Life s Reflections Lynn Patrice "Lynda" Davis Powell, born May 16, 1959, was the fourth child of Dorothy and Elijah Davis, and granddaughter of Bishop Theo Davis and Mother Freddie Davis and, Drucilla and Willie Davis all of whom preceded her in death. Her early education began in the Gary, Indiana public school system. The family moved to Jackson, Mississippi in the summer of 1971, where she completed her education at Jim Hill High School, thereafter she attended Jackson State University. At the tender age of 19, Lynn married her soul mate, James William Powell, Jr., and they are the proud parents of James William III, Johnathan Elijah Edward and Jalyn Patrick and a special daughter, Andreia Smith. She was eagerly looking forward to expanding the family with the upcoming nuptials of James III to Alandria West, and Johnathan to Shaunteia Zackery in March 2012 and becoming a grandparent to Alandria s daughter Amiyah Dameron. Lynn also provided love and spiritual guidance to god children: Raquel Hunt, Leah Martin, Celetha Hall, Tiffany Lewis, Santorius Wansley, Catherine Stampley and Bridgette Coats. As a licensed missionary in the Church of God in Christ her life was given to this calling. As a pastor s wife, she had the opportunity to set up the Woman s Department at the three churches founded by her husband in Mississippi, Michigan and Oklahoma. Lynn s love of God was manifest within every aspect of church ministry and her love for young people was evidenced through many years of working with youth. Having established with her husband, the New Life Youth Camp, she served as its Director for 10 years. This camp offered youth, ages 8-18, an opportunity to spend a week during the summer at one of Oklahoma s state parks. During camp the youth were involved in daily devotions, Christian rap sessions, art, crafts, sports and much more. It is through this camp that many youth came to Christ. She also served as Youth Director at her local church. Through her vision, various ministries were established: Couples Ministry; Singles Ministry Women s Ministry; Men s Ministry and others. Lynn had over 20 years banking experience, and served as a Banking Center Manager for the past five years, most recently with J P Morgan Chase. Her expertise in banking transferred over to the perfecting of financial ministry. She served as: First Assistant to the Supervisor of Women, Southeast Oklahoma Jurisdiction of the COGIC; President of the Pastors Wives Circle; Executive Board Chairman for the Women s Department; member of the Jurisdictional Trustee Board. Lynn had a love for ministry throughout the United States as well as abroad. She spread the word of Christ in many foreign lands such as South Africa, India and Korea. Through the ministry, she learned the necessity of having an effective prayer life founded on faith in God and a spirit of excellence. Lynn s theme for life was Lord, let my life be the mirror that reflects your image. Others left with cherished memories are: mother-n-law, Mother Margarette Powell (Grand Rapids, MI), siblings: C. My heart is filled with so many memories of what we have done together. I will spend the rest of my life remembering the times we have cried and laughed together. There were serious times and silly times that would keep the heart inspired. You are my heart and the joy of my life. You kept me young when I wanted to be old. Together, we have touched the lives of many people and you will never be forgotten. You will always be with me forever. It will never be goodbye but, just a time to reflect and remember that the power of love will last forever. Lynn, I Love You, James
My Champion You have the heart of a champion with the finesse of a queen Everyone knew it, it was widely seen. You exemplified with excellence what it means to be A woman of God, a sister, a friend, a first lady, a mother, a wife Every time you spoke to someone You gave them life. You taught us so much more than we could even retain Through us your legacy will live on and people will know your name Because of what you have taught us strongly we will always stand You're not just our mother but our CHAMPION!!! James, Johnathan, Jalyn (The Three Stooges) We Knew You for a Moment If tears could build a stairway and thoughts a memory lane We d walk right up to heaven, and bring you home again. No farewell words were spoken, No time to say good-bye You were gone before we knew it, and only God knows why. Our hearts still active in sadness and many tears still flow, What it meant to lose you, no one can ever know. But now we know you want us to mourn for you no more, To remember all the happy times, life still has much more in store. Since you ll never be forgotten, we pledge to you today A hollowed place within our hearts is where you ll always stay. But God knows why, with a chilling touch, why death gathers those we love so much, And what now seems so strange and dim, will all be clear when we meet Him. ~ Unknown Your Siblings, Denise, Kevin, Valerie, LeWanika and Kimberly
