Scholarships Aided by Lunch & Boutique By Gail Brown, P, Utah State President Many of you have been asking how much money will be going to P.E.O. philanthropies from our October fundraising event. I am happy to report that the net proceeds are $7,452. This figure includes donations from chapters and individuals. Chapters N, P and Q sponsored the event and each took responsibility for the different aspects of the event (Boutique, Silent Auction and Luncheon, respectively). After collecting money and subtracting their expenses, each chapter sent their profit to the Utah state treasurer. Representatives from each chapter and a state adviser met in November to discuss how the monies would be divided. After much discussion, it was decided that the money would be split evenly among four philanthropies with a donation also going to Cottonwood Presbyterian Church. The four philanthropies are the Program for Continuing Education, the Helen Abbott Fund, the Gump & Ayers Fund and the Utah Cottey Fund. This was a very educational process for the chapter members involved. A detailed financial report will be given at the Utah State Convention in May and will be included in the Convention Proceedings for everyone to view. Again, the state chapter wishes to thank the members of Chapters N, P and Q for all of their hard work and dedication to this fundraising event. There were more than 200 reservations and just a few less attendees. Thanks to all who attended for stepping up to try something different and making it successful.
PCE Grant Awarded By Paula Larsen, B Chapter B, Price, is pleased to have sponsored Nora Talkington for a PCE grant. Nora was awarded a $1,000 grant in December. She is pursuing a master s degree at Northwestern University in plant biology and conservation. Nora is from Vermont and worked in Moab for two years before returning to school for her master s degree. She plans on working as a botanist for a federal, state or non-profit organization with a conservation-based mission. She wants a position which will allow her to unite scientific research with conservation for a greater understanding of ecological processes, which will result in greater restoration success. Presenting her check is Mary Alice Johnson, Chapter B president and Paula Larsen, Chapter B project chairman. Purse Auction Fundraiser Planned By Carla Johnson, AL Chapter AL will hold its Third Annual Purse Auction Fundraiser on Saturday, February 22. Among the possible purses will be two Vera Bradley s and one Miche. As far as what s inside each purse, no one knows. The bidding does get competitive! All monies raised will go towards philanthropies. The event will be from 1-3 p.m. at the home of Bridget Titus 9086 Peach Blossom Dr., Sandy, UT 84094. Keep Our Sisterhood Strong: February Tip By Nancy Williams, Y, Utah State Organizer Tip #3 Think Membership! Your chapter has a Membership Chairman and/or Committee, right? It s their job to worry about building your chapter s membership, right? Not exactly! Membership is the responsibility of each sister. Remember, MEmbership begins with ME. Always be looking for women who you feel would be a good fit for our sisterhood. I challenge each member in Utah to introduce one woman to P.E.O. in the next month. It s OK to talk to your friends and family about P.E.O. Let them know we are a sisterhood of women that Promote Educational Opportunities for women. If they appear to want to know more, invite them to your chapter s next social gathering. It s just that easy! Do your share to welcome new members into your chapter. Offer transportation to a meeting. Be sure she has someone to sit with at meetings. If she misses a meeting, contact her to let her know she was missed. Did you notice who missed your last meeting? Next time make note of who and send an email or give her a call in the next couple of days to let her know she was missed. Offer to carpool to the next event. If she has a conflict and is unable to attend regularly, be her chapter buddy by keeping her up on chapter life. Maybe a few members could get together for coffee or lunch just to stay in touch with her. If your chapter is outgrowing your living rooms, think about growing P.E.O. by developing a new chapter. International has a goal to have 6,000 chapters by our 150 year anniversary in 2019. In the next six years we need 84 more chapters internationally to do this. Can your chapter help reach this goal? By doing all you can at all times, and under all circumstances to express a loving concern for each sister, you will be doing your part in building P.E.O. membership. What will YOU do?
Salt Lake Reciprocity By Shawn Clarke, T The Salt Lake City Area Reciprocity meeting will be held February 13 at the First Congregational Church, 2150 S. Foothill Drive. Light refreshments will be served at 10 a.m. and the meeting begins at 10:30. All members are invited. The associate pastor at Wasatch Presbyterian Church, Catherine Putnam-Netto, has been invited to speak about Valentine's Day and love. Other topics include the Helen Abbott Fund, the Program for Continuing Education and the Founders Day celebration. Hope to see you there. Ogden Founders Day Set By Diane Doelfs, AN The Ogden Area Founders Day celebration will be held on Saturday, March 8 at noon on the 11 th floor of the historic Ben Lomond Hotel, Ogden. Luncheon choices are Seafood Capellini or Pork Tenderloin at a cost of $16 per person. Reservations should be made to Diane Doelfs by February 21. Could Your Chapter Receive This Letter? By Bobbi Nichols, AL, PSP, State Membership Committee This article is intended as food for thought. Sometimes members go inactive because of an oversight. Let s make sure we keep all our members involved. Dear Chapter Members, I'm the woman you asked to join your chapter last year. I'm the woman who was so enthused about a chance to be a P.E.O. that I could hardly wait for my initiation so I could stand up in front of all of you and promise to be a good member. I came to every meeting, sometimes getting there early so I wouldn't miss anything. It didn't seem like anyone wanted to pay attention to me though, even when I tried to be friendly with other ladies. Being friendly has always been hard for me because I am naturally shy. I thought P.E.O. would be good for me because I would be sure to make friends there. I sat down along with some of the women I knew, but they all had their friends they talked to, even when I volunteered some conversation. After that, it was easier just to find a seat among the unfamiliar faces. I hoped very much that the president or another chapter member would ask me to participate or join a committee, like helping with a fund-raiser, but no one asked me. I wanted very much to do something to help out, so I could show that I was proud of being a P.E.O. but no one saw my hand when I volunteered. When I had to miss a meeting, it was because my daughter was sick and my husband was going to be working late, so I stayed at home with her. But no one asked me at the next meeting where I was or why I hadn't been there. I guess it didn't really matter very much to the others whether I was there or not. It was at about this time that I began to wonder if it was really that big a deal to be a P.E.O. It amuses me now when I think back on the discussion in the chapter one evening shortly after I joined. Everyone was talking about why the chapter seemed to be losing members and what they could do about it. They spent almost an hour talking about how to get new members and I was there all the time. All they had to do was make me feel wanted, needed and welcomed. I don't like to think of myself as a loser, but I must have lost a great deal by not having a P.E.O. in my life, and perhaps the organization lost too, by not accepting what I had to offer. So I became a statistic and a negative one at that. No, I never quit P.E.O. because I had never really been a member. I was only a name in the roll book, so how could I quit something to which I had never belonged? I'm the statistic that says, "P.E.O. had nothing for me, so I became inactive," but is such a shame because all I wanted so much to be was an active and dedicated member of P.E.O. Last Call for Stepping Up for P.E.O. T-shirts by Gail Brown, Utah State President One last order will be placed for these P.E.O. T-shirts before Convention. The deadline for ordering is March 24. The order forms and information can be found on the Utah state website at www.peoutah.org. After logging in, there is a link on the main page that takes you to the order information. Checks should be made payable to Utah State Chapter. There are a couple of things to keep in mind when ordering: 1) The short sleeved shirts run small. Please order one or two sizes bigger than you would normally wear. 2) The ¾-sleeved shirts run pretty true to size. 3) If your shirt size is an XXL or larger, please add $2 to the price for both kinds of shirts. It costs us more to order the larger sizes. 4) Shirts may also be ordered in white, please specify on order form. Thanks for supporting your state chapter and, more importantly, for sharing the message of P.E.O. when you wear your shirt. Ruth Orton Scholarship By Shirley Benzley, AN Ruth Orton Scholarship Chairman The Ruth Orton Scholarship was established in 2007 to assist Utah graduates of Cottey College in pursuing B.A or B.S. degrees at the college of their choice. Applications are available by contacting committee member Jane Janis at 801-300-0723. Applications must be received by April 30.
