November 23, 2008 St. Florian Parish Page Three SOLEMNITY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST THE KING Though the theme of Christ s kingship is ancient, this solemnity dates back only to the nineteenth century. Before the calendar reforms of the Second Vatican Council, the solemnity provided a Catholic answer to the Protestants late October celebration of Reformation Sunday. Now the day marks the last Sunday of the liturgical year. Developing themes of the kingship of Christ, the triumph of the Cross and God s judgment on our sin, this liturgy celebrates Jesus as Lord of love, revealing God s love for all people and calling his followers to live in that love. For what are we praying? Almighty and merciful God you break the power of evil and make all things new in you Son Jesus Christ, the King of the universe. May all in heaven and earth acclaim your glory and never cease to praise you. Where do we see the power of evil broken? Where, in our lives, can we say that things are being made new? In those places, God is glorified. In our daily prayer, are we taking time to notice the Lord at work? Can we keep building that disciplines as we examine our consciousness, day by day? Thanksgiving Celebrations! Community Thanksgiving Prayer Service The Hegewisch Christian Community Gathered at Lebanon Lutheran Church Thanksgiving Eve Wednesday, Nov. 26-7:30 p.m. Let us celebrate the Thanksgiving season with our neighbors from Lebanon Lutheran and St. Columba. Your donations of non-perishable food items and your monetary contributions in the collection will greatly assist our St. Vincent de Paul Pantry. Fellowship and refreshments will follow the service. All are welcome and encouraged to join together. St. Florian Parish Thanksgiving Day Mass Thursday, Nov. 27th - 8:15 a.m. Please join us as we celebrate and give thanks for the blessings we have received this year and pray for God s continued love and protection. Please bring your dinner wine and bread for a special blessing during Mass. The Thanksgiving Day monetary offerings will be donated to our St. Vincent Food Pantry. ST. FLORIAN S MISSION STATEMENT We are Roman Catholics of prayer, service and long-standing tradition guided by the spirit to meet the direct needs of our parishioners and neighboring communities in a demanding social environment. We strive to achieve a sense of justice, responsibility, prayerfulness, communication and unity by providing: All individuals the opportunity of receiving Sacraments; The proper educational environment spiritually, morally, academically; A channel for corporal works of mercy; and A time and place for social gathering and fellowship. Our goals and objectives will be accomplished through encouraging active participation in dialogue, evangelization, stewardship, prayer and love. Community Thanksgiving Dinner St. Columba Social Center Thursday, Nov. 27th 12:00 PM 2:00 PM St. Columba Parish will host a community Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving Day, November 27. The dinner will be open to all in the community who are financially disadvantaged along with those who would be alone on the holiday or for those physically unable to prepare a traditional meal for their families. This community dinner is meant to be shared by friends and neighbors, as was the first Thanksgiving dinner. It really is a fun and heartfelt event. A traditional dinner (catered by Steve s) will be served from noon until 2:00 p.m. in the Social Center. The menu includes turkey and stuffing, ham, mashed potatoes, salad, vegetable, rolls and butter, pumpkin pie, and coffee, milk and pop. For more information please contact St. Columba at 646-2660.

In a time when family life is often fragmented and chaotic we thank you for the family we have with us today. In a time when so many cannot express their faith we thank you for our freedoms. In a world that moves ever more quickly, we thank you for this time today to share a meal with loved ones, and to rest, reflect and refresh ourselves on this Thanksgiving Day. Amen. Thanksgiving Day PAUL TURNER Thanksgiving Day may be observed with a special Mass at Catholic churches throughout the United Stated of America. The day is a secular holiday with strong religious roots. This day implies that there is a God, that God is provident, that we recognize what blessings, and that the best thing we can say is Thanks. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops includes this day on the liturgical calendar for the country as an optional memorial. Parishes are therefore not obliged to observe it. They may celebrate whatever weekday Mass would otherwise fall on that day this year. But most parishes choose to make this a special Mass of thanksgiving. If anyone knows how to give thanks to God, the church should know how to do it best. The very word eucharist means thanksgiving. There is no more fitting way to celebrate this feast than to join in prayer at the table of the Lord. The sacramentary offers a set of prayers that the priest may use for a Thanksgiving Day Mass, including a special preface to open the eucharistic prayer. Readings may be taken from the lectionary s Mass In Thanksgiving to God. There are several choices here, so the readings you hear may change from year to year. Some churches observe other customs. There may be a food collection at Mass so that those who have trouble paying for groceries will benefit from the generosity of the faithful. Or parishes might invite you to bring some of the food you will eat at your own table this day. In that case, you may hear the Blessings of Food on Thanksgiving Day form the Book of Blessings. 2008 Resource Publications 160E Virginia St., San Jose, Ca 95112
