President: Happy Fall Y all! As I write this article, fall is not officially here, but by the time you will be reading this, it will be in all its glory! I love all the seasons but fall is a wonderful time to see the beauty of God s creation around us. I have just returned from the Conference Annual Celebration at Lake Junaluska, one of those beautiful creations. At the celebration, our district received 11 recognitions out of 13 possible. So many people came up to me and congratulated me on this impressive acknowledgement of our district s efforts for mission. I was quick to say that it was all because of what you, our local members, are doing in your units. This district was not attempting to be in the spotlight we were just following our goal of putting, Faith, Hope and Love in Action. Your efforts are appreciated and what we do makes a real difference in the lives of women, children, and youth. Remember our goal to bring schoolbag kits to Annual Celebration? Combined with all eight districts, there were almost 1600 school kits donated. Several other UMCOR kits were also included, bringing the combined value of donated items to a little more than $28,000.00! That is what makes United Methodist Women so impressive. Working together we can bring positive changes to the world in which we live. Our own district annual meeting in August was a great event too. The message brought to us by Rev. Suzanne Michael was a blessing and the business and worship services were inspiring. Thanks to Pine Grove UMW for acting as our host church and to their missional network for the wonderful refreshments. But, we aren t finished yet! Ubuntu Day will be held at the Bethlehem Center on Saturday, October 15. Register online for this day of service to one of our national mission institutions right here in our own district. Make plans to attend our leadership development day at Ardmore UMC on October 22 where we will be learning about the position you have been called to fulfill. And we have our annual Walk for Mission on November 5. Look for more information about all these events elsewhere in this newsletter. Our district s success is a testament to our strong belief that God has called us to be the hands and feet of Jesus here in Yadkin Valley. I am so proud of you and this district for living out our faith on a daily basis! Darlene 2

Leadership Development: Mary Jo Brewer Greetings to all Yadkin Valley District United Methodist Women! You are all invited to attend the Yadkin Valley District Leadership Development/Officer Training Event Saturday, October 22, 2016, 9:00 a.m. 12:00 noon. It will be at Ardmore UMC, 630 S. Hawthorne Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 (near Baptist Hospital). The theme for this event is Passing It On. We will gather in the Bob Martin Fellowship Hall for a continental breakfast (no charge) and fellowship with each other. Deborah Forrest, Bethlehem Center Director, will update us on the programs at the Center. We will divide into groups for the officer training and we will be finished by noon. Training will be for all officers and program area coordinators. The Hands on Project will be for Bethlehem Center and Undesignated Giving. Bethlehem Center can use any school supplies for preschool and elementary school ages, including play-doh, craft supplies, glue, construction paper and markers. Please come and enjoy visiting with other UMW members from our district and get information/ materials for your office or program area. You can come, even if you are not an officer or program area coordinator, and go to any group you wish. The Program Resources room will have lots of books and you may find some good books that you would like to read. I m sure that you will enjoy hearing from Deborah Forrest about Bethlehem Center. I look forward to seeing you Saturday, October 22 at Ardmore UMC. Love and Peace to All Mary Jo Nominations Chair: Sharon Reid God has answered our prayers with two wonderful women to complete our positions for the nominations Committee at this time. All new district officers will be listed in the first newsletter of 2017. We truly appreciate our prayers and help with the selection of our new officers. We will need more names next year so please continue to encourage others to join us on our UMW District Team. I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart Psalm 9:1A Sharon 3

Hello to all my YVD UMW Social Action: Vickie Morrison Yadkin Valley District Newsletter I am writing my last article as the Social Action Coordinator. Everything is only for a season and my what a season it has been. I have been blessed beyond measure! I have been thrilled to meet so many of our local unit members. My GPS and Google maps have certainly gotten a workout over the past 4 years. I have had the opportunity to travel and represent our district in Chicago and New York. I have been saddened, discouraged, enlightened and strengthened by all that I have learned about social injustices. I am grateful for the United Methodist Women being an organization that stands up for rights of the marginalized and disenfranchised all over the world. Thank you so much for all of your support and for allowing me to be of service. As we head into the next year I encourage each local unit to choose an issue or two and make them a priority for the year. Review the books on the Reading program list to learn about the issues we are facing. Visit our web page and click on Social Action. Learn all that you can and then organize for action. These are the four areas that we are concentrating on through 2020. * Economic Inequality * Climate Justice * Criminalization of Communities of Color * Maternal and Child Health Let us remember the Matthew 25:40 as we move forward in service: And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Yours in Christ Vickie P.S. Don t forget Leadership Development /Officer Training on October 22, 2016. 4

Treasurer-Jamie Smith UMW Sisters! I was glad to see many of you at our District Annual Meeting and/or at our Conference Annual Celebration! I think both events were the best yet! Yadkin Valley UMW rock as noted in the Conference reports where we were at the top in several categories. Again Western North Carolina was top in giving across the Nation in 2015! May we continue to work for missions and be the most supportive we can be for women, children and youth fulfilling the UMW Promise. As we are beginning 4 th quarter and the end of our 2016 year, may we push harder, continue to send in your pledges and gifts to mission so we can meet our goal another year! If you need Gift to Mission or Gift in Memory cards please let me know. Remember to submit $5 per card for the GTM cards and any amount of $5 or more for the GIM cards when you honor someone who has passed. Don t forget your World Thank Offering, the Walk to Mission monies, and other giving you ve not sent in, along with the remainder of your Pledge amount for 2016. I know with all of us working together we can continue to be at the top in our giving! Hebrews 4:16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in the time of need. I m looking forward to seeing you at the Leader Training on October 22, we can help each other! And let us continue to pray for each other! Jamie PLEDGES Secretary: Cathy Smith We recently elected and installed our Yadkin Valley District UMW officers for 2017. Many of our local units are electing officers for the coming year. Vice President: Martha Isenberg Yadkin Valley District Newsletter What a wonderful Yadkin Valley District Annual Meeting we had in August! At the business session we were able to conduct necessary business efficiently and elect and install officers for 2017. It was heart warming to see so many units be recognized for their accomplishments during the recognition part of the program. As a result, our district also received 11 recognitions at the Conference Annual Meeting at Lake Junaluska. Our guest speaker for worship, Rev. Suzanne Michael of New Hope UMC, shared an inspirational message Growing in Blessedness---Thrive! She helped us realize the tremendous impact UMW can have on young women, as it led her into the ministry. Let s continue to aim to extend blessedness to all through our work with UMW. A special thanks goes to the ladies of Pine Grove UMW for hosting this event with warm hospitality. Other churches assisting with the delicious refreshments were Brookstown, Concord, Harmony Grove, Lewisville, Sharon and Union. Each member received a packet of seeds as a favor to remind us to grow and thrive. I hope you ll remember this day when you plant those seeds next spring and watch them grow! Blessings to all, Martha Mission Education and Interpretation: Valerie Prim Mission, Mission, Mission! I just love saying that word, because it reminds me of all of you and your giving hearts. It seems like each one of you are on a Mission each day to see who needs Gods loving care. Sometimes we want to make a big difference in a big way and get defeated. But not Yadkin Valley District ladies; you are all about changing your world, which leads to changing our world, which leads to changing the world! Thank you for staying Christ centered in all you do and for being Christ hands, feet, and heart. "Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world; it's the only thing that ever has", (Margaret Mead). I am so excited to announce that the District Mission Study " will be March 25th, 2017, at Yadkinville UMC, and our presenter will be one of our teachers from Mission U, Sandrea Williamson, from the N. Piedmont District. We will have more details at a later time. May you always remember: " You are Stronger than you know; Braver than you believe; and Smarter than you think!" (Christopher Robinson) Valerie 7

Hi all UMW Ladies, Program Resources: Debra Lawson Hope all you had a wonderful summer and are looking forward to fall. I enjoyed talking with you at our Annual Meeting and greeted your suggestion s and request. I will have the items requested and the Prayer Calendars for 2017 at our District Leadership Meeting. We were down on the number of participants in the reading program from 2014 to 2015, but we still were recognized for having the highest percentage of units participating in the reading program, the highest number of participants in the Reading Program, and the highest number of participants completing Plan 4 for the year 2015. I congratulate all the members who participated. I hope this year we will have more participants in the reading program. I will be glad to come and talk with units about the Reading Program. If you need to order books, pamphlets, and other items the web site is WWW.umwmissionresources.org or you can call 1-800-305-9857. Blessings in Christ, Debra Spiritual Growth: Barbara Crotts Stand outside and feel the wind brush against your face. After the hot summer days that we have had, that is a refreshing feeling. We are striving for a FRESH WIND BLOWING in United Methodist Women (our theme for this years annual meeting). At our Annual Meeting at the Lake, there was a lady who had come to see what our annual meeting was all about. She lived in the immediate area, and was so impressed with the celebration that she inquired about how she could get involved with a local unit. Someone was so kind and took the time to find a local UMW lady to give her information about their meeting time and place...truly...a fresh wind blew... a new face and possible new member for one unit came about there in Stuart auditorium on Sunday morning at the conclusion of our weekend. All our units should be looking for any opportunity to invite women to join in the great fellowship we share and the great mission work we do and the SPIRITUAL GROWTH we derive from being a UNIT- ED METHODIST WOMAN. We truly had a wonderful weekend. Now...it is time for our leadership training events. New officers in...other officers just moving to new positions. Information about what your office is all about is why it is important to attend these training events. Look forward to see as many of you ladies as possible at future events. Congratulations to...oak Grove UMW of Mocksville for being drawn as the lucky recipient of the nurturing partners LUV drawing at Annual Meeting. I was invited to their meeting which put them in the drawing. They will receive a program book, prayer calendar and other goodies just for having a district officer come visit them. Barbara 8

Membership, Nurture & Outreach (MNO) Ruth Hoyle and Rhita Newcomb Wow! Yadkin Valley United Methodist Women are Faith, Hope, and Love in action. WNCC UMW gathered to celebrate at Lake Junaluska September 9-11 and there was a lot to celebrate. Congratulations to all the units who invited a district or conference officer to visit. Unit names were entered in the Feel the LUV drawing; Oak Grove (Mocksville) UMW was drawn. Please invite an officer to visit. We all benefit by meeting other members of UMW. There will be another drawing next year at the annual celebration. Spice up your fall with a walk for missions, refreshments and a presentation from Nicole Johnson, the new Regional Coordinator for Partners in Health and Wholeness. CELEBRATE 100 YEARS Sunday, September 18, Morris Chapel United Methodist Church celebrated 100 years of membership in United Methodist Women and its predecessor organizations. The UMW has been involved in mission for women, children and youth for a century! They celebrated with a special Sunday service. Pastor Dan Lyons's mother, Peggy Lyons, was the guest speaker at all three worship services. Other guests included Conference President Tonya Lanier, District President, and Executive Team Member Carolyn Brown. Lucille Ashburn, who has coordinated Morris Chapel's Bazaar since 1975, was presented with a plague honoring her work. Last year's bazaar raised $26,400 which was used to assist the needy and provide for the church. The Morris Chapel Bazaar is one of the most famous in our district, with people lining up to get in an hour or more before the doors open. This Sunday was a wonderful way to commemorate the Morris Chapel UMW for their Faith, Hope and Love In Action. 10
