Holy Eucharist in Celebration of Stewardship Friday, July 30, 2010 2:15 p.m. Prelude: All Will Be Well Words and music by D. Hutchison Words of Welcome Jonathan & Deborah Hutchison Canon Rees Olander Opening Hymn 400 Liturgy of the Word Words: St. Francis of Assisi (1882-1226); tr. William H. Draper (1855-1933), alt. Music: Lasst uns erfreuen, melody from Auserlesene Catholische Geistiche Kirchengeseng, 123; adapt. and harm. Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)

The people remain standing for The Acclamation Bishop People The Collect of the Day Bishop People Bishop The people sit for the lessons. The Lessons Blessed be the one, holy, and living God. Glory to God for ever and ever. God be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O merciful Creator, your hand is open wide to satisfy the needs of every living creature: Make us always thankful for your loving providence; and grant that we, remembering the account that we must one day give, may be faithful stewards of your good gifts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. First Reading Isaiah 55:1-11 A Reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah. Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. See, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. See, you shall call nations that you do not know, and nations that do not know you shall run to you, because of the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you. Seek the Lord while he may be found, call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake their way, and the unrighteous their thoughts; let them return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. Reader People Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. 2

The people stand and are invited to sing the psalm to simplified Anglican chant. Each half verse of the psalm is sung on the reciting note up to the last accented syllable. Psalm 92 1 It is a good thing to give thanks to the LORD, * and to sing praises to your Name, O Most High; 2 To tell of your loving-kindness early in the morning * and of your faithfulness in the night season; 3 On the psaltery, and on the lyre, * and to the melody of the harp. 4 For you have made me glad by your acts, O LORD; * and I shout for joy because of the works of your hands. 12 Those who are planted in the house of the LORD * shall flourish in the courts of our God; 13 They shall still bear fruit in old age; * they shall be green and succulent; 2nd half 14 That they may show how upright the LORD is, * my Rock, in whom there is no fault. Second Reading Colossians 3:5-17 A Reading from Paul s letter to the Church in Colossae. Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). On account of these the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient. These are the ways you also once followed, when you were living that life. But now you must get rid of all such things anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator. In that renewal there is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all! As God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Reader People Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. 3

The people stand for Sequence Hymn 397 Words: Martin Rinkart (1586-1649); tr. Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878), alt. Music: Nun danket alle Gott, melody Johann Cruger (1598-1662); harm. William Henry Monk (1823-1889), after Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1947) The people remain standing for the Gospel Procession. Holy Gospel Luke 18:18-27 Gospeller People The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ. A certain ruler asked him, Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; Honour your father and mother. He replied, I have kept all these since my youth. When Jesus heard this, he said to him, There is still one thing lacking. Sell all that you own and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me. But when he heard this, he became sad; for he was very rich. Jesus looked 4

at him and said, How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. Those who heard it said, Then who can be saved? He replied, What is impossible for mortals is possible for God. Gospeller People The people sit for The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon A period of silence follows the sermon. The people stand for The Prayers of the People That we may turn to God for guidance and direction as we strive to serve one another and the Church with the gifts God has entrusted to our care. Open our hearts, Lord, To serve you with joy. That we may more easily choose to serve rather than to be served, to give rather than to take, to contribute rather than to consume. Open our hearts, Lord, To serve you with joy. That we may learn to more deeply trust God to provide us with all that we need. Open our hearts, Lord, To serve you with joy. 5 The Rev. Dr. Walter Breuggemann That we may learn to see the difference between the simple things we need and the many things we want. Open our hearts, Lord, To serve you with joy. That, like the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may say Yes to what God calls us to do, always remembering that God has done great things for us. Open our hearts, Lord, To serve you with joy. That, through our good stewardship, we may build up God s kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven. Open our hearts, Lord, To serve you with joy. That we may recognize the many blessings the poor and needy bring to us even as we seek to share our blessings with them. Open our hearts, Lord, To serve you with joy. That we may come to more fully realize that everything we have is a gift from God and we are called to generously share these gifts with all who are in need. Open our hearts, Lord, To serve you with joy. That we may learn to see ourselves as God s beloved children who have been called to work in God s kingdom and spread God s love throughout the world. Open our hearts, Lord, To serve you with joy.

That we may find more time to pray, to give thanks for all of God s blessings and ask for guidance in best using the gifts entrusted to our care. Open our hearts, Lord, To serve you with joy. That as we look upon the world, we may see the unseen, love the unlovable, and bind up the brokenhearted wherever we find them. Open our hearts, Lord, To serve you with joy. Bishop The people remain standing for The Peace Bishop People Loving God, we come to you in thanksgiving, knowing that all that we are and all that we have is gift from you. Speak your words into the depths of our souls, that we may hear you clearly. We offer to you this day all the facets of our lives, whether it be at home, at work, or at school to be patient, to be merciful, to be generous, to be holy. Give us the wisdom and insight to understand your will for us and the fervor to carry out our good intentions. We offer our gifts of time, talent and possessions to you as a true act of faith, to reflect our love for you and our neighbors. Help us to reach out to others as you our God have reached out to us. We ask these things in the name of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. The peace of Christ be always with you. And also with you. The Ministers and the People may greet one another in the name of the Lord. The Offertory Bishop Holy Communion Let us with gladness present the offerings and oblations of our life and labor to the Lord. Today s offering will be given to the Carl Knirk Memorial Scholarship Fund. Carl, a joyful saint of God, served as the Canon for Planned Giving and Stewardship in the Diocese of Olympia and was a long-standing member of the board of Directors for TENS. The fund will provide scholarships, at the recommendation of the Bishop, to assist people with the expenses associated with participating in disaster emergency response mission trips or to attend training workshops sponsored by TENS. Please make checks payable to TENS, indicating the Carl Knirk Memorial Scholarship Fund in the memo section. As the Offertory Anthem is sung, write your stewardship intentions on the sheet provided and place them in the offering plate. Offertory Anthem: The Gift From field and from vineyard, the fruits of the earth Are as sacraments given a wondrous new birth. So too are we changed in body and soul. O we are broken, and then we re made whole. By mystery summoned, by mystery fed. We partake of the holy in wine and in bread; And a marvelous gift we do now derive Where once we were lifeless, we are now alive. Ever present Spirit. O, Ancient of Days. O Word made Flesh, we stand here amazed By this gift freely given, this gift undeserved. Show us all how to serve you as we have been served. Jonathan & Deborah Hutchison 6

Send us out to the hungry bearing your bread. Let us carry the wine of new life to the dead; Gift-sharers, gift-bearers, to a world filled with pain. Bring us all home together to rejoice in your name. The people stand for Offertory Hymn 707 Traditional tune, Words by D. Hutchison Heartsounds 2000. Used by permission. Words: Francis Ridley Havargal (1836-1879), alt. Music: Hollingside, John Bacchus Dykes (1823-1876) The people remain standing for The Great Thanksgiving Bishop The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Bishop Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Bishop Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give our thanks and praise. 7

Bishop It is truly right, and good and joyful, to give you thanks, all-holy God, source of life and fountain of mercy. Therefore, joining with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every generation, we lift our voices with all creation as we sing: Music: American folk melody; arr. Marcia Pruner, harm. Annabel Morris Buchanan (1889-1983) 8

The people stand or kneel. The Bishop continues Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace. But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life. On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said: Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said: Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Bishop and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Bishop continues Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN. 9

The Bishop then continues As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, Music: McNeil Robinson II (b. 1943) The Breaking of the Bread A period of silence is kept. 10

Music: Jack Warren Burnam (b. 1946) The Bishop says So come to this table You who have much faith And you who would like to have more. You who have been to this Sacrament often, And you who have not been for a long time. You who have followed Jesus. And you who have failed. Come. It is Christ who invites you to meet him here. Wherever you are in your journey of faith, You are welcome here at the Lord s table. All baptized Christians are welcome to receive Holy Communion. Baptized children of all ages are included in this invitation. Those who are not baptized, or who do not wish to receive Communion, are welcome to come forward for a blessing, indicated by placing crossed hands on the chest. 11

The Postcommunion Prayer Bishop All The Blessing Bishop People Bishop People Bishop Let us pray. God of abundance, you have fed us with the bread of life and cup of salvation; you have united us with Christ and one another; and you have made us one with all your people in heaven and on earth. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue for ever in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen. Our help is in the name of the Lord; The maker of heaven and earth. Blessed be the Name of the Lord; From this time forth for evermore.
