From The East My dear brethren, As most of you must have heard by now, the institution of Freemasonry has been declared illegal in the United States. Therefore, as we have sworn to uphold the laws of our nation, the North Hollywood Masonic Lodge will be disbanding on the fi rst day of April. Masonry has enjoyed a long and distinguished history in America, and in some ways the history of Freemasonry in America parallels the history of America itself. I m regretful that we are now seen as a danger to the security of this great nation, and I can only hope that someday Masonry may return to its shores. I trust that you will continue to hold the lessons of Freemasonry safely within the receptacles of your faithful breasts. Brotherly love, relief, truth; temperance, fortitude, prudence, and justice; faith, hope, and charity -- these should be your guideposts through life as you strive to circumscribe your desires and keep your passions within due bounds toward all mankind. If you should ever meet a friend (especially a former brother) in distress, it will still be your duty to aid him as much as you can without putting yourself in danger. We are still bound by an indissoluble chain of affection, no matter that we as an organization have ceased to exist. Take care, brothers. Be good men, even though we are no longer permitted to be good Masons. From the Oriental Chair (for the last time), Steve Barr Master (3) From The Editor The current humor of this issue has been a creation solely of the current Worshipful Master S. Barr. The views of this humor, and the intended outcome to stir emotions is something that I do not warrant and or condone. This issue will echo within the historical documents for years if not decades to come as each printed trestle board becomes yet another piece of history of our lodge, that in times yet determined by future events, one will not know the ramifi cations that this issue may have/have not sparked, but I feel there are better ways to get the same point across. Some feel, that the missing Brothers & Worshipful who ve not graced our lodge, in over ten years (if not more) that this trestle board would spark some emotion, to get them to re-visit their blue lodge that they were raised at. For those of you who are reading this, and have not contacted your blue lodge, in such a manner that you can t remember, here are the ways you can contact your blue lodge: North Hollywood Masonic Lodge F. & A.M. #542 5122 Tujunga Avenue North Hollywood, California 91601 Tel: (818) 755-9304 - Fax: (818) 487.9802 nohomasonic@aol.com www.lodge542.com Please let us know you re out there, you re ok, and you remember us. A History Lesson From The South April Fools Day, sometimes called All Fools Day, is one of the most light hearted days of the year. Its origins are uncertain. Some see it as a celebration related to the turn of the seasons, while others believe it stems from the adoption of a new calendar. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII ordered a new calendar (the Gregorian Calendar) to replace the old Julian Calendar. The new calendar called for New Year s Day to be celebrated Jan. 1. That year, France adopted the reformed calendar and shifted New Year s day to Jan. 1. According to a popular explanation, many people either refused to accept the new date, or did not learn about it, and continued to celebrate New Year s Day on April 1. Other people began to make fun of these traditionalists, sending them on fool s errands or trying to trick them into believing something false. Eventually, the practice spread throughout Europe. The French call April 1 Poisson d Avril, or April Fish. French children sometimes tape a picture of a fish on the back of their schoolmates, crying Poisson d Avril when the prank is discovered. Greetings Brethren, From the Secretary Brethren, The Master s Page I am very happy to inform you that since my last note to you, many of the Brethren that are members of North Hollywood Lodge No. 542, that had temporarily put aside their dues payment, have come forth and have remembered their commitment to the Lodge to assist in the fi nancial responsibilities of their membership. This Lodge is one of the very important satellite links within this state, which is a very intricate part of the international world wide internet and trade unions of the world, having communications with almost every country on this planet. It was a great day when you became a member, and it is a great day when we receive your presence within and communications to this world wide internet link, which we refer to as The Lodge. For those few who are still without that Current Internet Server Card, please accept and hear that small voice, from the secretary, that comes to all Brethren that listen to and heed good council when it is communicated, please communicate with the Lodge with your remittance, or let us know of your current status, if assistance is needed. If you have read this far within the letters and words of this note, then you will wonder why the Master, Steven Barr, has suspended and cancelled all future lodge stated meetings and temple board association meetings, until further notice. This last sentence and piece of information is at the will and pleasure of the Worshipful Master, Steven Barr. Until we meet again in person, or at our world wide web site, Fraternally, Bruce E. Hudson, PM, Secretary, www.lodge542.com In case you haven t fi gured it out by now, this has been an April s Fool issue of the Hour Glass. Freemasonry is alive and well (and still legal), and North Hollywood Masonic Lodge is in no danger of shutting down. This April Fool gag was created without any spite, and I hope no one is offended. It was entirely my idea and my responsibility, and so please don t blame anyone else if your feelings were hurt. As always, I welcome your calls. On the other hand, for those who felt some sense of grief at the idea of the lodge not existing anymore, I m sure you ll be glad to realize that everything is okay. We re still here, and you re welcome to come join in our activities and camaraderie. I hope this issue has revealed to a few of you that Freemasonry means more to you than you thought it did. Take care, my brothers. I ll see you at the lodge. Sincerely, Steve Barrr Master (12)
