The Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time 2 October 2011 Saint Luke Church, Whitestone, New York FROM THE DESK OF MSGR. TOSI --- I came so that all might have life and have it to the full. Today - October 2nd - is Respect Life Sunday. Each year the first Sunday in October is designated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops as a day especially dedicated to promote an ever deepening awareness of the respect and dignity of all human life. The theme for this year s Respect Life Sunday is taken from the very words of Jesus - I came so that all might have life and have it to the full. With these words the church proclaims the sacredness of all human life from conception to natural death in the face of ever growing threats to human life. Yet as Christians we must witness to the value of human life as a gift of almighty God, our loving Father. Our witness must be not only of words but of actions - actions that not only protest the culture of death but show forth our concern, love and protection for all human life. Each year people dedicated to life gather to witness to life and pray for the end of abortion in the March for Life in Washington, D.C. This year the March for Life will take place on January 23, 2012. Yet our witness to life must not be just a one day event. The witness to life must occupy our attention and guide our actions every day. It can be as simple as treating each other with respect and kindness; acting without violence or bullying; listening to the elderly; visiting the sick; caring for the needs of others or supporting someone faced with a difficult pregnancy. Respect for life can witness by working for a culture of life; lobbying for laws that support life! The list of actions is endless. And of course we can pray - a very powerful action that fosters life and can change hearts and minds to turn from death to life! October is the month of the Holy Rosary. Let us pray to our Blessed Mother for a true respect and love for Life. For her son Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. By his death and resurrection Jesus has given us divine life - eternal life! God bless. Let us pray for one another, FEAST OF SAINT LUKE --- Join us for Mass in honor of our patron Saint Luke on Tuesday, October 18th at 7:30pm. Refreshments will follow in the school hall. All are welcome! Page 1

MISSION STATEMENT As a community of believers in Jesus Christ and in Communion with the universal church, we strive to follow the Lord s command to love God and one another. Rooted in word and sacrament, we grow together as a Eucharistic community inviting all to the Good News of Jesus. MASS BOOK 2012 --- The Mass Book for 2012 will open on Wednesday, October 26. Announced Masses will be available from 9:00am until 5:00pm. There is a limit of 5 Masses per family. The offering for each Mass is $15 which may be paid for by check or cash. In order to make things run more smoothly, please remember to bring the exact amount for the number of Masses you wish to arrange. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. ************************************ REFLECTION ON THE ROMAN MISSAL --- A workshop for all Liturgical Ministers and Religious Education Catechists will be presented by Msgr. Tosi on Saturday, October 22nd from 9:30am until 1:00pm in the School Hall. All are encouraged to attend this valuable session. ************************************ DID YOU KNOW? That every Sunday Msgr. Tosi celebrates a Mass for the parishioners of the parish. Known as the Pro Popolo Mass or Mass for the people this weekly Mass is an obligation - a joyful one at that - required by the church of all pastors/administrators. However, Msgr. Tosi remembers the people of the parish in his prayers especially at Mass every day. Yet each Sunday his Mass is celebrated with the intention for the people of the parish. SPECIAL DAY OF PRAYER --- The feast of Saint Francis of Assisi - October 4 - has been set aside as a Diocesan Day of Prayer to ask God s blessings and guidance as we move forward with the strategic planning process in order to strengthen and build up the Catholic church in Brooklyn and Queens. In observance of the Day of Prayer, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will be observed here in the church from after the 8:30am Mass until 5:00pm. All our parishioners are asked to set aside some time for prayer this day as the Diocese seeks God s assistance. The usual Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on the first Friday of October - October 7th will NOT take place. Please note this change to our regular schedule. *********************************** WE HAVE A PROBLEM --- with the continued use of the lower church meeting area. Due to water leaks in this area certain sections of the walls are soaked causing a dangerous condition with the electrical wiring. We have had two incidents which could have resulted in fire. With the assistance of an electrician we are trying to determine the best course of action. However, until we can ensure the safety of the lower church, use of this area will no longer be possible. While this may cause some inconvenience and rearrangement of meeting place I m sure you can understand the importance of this action. As always your cooperation is so greatly appreciated. Msgr. Tosi Page 2
