At 8 PM the meetng starts, as t does n most of the other 2,53 precncts throughout the state of owa. 'Me presdental selecton process for 198 has just begun. There s a town meetng or caucus, one Democratc and one Republcan n each of the 2,531 precncts throughout the state of owa. For those of you who have braved the second floor of the Stony Brook Unon on a Wednesday nght, can descrbe the caucus as salar to a Poty Senate meetng. n a caucus anythng can happen. Anyone who wants to has a chance to stand up and speak on any topc. Majorty rles, bckerng and argung are normal. There are three man tems to be taken care of at a Republcan caucus; a presdental preference straw pole, the choosng of delegates, and the dscussdon of platform resolutons. n ths caucus, drected by WendeN Harmes, the precnct charman, the ground nrles were establshed frst Every caucus has the rght to establsh ts own nrles. Ths one decded to use the straw podl to detemne the cfvson of the seven delegates that t s enttled to. n other precncts, the caucus can have a wnnertakeall system f t chooses. The number of delegates from a precnct s proportonal to the number of people who voted n the prevous electon. Charman Harmes sad he was m surprsed" by the large turnout, addng that '25 percent of the Republcans n the precnct are probably present." As a result, there was standng room only. The precnct charman of the last preadental caucus, who declned to be dentfed, was amazed at the turnout. She descrbed the caucus four years ago as one that less than twenty people attended" and everyone knew each other. She, as most others, credted the large turnout to the meda coverage. Weather was another factor that helped the turnout, t was 3 degrees and dear at the start of the caucus. Last year at ths tme, Des Mones was dggng out from a foot of snow wth the temperature at nnus 2 degrees and wnd chlds at mnus 7. The mld January weather, unusual n owa, helped people attend the caucus. At 8:3 PM the ballot s were dstrbuted to those present, and 134 people voted. The results were tabulated n approxmately 2 mnutes. Durng that tme, communty members got up to stump for canddates they supported for the U.S. Senate and other offces. The mood became heated as some caucus members questoned the speakers on the canddates they supported and arguments developed. The rules adopted before the straw pol gave a delegate for every 14 percent of the caucus vote. The results showed Bush wth 48.5%, at least three delegates; Reagan wth 19%, probably one delegate; Baker wth 13.4%, obvously gettng one delegate, and Anderson wth 8.2%, probably gettng one delegate. The other canddates scattered the remanng votes amongst themselves. Onedelegatewasletover, but Bush forces, the strongest present, dd not have the majorty to dam the fnal delegate. At the tme, the evenng's major arguments occurred, uang 45 mnutes and four votes. Ths occurred when a Reagan supporter motoned to strp Anderson of hs delegate and to gve one each of the two remanng delegates to Reagan and Bush. Ths was aganst the ground rules set at the bennng of the caucus, but n a caucus majorty rules and anythng goes. The Reagan and Bush people joned forces to ralroad ths moton through. Despte the complants of the others present, the moton went through and was accepted by the char. One Anderson supporter clamed that ths was not far snce the rules were not followed. ne person should have realzed that ths was not an exercse of farness, t wax poltcs. The 68th prednct Republcan caucus sent four delegates for George Bush. two for Ronald Reagan and one for Howard Baker to the county conventon for Polk Comty. At the county conventon, delegates wll be chosen to the state conventon. The state conventon wll fnally choose the 37 delegates that owa sends to the Republcan Natonal Conventon n Detrot July 14. Makng hs flm debut as both star and coauthor, Steve Martn tntllates the audence wth hs wacky brand of humor. Aded by drector Carl Rener, Martn performs the knd of physcal comedy that s a drect throwback to the old Jerry Lews moves of the 5's and the 6's. As one vews the flm, the deft touch of Rener s easly evdent. Wth Martn portrayng the role of a whte son of a black sharecropper's famly, who doesn't realze that he s adopted, Rener brngs to the bg screen the knd of n nyttuu ana stage acts. nus he turned some of hs earler flms no a seres of wld and sometmes unrelated events and gags. The same holds true for Martn. Much of the materal for The Jerk came from Martn's nghtclub and stage acts. Hs penchant for corny cat jokes are a prme example of ths. n the flm, after hs character becomes rch and famous, Martn was preyed upon by varous charty organzatons. One was an organzaton to stop cat jugglng south of the border. After seeng a short documentary flm on ths, Martn naturally gave generously to the charty. C nemagraphcally, no new ground was OroKen n ths flm. u Steve Martn vehlc we. He s onscreen rector Rener presented The Jerk n a rather straghtforward and smplfed method of shootng. But n a comedy, such as ths, t s the actons of the characters that are the central focal ponts. Trck or nnovatve camera angles are not of prme mportance. As Martn's onscreen (as well as offscreen) grl frend, Bernadette Peters, presents herself n a lkeable manner. (n ths revew, however, only her onscreen role wll be dscussed.) Bascally Peters, actng as a fol for Martn's romantc endeavors, has a fne touch for lght comedy. Bascally, though, The Jerk, s a 'Electrc Horseman' Lghts Up almost the whole tme and most of the supportng performers are just that: supportng. Hardly anyone, outsde of Peters, has a substantal part. But some were notceable. n a mnor role as Martn's S&M mstress, Catl n Adams rases raunchness to a new level. She scores remarkably well n a totally revoltng part. There are some crcles of culture where the thought of enjoyng a good slapstck move would be unheard of. But f you enjoy laughng endlessly at some of the funnest lnes and gags of the season, then Steve Martn n The Jerk s just for you. But ths group s one whch has seemngly been able to keep ther own sngular dentty whle at the same tme takng on and masterng dfferent styles of the musc world wthout gettng confused or lost n the shuffle. Perhaps t s ther wtty sense of humor n ther wrtng that keeps each cut new and nterestng. Ths album s smply a collecton of ther greatest hts. So f you have most of ther albums, you won't need t. Even f such passages are genunely movng, as they undoubtedly were for many n the audence, they remnd one of the "unearned exultaton" whch the Amercan composer Charles (ves heard n so much musc of Tchakovsky's tme. The emotonal effects are produced too easly and then dragged out at nordnate length. Ths s not to dmnsh the achevement of the performers, who tackled ths endlessly dffcult pece brllantly, and wth convcton. (Harrell was clearly trng at the end; but that was to be expected.) The two strng players fnally had a chance n ths pece to dsplay ther most lugubrous romantc sobs and tears, Ashkenazy conveyed the dea, at least, of some astonshng vrtuosty, and the work had ts ntended effect on the audence. Ton Brown has that same talent for combnng lyrcs and musc and she puts a song across wth a smtar lltng voce. Barbara Becker Wee's Greatest Hts 19721978 (Polydor) Ths album s a collecton of some very fne rocknroll. t's a collecton of hts produced by the band n those sx years and t dsplayed ther versatlty and defnte style. And ndeed ths group s very versatle. They move from tunes lke "Donna" an early 6s soundng ballad to "Slly Love" an almost New Wave soundng tune, all the whle dsplayng the group's good natured humor as welt as ther ablty to play dfferent types of tunes Pearl Harbor and the Explosons (Wamer Bros.) Pearl Harbor and the Explosons Pearl Harbor and the Explosons s bascally lght punk rock. There are some ntrgung muscal hghlghts contaned n ths album, but there are also many nexcusable flaws. The bggest problem revolves around the vocals whch are weak and bured n the producton. "So Much for Love" features an outoftune lead vocal that grates aganst the nerves. There are no memorable melodes here, and there s no emotonal delvery to save the lack of melody. The fnal result s boredom. Perhaps the lyrcs could have saved many of these tunes, but alas, they too are borng and mmature. A prme example would be the repettous phrases n "Shut up and Dance." The song evokes memores of the Monkees, only ths rendton s done n heavy metal. On the brghter sde. Pearl Harbor and the Explosons have an excellent muscal backbone. Adventures n Utopa (Warner Bros.) Utopa Although much can be sad n favor of Todd Rundgren, hs musc ncessantly lacks substance and feelng. Rundgren, although qute a capable muscan, songwrter and producton genus, manfests n hs work a pretentous character. Utopa, the band Rundgren has been playng wth for several years s competent wthout drawng any specal attenton to t. Roger Powell, Kasm Sulton and John Wlcox are the members of Utopa. t seems Rundgren has gven Utopa an ncreased credt n the makng of hs latest creaton. Adventures n Utopa. All musc s wrtten exclusvely by Utopa, although t s obvous that Rundgren's nfluence was domnant. Adventures n Utopa, s a soundtrack for a Utopa vdeotape. t»s musc only dehard Rundgren fans wll appreacate; nspd lyrcs, unfocused melodes mxed wth tght, electronc nstrumentals. t s also apparent that Rundgren has been somewhat persuaded by the New Wave scene as hs mus c on Adventures n Utopa, reflects ths. Adventures n Utopa, s a bengn album whch does lttle harm and nspres even less. Hancock n 1978, Chck Corea and Herbe Hancock, two of the fnest jazz pansts today, embarked on a seres of concerts that greatly mpressed the musc world. Both muscans, however formdable, were reared n the hgh technology age of electronc musc. Perhaps, that s why ths album s so refreshng; only a set of Stenways separate the audence from the musc. The playng s exqustely clean and superb; modern jazz at ts best. t s apparent, that the pano wzardry of Corea slghtly outweghs Hancock's more dgnfed approach, t would be false, however, to label the concerts as a competton between the two men. The catchphrase duel, states Tony Cohan n the lner, "No term could more dstort the qualty of the experence created by these two remarkable artsts..." There are some brllant hghlghts found on ths album. Ths semester the Senate Commttee on the Handcapped shall begn holdng ts meetngs to work out the problems that are often shared by both the non handcapped and handcapped alke on campus. These problems nclude nadequate lghtng, ramps and ralngs, and an overabundance of mud paths on campus, to menton but a few. Butterklee Ths past New Year's Eve, whle the rest of us were partyng the nght away, a strange and exctng story began to unfold. t seems that at the Cleveland Medcal Center, a crack team of doctors managed to brng back to lfe a man presumed to have been dead. But what was so unusual was that he had been presumed dead for two weeks. For the frst tme n medcal hstory, doctors brought back to lfe a man who not only was declared legally dead but was gven a proper bural too. On December 19th, Oscar Drydock drove hs car off the road and nto a brck wall. He was pronounced dead on arrval at the hosptal. Yet, for some unanswered reason two weeks later doctors, from the Cleveland Medcal Center, obtanea a court order to exhume the body. Followng that they mmedately gave Mr. Drydock an emergency enema to (n hs doctor's own words) "get hm up and runnng agan.' That has got to be the strongest enema ever admnstered. But the story doesn't end here. Mr. Drydock, sensng hs new found fame has decded to cash n on t wth a seres of wellpad ntervews and a soontobe publshed book. was lucky enough to be there for hs frst ntervew. On the way to the developmental track meet at Farmngdale College January 21, the van, borrowed by the Stony Brook Track Team from the Unversty, began to gve them trouble. One of the wheels was loose and t was deemed too dangerous to travel any further. So, the squad was forced to travel the second leg of ther journey by tax. When they reached ther destnaton, they warmed up to compete n the frst meet of the 198s. "We were all very rusty,"' sad Paul Cabot, the team's captan who runs the mle and anchor poston n the mle relay. "A developmental meet s just lke a practce except they gve out rbbons at ths meet. t's the frst tme ddn't get a rbbon1 got blsters nstead." The Patrots dd brng home one rbbon Monday evenng. Andy Nelkn jumped over sx feet n the hgh jump competton to take second place. "Ths was a bad floor; you need a floor that gves somethng back" sad Nelkn. "' had a good sprng, but ths s far from my personal best." Rcky Kng, the sprnter who was njured n the fnal meet of last semester, was back and runnng Monday evenng. He's recovered enough to run the 6yard dash but he needs tme to get back nto shape. "'m feelng pretty good, but f push t or stretch t too hard, my leg stll hurts," sad Kng. Stony Brook basketball has been around qute a whle and the Patrots' rch tradton s drawn almost entrely from the past decade. There were some dark moments for Stony Brook n the 197s, but the brllance created by four Knckerbocker Conference Champonshps, four NCAA East Regonal Playoff bds and four consecutve NCAA team feld goal shootng percentage ttles easly overshadowed the nfrequent gloomy moments. The decade began wth Rolle Massmno as the Patrots' head basketball coach and, wth the team sparked by the late Mke Kerr and Bll Myrck, Stony Brook fnshed the 19697 regular season wth an 184 record and the Unversty's frst Knckerbocker Conference Champonshp. n addton, Stony Brook accepted a bd to compete n the 197 NCAA East Regonal Playoffs at Buffalo State. Wth an average heght of only 6'", the scrappy Pats went down to defeat twce and fnshed fourth n ther frst postseason tournament. Massmno's second year at the helm was 19771 and evdently, the 151 record the squad produced was good enough to land the ambtous Massmno the coveted head coachng poston at Dvson Vllanova Unversty. The followng campagn saw Don Covelesk take over the head coachng dutes and durng hs threeyear tenure, the Patrots took an upanddown rde on a rollercoaster. Unyeldng Dscplnary Code Despte the presence of 6'9" Dave Sten and Captan Paul Munck, who later moved on to become Madson Square Garden's Drector of Amateur Athletcs, a cumulatve record of 3831 precptated,covelesk's release. 197475 marked the arrval of a new head basketball coach for the Patrots, who would be at the center of controversy and success over the next four unforgettable years. There are some who beleve that Ron Bash altered the destny of Stony Brook basketball forever. And yet, there are stll some who beleve that Bash's unyeldng dscplnary code and machnelke manner rreversbly damaged the careers of a handful of promsng athletes. Nevertheless, t's hard to argue wth success, and after "The Great Boycott and Suspenson Year" of '74'75, Bash led the Pats to a 1511 record n '75'76, and unveled a contngent of freshmen players so talented, that by the tme of ther graduaton, every sngle ndvdual and team record would be thers. From Long sland Cty Hgh School, Bash recruted Larry Tllery and Wayne Wrght to jon Earl Keth n formng the powerful Long sland Cty Connecton. Forwards Jon Adderley and Dwght Johnson came from the Bronx and added much needed bulk and depth. Together ths unt would ntate the begnnng of a new era for Stony Brook basketball n 197677. A 216 record secured a berth n the 1977 NCAA East Regonal Playoffs and produced the Patrots' second Knck Conference ttle. After losng 7165 to Oneonta n the openng round of the East Regonal tournament, Stony Brook grabbed thrdplace honors wth a 7463 vctory over thaca and headed home from Albany wth the confdent realzaton that the '77'78 campagn would be a whole lot better. The Long sland Cty Connecton members were junors by now and supplemented by Mel Walker and sold reserves lke Tom Durant and Joe Grandolfo, the Patrots won ther frst 18 games of the season en route to a spectacular 274 mark.
