March 2017 Connecting Church and Community Fairview United Methodist Church Maryville, Tennessee March 5, 2017 March 11, 2017 From the Pastor s Desk Today, "Ash Wednesday" marks the beginning of a new season in the Christian Church. It's the season of Lent (the word literally means "Spring season"), a time the Christian Church has historically focused on "disciplining" the body, mind and spirit through spiritual practices. Along the way that idea evolved into "giving up" something for Lent. Another way of looking at is, "Lent is a time for adopting and practicing the disciplines that would prepare us to receive the mystery of Easter (P. Wilson)." In recent years, the emphasis has been on "taking on" something for Lent, rather than "giving up" something. The writers of "The New Handbook of the Christian Year" have said, "Lent is...taking upon ourselves the intention and the receptivity to God's grace so that we may worthily participate in the mystery of God with us." Oh, we have all but forgotten about "God with us," "Emmanuel," haven't we? And yet Lent calls us back to remember God's plan all along. "Intentionality" and "receptivity to God's grace" become two things to "take upon" ourselves during Lent. What would that look like? It would certainly include: repentance, fellowship, prayer, fasting, meditation on the Scriptures, worship, reflection on the meaning of our baptism, and acts of service to others. Such intentionality becomes the means by which we experience anew God's grace in our lives. We want to help you to prepare in such a way that you do not just leap into the celebration of Easter. We want to help you with the journey to "receive the mystery of Easter." In addition to the special worship services (Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday), we want to encourage you to be in worship each Sunday of Lent as we move through a new sermon series called "Hostage." The goal of this series is to look at some of those wilderness places of our lives where we get stuck, but they are places where God's grace can still find us and transform us. Here's what the next few weeks are going to look like: March 5 "Hostage: Bitterness" Hebrews 12.14-15 March 12 "Hostage: Worry" Romans 14.23 March 19 "Hostage: Addictions" Genesis 4.7 March 26 "Hostage: Anger" Ephesians 4.26-27 April 2 "Hostage: Lies" 2 Corinthians 10.3-4 I look forward to seeing you as we come together to worship the living God this Sunday. You know what I always say at this point? The beginning of a new series is a great time to invite someone to join you for worship. Who might that be? May God give you the grace to keep a "holy Lent." With my love and prayers, Pastor Mickey

We will provide breakfast for the Sunday School class that raises the most money between February 19 and March 5 for the: Pregnancy Resource Center 3028 Old Niles Ferry Rd. Their mission is to minister to the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of those facing difficult decisions regarding unplanned pregnancies by offering life-affirming alternatives to abortion, to promote God s plan for sexual purity, and to offer God s restoration to those who are hurting from past abortions. Just as we did last year we will determine the winning class based on a per capita amount. In order to do this we will use the attendance books to discern the number of class members, so please make sure your book is up to date. You also need to make sure your class name is on the bottle tag. On the church line put FUMC Class Name. Last year we raised $7412.72. The Topical class who averaged $60.29 per class member was treated to breakfast. Good Luck!

Attention Volunteers! John 316 Outreach Community Workday Saturday, March 25th: 8am-12pm Kick-off Celebration 7:30am at Fairview UMC (2508 Old Niles Ferry Rd. You will be contacted via email to confirm your jobsite location and project leader. If you don't want to volunteer to be on a job site but love to bake, organize, or clean- then we have something special for you too! So mark your calendars, begin to pray for God's presence on this day, and spread the word! Forward this email to friends, family, and co-workers- because... TOGETHER, we make a DIFFERENCE! Questions? Call 865-336-9262 If you wish to sign up for altar flowers for this year, the blue sign-up book is in the Narthex of the sanctuary, or contact Millie Stoutt at mstoutt@utk.edu or 621-6594. This may seem early, but you may also go ahead and sign up for the Easter lilies; Easter is April 16. There is a sign-up sheet in the back of the blue book; we don't know the exact price yet for the lilies as it usually depends on how well the crop does this year. Symbolism of flowers on the altar -- resurrection. The news is out.. Youth Choir will be traveling to Michigan for their summer tour! The choir meets on Sundays at 4:00 in the choir room. If you are a youth planning to go on tour you must be at practice. Please keep the preparations and everyone involved in tour in your prayers as we start another great year of bringing Jesus to another city! We are going to have "Church work days" starting the weekend of March 11th and going until April 8th. We ask that every Sunday School class commit to a block of time to work on some much needed tasks at the church. The class can pick the date/time that works best for them and communicate with Jamie Chapman to coordinate the church being open and supplies being available. A list of tasks that need to be worked on is being developed and will be offered on a fist come fist served basis. I will be coming around and speaking to individual Sunday School classes over the next few weeks to get them signed up. Or a representative can contact me directly via email-jlcpharmd@gmail.com

Campus Remedy is excited to announce. Jamie Talley will be with us as our Intern Worship Leader! Jamie feels led to join the ministry and we are blessed to have him interning with us as he pursues what God has planned for him! Save the Date...Remedy Work Day April 1 John 316 Community Work Day March 25 See Paul Priest on Sunday for more details!
