Handling Failure Does failing mean that we are failures? When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had John also to assist them. - Acts 13:5 Then Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia. John, however, left them and returned to Jerusalem. -Acts 13:13 Therefore I have reached the decision that we should not trouble those Gentiles who are turning to God, but we should write to them to abstain only from things polluted by idols and from fornication and from whatever has been strangled and from blood. -Acts 15:19 Who was right: Paul or Barnabas? The good results of an honest conflict: 1) A deserter was and set Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful in my ministry. -2 Timothy 4:11 Your sister church in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings; and so does my son Mark. -1 Peter 5:13 2) A new and a great was developed: Silas 3) 2 mission teams were now Application: Are there areas in your life in which you have failed? Does this mean you are a failure? Yes or No. If you have sought forgiveness from God for your past sins, God does not now see you as you were but as who you will become. How about others? Are you holding their failures against them? Do you give others as much grace as you give yourself? Do you forgive others their failures as much as you have forgotten your own failings? Do you see their potential or do you see their mistakes in their past? Consider these verses: "If we confess our sins, he (God) is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." -1 John 1:9 "Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift." Matthew 5:23-24 If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Romans 12:18 All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, -Romans 3:23 God demonstrates his own love toward us in this: while we were still sinners Christ died for us. -Romans 5:8 If you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. -Romans 10:9 God is in the business of restoration! Does a past failure or series of failures define who you are today?

Day One: Acts Chapter 17 May 29 June 2 Since his conversion, Thessalonica is the sixth time Paul has been forced by persecution to leave an area. How would you view your mission if that happened to you? How does your response compare with Paul s (see 1 Thessalonians 2:1-6)? Compared with the Thessalonians (vv. 2-4), how do the Bereans receive the Gospel (vv. 11-12)? How is Paul s teaching on the diversity of gifts (1 Corinthians 12) illustrated here in the functions of Paul, Silas and Timothy? In terms of time, consistency and intensity, how would you rate your Bible study? Is it at all like the Bereans? How does Paul is Athens own culture and ideas to help them see the weaknesses in the way they relate to deity? Paul uses idols and Greek poetry as points of contact with these people. What could you use as a point of contact with people today in your efforts to relate the Gospel? Day Two: Acts Chapter 18 How did Paul s ministry change after Timothy and Silas come to him (see 2 Corinthians 2:3)? If you were called to the foreign mission field, would you see financial partners to provide for your support or would you become a tentmaker like Paul? Why? How could your present job (or retirement) be tentmaking to support your family while you engage in God s kingdom work? How did Priscilla and Aquila assist Paul? What does this tell you about the role of women in the New Testament? Who was very helpful to you when you were young and enthusiastic about the faith? How did this person help? Who could you help now? Day Three: Acts Chapter 19 What seems to be the signal throughout Acts for Paul to stop teaching in the synagogues? Why do you think this is so? What do these stop and go signals teach you about ministry in general? How do people try to use Jesus for their own purposes today? What is the difference between that and real faith in Christ? Could Demetrius have become a Christian and kept his business? Can you think of situations today where someone in a respectable trade would be forced to choose between that trade and Christ? Day Four: Acts Chapter 20 One reason for this trip was to collect money for Christians in Judea (see Romans 15:25-29). Why then would Paul want companions for this task (see 2 Corinthians 8:16-23; 1 Corinthians 16:1-4)? Paul s companions protect him from anyone accusing him of misusing funds. How could churches and other ministries today be helped by such accountability? How would you complete this sentence: The one thing I must accomplish at any cost is? How does it relate to Paul s goal in verse 24? Day Five: Acts Chapter 21 How is Paul interpreting these warnings differently than his friends do (vv. 4, 10-13; see also 20:22-23)? Why doesn t he listen to their advice? Does Paul strike you as courageous or foolish, given this belttightening message? Why? In your eyes, did Paul make the right decision to go to Jerusalem, even though godly people through the Spirit urged him not to go? Thinking about the tensions James and the elders faced because of strict Jews, how do you decide when you should bend for the sake of others, and when you should stand for your principles?
