my love for God. Never was waking up before 10:00 on a weekend ideal, but yet I never found it as a chore, or something that I had to do. Hearing the settling and familiar voices of our chorus brought love and inspiration to the beginning of a new day. Every lesson brought upon me and every bit of passion displayed by each and every one of my teachers has brought influence into my life and has helped me to grow and love this church. And no, it may not be my graduating senior class of high school, or even my college graduation, but today symbolizes a celebration all its own. Today is a day in which I carry on everything that Sunday School and the lessons of our parish has taught me into a world that needs as many lessons as it can get. Today is where I make sure that for the rest of my life, everything that God, my teachers, and my family has instilled in me has been worthwhile. It s funny, it wasn t until last night, even after all these years of Sunday School, that I felt a special connection between my fellow graduates and I. For the first time in my memories of being at church, I finally felt like I was at school with the people I see from day to day. A night spent rehearsing and taking pictures, along with a few laughs followed by some slices of pizza, will never be forgotten. While last night was nothing to be considered out of the ordinary, I can honestly say it was one of the happiest and friendliest memories that I will carry with me. So when asked how I would like to serve the Armenian Church as I grow into adulthood, I pondered the thought for a while. It occurred to me that the most respectable and honorable thing I can do for my church is not necessarily to become a teacher s assistant, not to help serve food at festivals and events, and not even necessarily to continue coming to church every Sunday like I know I should. I believe the best way I can serve my church is to continue being, and becoming the man that my church, my family and my God has taught me to be; to show everyone I meet that I am a member of the Armenian Church, that I have graduated and completed my years of Sunday School, and that the voice God uses to speak through me can also be heard by the people whose lives I touch. As many of you know, my Nana taught Sunday School in this church for 30 years and touched the lives of hundreds of students. We would have loved for her to be here with us today, but we have to believe that she is close by, watching and listening. As much as my Nana loved this church and my mother was raised here, I grew to love my church and my faith on my own. I owe a lot of my faith to her example and it s safe to say I am here today because of her and the rest of my family Garen Megrdichian I plan on serving the Armenian Church in many ways, but the most important way for me to be a part of our church is by serving God and to continue to serve on the altar of our Lord Jesus Christ. Our church has given me many opportunities since I was born. The church baptized me and when I began coming to Sunday School with Miss Tamar as my first teacher, then all the other teachers including Miss Anna, I have become a part of the church and the church is a part of me. When I was younger, I saw my grandfather and my uncle serve on the altar and I wanted to be like them and do what they were doing. Hayr Simeon was our priest here at Saints Sahag and Mesrob and he began teaching me along with Baron Hagop how to become an acolyte. When we would attend family events, my uncle would instruct me to put on a shabig and help him out with whatever sacrament he was performing. Each summer when I went to Saint Vartan Camp, I would help with services in the chapel. October 2012, I was ordained a Tbir, and now, Der Shnork spends time to educate me on becoming a Sub-Deacon. My mom, dad, and Uncle Hayr Soorp tell me stories about my Great Grand Uncle Archbishop Tiran Nersoyan. He was a well-known clergyman who founded Saint Nersess Armenian Seminary in New York and also founded the ACYOA. Both are important parts of the life in our church today and our future. I would like to continue Archbishop Tiran s legacy by doing my part in the Armenian Church. I hope to read and learn more about him. I would like to thank my Uncle Hayr Soorp Aren, Hayr Simeon, Der Nersess, and Der Shnork for keeping me along the right path. Mari Megrdichian The Armenian Church has meant a lot to my family for a long time. My parents and my grandparents are all active people in the Armenian Church. My Grandfather is a priest and my other Grandpa sings from his pew every week in church. My uncle is also a celibate priest, So there is a lot of history in my family. I hope to continue to serve our church in a lot of different ways, my dad always says that the church needs our time, talent, and treasure. I have spent a lot of time at church helping out at events with ACYOA or other church activities. My talent is to sing. I will continue singing for our Lord and this church in our church choir on Sundays. I also think that by singing often at church, it will help me reach other singing goals. I have loved all my Sunday School teachers, they are very special people to me. Each one of them taught me something new and different about our Armenian religion and heritage. I think it s very special that we are graduating Sunday School during the 100th Anniversary of our church. This church has been around for 100 years, and I hope that by sharing my talents I will help to make a difference in the future. Maybe one day, I can tell my children or grandchildren that I was there to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of our church. Another thing my Dad often reminds me is to put God first, others second, me third. It s hard sometimes to follow those words, but by continuing to serve in our Armenian Church I will strive to keep God first in my life, and put others before me. I would like to thank Der Shnork, I learned a lot from his sermons about our scripture and also how the scriptures relate to my life. I would like to also thank all my teachers, Miss Debbie, and my family for all their support along the way. There were Sundays when I didn t want to go to church, but my parents brought me every week. Now we re graduating and moving on to help our church the way our families have done for the last 100 years. Elise Papazian The Armenian Church has always held a special place in my life, but it is much more than just a means of worship. It is a place of fellowship and community, and we are held together not only in faith but also in our heritage. I ve seen both the Catholic masses and the Badarak many times, and I love the elaborate Divine Liturgy and all of the beautiful songs and chants. Nothing can compare to that. And here we are celebrating 100 years of this parish here in Providence that has survived difficult times and overcome obstacles over the years. Involvement with this church is more than just a Sunday commitment; there are always dinners, concerts, picnics, bazaars, and other events to look forward to that keep our culture alive. I have especially enjoyed my time in the ACYOA and taking part in projects and then traveling to Armenia last summer. This place is so much more than just a church, which is what makes it so unique. It s really a beautiful thing to come to a church where everyone knows you and where you can see so many familiar faces. It is in this fellowship that makes this community such a special thing to be a part of. The bond of faith is strong; but it is the community and culture that hold it in place and keep it together. We are united in our past, together in this present, and will be in the future too. Taylor Rainho Good morning. My name is Taylor Rainho. Thank you all for being present for our Sunday school graduation. This morning I would like to share with you a message about my favorite biblical parable. My favorite story has has always been the Parable of the Lost Son. Every year during Lent, this story would be told, and I always admired the deep and meaningful lessons found in it. Though the son betrayed his father, and spent all his inheritance, in the end he was welcome home with open arms. This parable taught me about my relationship with God. I knew that as long as I remained faithful, God would forgive me of my sins. I am reminded of this message every week as the Sunday School goes up to receive communion. As I continue throughout life, I hope to keep this knowledge close to my heart, even outside of Church. After I graduate Sunday School, I will make certain to continue coming to Church every Sunday and stray away from the path of the lost son s older brother. This brother was not faithful to his father. Though he had served him faithfully for many years, he still expected a reward as his younger brother had received. However, Sunday School taught me that faith is about giving without receiving a reward. I look forward to using what I learned in Sunday School throughout my life, and learn more as I return every week.
