STEWARDSHIP. Well, hello again. It s the Bat in the Belfry here. I mentioned last week that I was going to share some of St. Pope John Paul IIs favorite homilies. The first I ve chosen is about vocations vocations in the lay state. St. Pope John Paul relates a statement made by the synodal Fathers of the Church who have noted, The Holy Spirit generates other forms of self-giving to which people who remain fully in the lay state can devote themselves. St. Francis de Sales spoke also of devotion or a life according to the Spirit. The sainted Pope equates that what is valid for spiritual vocations is also valid for the infinite ways in which all the members of the Church are laborers in the vineyard of the Lord. Each one of us has a unique and singular personal history and is called by name to bring his or her own contribution to the coming of the Kingdom of God. No talent, no matter how small, is to be hidden or left unutilized. The Pope stated that the Apostle Peter gave a stern warning: As each has received a gift, employ it for one another, as good stewards of God s varied grace. I didn t think of serving the Church as a vocation until I read these words, but it does make sense. Although as lay parishioners we have not taken the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience as a religious has, we have vowed through our acceptance of the sacraments to support and further the work of the Church. Think of the way in which you currently are practicing your vocation. Are you acting in a spiritual manner to support the work of your parish? As we continue to celebrate the Easter season, this is a good time to examine the Spirit within us to be sure we are utilizing our talents to the fullest and not wasting what has been implanted within us.
