(page 1) Peter Preaches WHAT S THE POINT? Forgiveness is a powerful tool. Too often, pride, hurt, fear or anger prevents us from freely forgiving. We tend to focus on ourselves and how we have been wronged. But, when we think about how much God has forgiven us through Christ, it helps us to forgive others. BIBLE CONNECTION Acts 2:5-41 (pages 1185-1187) CHARACTER WORD Forgiveness Treating someone as though he or she never hurt me TEACHING OBJECTIVE I can repent and receive forgiveness from sin. MEMORY LINK 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (KBC Study Bible pg. 1355) SUPPLIES NEEDED THIS WEEK GET CONNECTED Paper, pens MEMORY LINK ACTIVITY Option 1: Index cards Option 2: Jump ropes BIBLE CONNECTION Water bottle, large sponge SURF TEAM LEADER Memory Link cards, Hang 10 pages, index cards, pens MAKE-IT-STICK REVIEW GAME Option 1: Tape, bean bags, paper Option 2: Cones, ping pong balls God freely offers us forgiveness as a gift through Jesus Christ, but it wasn t free. God required a sacrifice to atone for sin because without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins (Hebrews 9:22b). This gift of forgiveness cost Jesus His life. In today s story, Peter preaches about forgiveness. He speaks of how God worked through the people of Israel to unfold His plan for His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross. This one-time sacrifice secured the necessary punishment for sin. Now, He freely offers forgiveness through Jesus to anyone who believes and repents. Today s lesson focuses on this free offer of forgiveness through Jesus. The most important decision that anyone can ever make is to repent and receive forgiveness from sin. GET CONNECTED Building relationships in Surf Teams; introducing today s lesson Paper, pens Worship Tip 10-15 Use the following conversation prompts to get to know the kids in your Surf Team and to introduce today s lesson. On a piece of paper, write FORGIVE horizontally. Instruct the clubbers to create a forgive acrostic by writing a word for each letter that describes that character word. Lead the kids in a discussion about the words they wrote. What does the word forgiveness mean? Why do you think it is hard to forgive others? How do you feel after you choose to forgive someone? How do you feel when someone else forgives you? Guide clubbers to locate and mark today s Bible Connection and Memory Link in their Bibles so they can find the pages quickly as directed in the session. When choosing the songs to lead at KBC, consider using songs that your church s children s ministry sings in the weekly programming or during VBS. Not only will your KBC worship leader have a resource to find songs, but some of your volunteers will be familiar with the songs. When KBC kids visit your church, they will know the songs and be able to join in worship.

MEMORY LINK Teaching a Bible verse to clubbers; helping them memorize the verse No supplies needed 10-15 Focus on the Bible Hold your Bible high in the air and ask the kids to do the same. Explain that today s memory link is in one of the 27 books in the New Testament. The Bible is God s message to us. It teaches us about Him and how He wants us to act toward Him and others. Today we will look at what the Bible says about forgiving. Guide kids to find page 1355 in their KBC Study Bibles. Our verse comes from the book of 1 John toward the end of the New Testament and is written by the Apostle John. He also wrote one of the Gospels (First four books of the NT). Can you guess which one? Focus on today s Memory Link What does it mean to forgive someone? (to treat someone as if he or she had never hurt me) Read 1 John 1:9 aloud. What does this verse say we must do to receive forgiveness? (confess our sins to God). To confess our sins means to tell God about the things that we do wrong. Point out the Mystery Solved section on page 1355. What does this verse say that God would do when we confess our sins to Him? (forgives us our sins and cleanses us from all unrighteousness). When we confess our sins to God, then He promises to forgive us and it s like we never sinned in the first place. (page 2) 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (KBC Study Bible pg. 1355) For the safety and security of everyone in your club, make sure your club ratio stays within 1 adult leader for every 10 clubbers. If you begin to approach the limit, work with your club leader and church leadership to add more volunteers to your team. Option 1 - BRING ME THAT VERSE Index cards Write 2-3 words from the verse in order on separate index cards. Guide Surf Teams to line up in relay rows. Place the verse cards in a pile about 10 feet away. On the signal, the first person in each row will race down, pick up a card, balance it on his index finger and return to the line, giving the card to the surf team leader. The runner will then tag the next person. When all the cards have been collected, the surf team leader will place them on the floor and the group can work to arrange them in correct order. The first team to complete the task is declared the winner. Option 2 - Verse Jump Jump ropes Stretch out the jump rope on the ground to form a line. Guide the clubbers to line up single file at one end of the rope. Kids will take turns jumping back and forth (like a skier) down the length of the rope. On each jump, kids will say a word of the memory link. For added competition, form several groups with an equal number of kids in each group. Place a jump rope on the ground for each group. See which group s players can jump down the rope reciting the verse the fastest.

BIBLE CONNECTION Teaching today s character word through gospel-centered Bible story 10-15 (page 3) Water bottle, large sponge Forgiveness Object Lesson Have you been at a table when someone accidentally spills their drink? (Pour water on the table.) Sometimes when that happens it runs down the table and gets on your food or on your clothes. To help us understand forgiveness today, let s let the spill represent something like name calling, teasing or pushing. How we respond to this wrongdoing or spill is our choice. We might splash the spill into the face of the one who has done wrong or get angry and upset. If we respond that way it s like trying to make that person pay for the wrong they have done. The other choice is to get out a sponge and quietly wipe up the mess without making the other person feel bad about hurting us. (Use the sponge to soak up the spilt water.) The sponge represents forgiveness-treating someone as if he or she never hurt you. When that person apologizes, we can show forgiveness. When that person does not acknowledge that they have done wrong, we can still forgive. When calling on kids to answer questions, don t always call on the first child who raises his hand. Kids need time to think about the answer. Wait a few seconds for several kids to raise a hand before choosing a student to share. For more teaching tips, see page 36 of your KBC Leadership Manual. Use the Bible Direct the kids to open their Bibles to Acts 2 (page 1185) and follow along as you tell the story. Explain that Acts is a book about things that happened after Jesus returned to heaven. Today s story is about something miraculous that happened to Jesus followers just after Jesus had gone to heaven. They were waiting in a special place like Jesus had commanded them. Peter was there with the others. The Holy Spirit came and gave them the ability to speak in other languages. Acts 2:5-13 Read Acts 2:5-6 (page 1185). It was truly amazing that after being filled with the Holy Spirit that this crowd representing different people groups and languages Galileans, Parthians, Medes, Elamites, Macedonians, Jews, etc. began speaking the great works of God in their own languages but everyone heard them in their own languages. Read Acts 2:12 (page 1185). Talk About It How do you feel after waking from a deep sleep or a weird dream? How you ever been confused by someone or something where your mind didn t realize what was happening? Perhaps that is the way the crowd felt and they began searching and trying to figure out what was happening. How was this possible? Acts 2:14-21 Peter raised his voice and began speaking to the large crowd gathered there in Jerusalem. He said that it was mid-morning and that what was happening was a fulfillment of a promise God had made a long time ago spoken by the Old Testament prophet, Joel. Read Acts 2:17-18. The coming of the Holy Spirit upon the people of God had been foretold a long time before this happened. Peter recognized the fulfillment of God s promise. Previously, the Spirit had come upon select individuals, but now the Holy Spirit came upon everyone who believed in Jesus.

Acts 2:22-37 Peter told the crowd of all the great things Jesus had done. Many in the crowd knew of the mighty works and wonders that God did through Jesus. Peter also spoke about the fact that Jesus had recently died on the cross and then he talked about how God had raised Jesus from the dead, something which had been widely rumored. (page 4) Peter reminded the people of another promise God made years ago to send a Savior. Peter explained that God kept His promise by sending Jesus, whom they crucified. The people were horrified as they realized what they had done to Jesus, God s promised Savior. They asked Peter what they should do. Acts 2:38-41 and Memory Link Connection Peter told the crowd they needed to repent of their sins and receive forgiveness through Jesus. Peter told the people the same thing today s memory link teaches. Guide the kids to recite 1 John 1:9 together. When you confess your sins and turn away from them, God promises to forgive your sin and take it away forever. The people responded to Peter s message by repenting, or turning away from, their sin and choosing to follow Jesus as their Savior and Lord. The Bible says about 3000 decided to follow Jesus and be baptized to show their repentance and faith in Him. Gospel Connection Draw kids attention to the word repent in Acts 2:38. Repent is a word that people don t use much today. It means to turn away from something and turn toward something else. Demonstrate repentance by walking one direction, then turn and walk the opposite direction. Help the kids understand that following Jesus means to stop going your own way, repent and turn toward Jesus and start going God s way instead. When you repent and turn away from your sin, then you are positioned to receive the forgiveness that God offers through Jesus. That s the message of forgiveness that Peter shared and it s the same message of hope I am sharing with you today. Today, you can choose to receive God s forgiveness when you repent and place your trust in Jesus. Invite children wanting to know more about becoming a Christian to move to the designated area to meet with a leader one-on-one. Application/Transition God wants us to forgive others when they wrong us. He also wants to forgive us when we come to Him humbly. Have you made Jesus your forever friend? God stands ready to forgive you when you come to Him confessing your sins. Gospel Tip We rely on the Holy Spirit to guide us as we explain the forgiveness found in the gospel. The child must accept the forgiveness that Jesus offers as the only way to a relationship with the Father. God is faithful and dependable, and He will continue drawing the child to Himself until that child fully understands His offer of forgiveness. It is important for us as leaders to not rush a child s response to the gospel. Our job is simply to tell the message of the gospel and to pray that our children will understand.

SURF TEAM TIME Connecting with kids in small groups; applying today s Bible Connection and Character Word 5-10 (page 5) Memory Link cards, Hang 10 pages, index cards, pens Gospel Connection Before you begin, ask if there are any clubbers who would like to talk with the Bible Connection Leader about praying to ask Jesus to become their Forever Friend. If so, let them go to the designated area. Today s Lesson What questions do you have about today s story? What did Peter have to say about forgiveness? How does a person receive forgiveness from God? Why do you need God s forgiveness? What does it mean to repent? Pray Give each kid an index card and a pen. Encourage them to write a prayer request on the card. Ask volunteers to share what they wrote on their cards. Lead the kids in prayer. Find ways to connect with the kids outside of KBC. Send encouraging notes to their home. Email parents something interesting their child did at the club meeting that week. Go the extra mile by finding additional ways to volunteer at the school, such as reading in their classes. These kinds of connection go a long way to impact the kids you minister to at KiDs Beach Club. Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus to die for my sins. Thank You that through Jesus You forgive me the things I do wrong. Amen. Use the Bible Give each child a memory link card. Review today s memory link and character word. Guide kids to use cards to mark today s story in their KBC Study Bibles. Lead them to highlight today s memory link. Hang 10 Pages Give each child a Hang 10 page. Challenge kids to hang out with God 10 minutes each day by praying and reading the Bible, using the Hang 10 page as a guide. Encourage kids to bring back their Hang 10 pages next week. Let s look at Day 2. Turn to Acts 3:1-10 on page 1188. When you read this passage this week you will learn about a man who could not walk. He received healing and forgiveness. He was changed when he learned about Jesus. He was filled with joy and peace. Who would like to read and say the prayer for that day?

MAKE IT STICK - REVIEW GAME Playing a game to review today s Bible Connection and Character Word Option 1 - TIC TAC TOSS Tape, bean bags, paper Prepare Make a tic-tac-toe grid on the floor large enough to place one paper sheet in each square. Divide your surf team into two teams or play one surf team against another. Give each team five sheets of paper in the same color. The first person from the first team tosses a beanbag trying to land the beanbag in a square. If they answer the review question correctly, they may put one of their papers in that square, claiming that square for the rest of the round. If they can t answer the question, offer the opposing team an opportunity to toss the beanbag and claim a square. Play until one team claims three squares in a row. If the beanbag lands outside the playing area or on a square occupied by their opponent their turn is over. Option 2 - PING PONG BALL RELAY Cones, ping-pong balls 5-10 (page 6) Your goal as the review game leader is more than simply playing a fun game. The goal is to reinforce the lesson and review the story. Be sure to listen carefully to the Bible connection leader during the lesson. Sometimes God takes the story in a different direction and not all the questions on the page are covered. Try to avoid asking questions that were not included in the story. For a relay race, direct each group to form a single file line several feet away from the cones. Explain that players will answer a review question, drop to hands and knees, and blow a ping-pong ball around the cone and back. The next player will repeat and so on until everyone has a turn. The first team to complete the relay wins. REVIEW QUESTIONS 1. What is today s character word? (Forgiveness) 2. What does forgiveness mean? (To treat someone like he or she never hurt me) 3.
