The Parables of Jesus 3 26 August, 2012 Andy Lewis (Courtesy of www.biblestudymen.com) A Closer Look Matthew 22:1 14 Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: 2 The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. 3 He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come. 4 Then he sent some more servants and said, Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet. 1

5 But they paid no attention and went off one to his field, another to his business. 6 The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them. 7 The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. 8 Then he said to his servants, The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. 9 Go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find. 10 So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, both good and bad, and the wedding hall was filled with guests. 11 But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. 12 Friend, he asked, how did you get in here without wedding clothes? The man was speechless. 13 Then the king told the attendants, Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 14 For manyareinvited, are but few arechosen. 2

How do you feel when you plan a big event and it is poorly attended? What kind of excuses for not coming do you most resent people using? This parable starts in a similar way to the Parable about the Great Banquet but from Matthew 22:6 on, it is quite different (and much harsher). What do you remember about the parable of the Great Banquet? (Luke 14:16 24) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kqtojkz-am&feature=related The Parable of the Great Banquet (Luke 14:16 24) 15 When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God. 16 Jesus replied: A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. 17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, Come, for everything is now ready. 18 But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me. 19 Another said, I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I m Im on my way to try them out. Please excuse me. 20 Still another said, I just got married, so I can t come. 3

21 The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame. 22 Sir, the servant said, what you ordered has been done, but there is still room. 23 Then the master told his servant, Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full. 24 I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet. In Jesus days, it was customary to send two invitations to a party How does the parable of this party (banquet) fit into Israel s history? the first to announce it the second to tell that everything was ready. Israel s spiritual iit lindifference to the invitationit ti Condemns the contempt that Israel as a whole (and everyone in general) had (and has) for God s gracious invitation through Jesus the Messiah 4

How did the character of the banquet change given the new guest list? First sweep In Town the poor, the beggars, the indigent Second sweep Outside town the vagabonds and sojourners, the shunned and unwelcome Such people would have felt very uncomfortable at the feast of a rich man, socially very out of place. It was a custom to politely refuse to come until pressed to like politely refusing to take a second helping at a meal until the host says, "Oh, but you must!" and then passing your plate happily to receive more. The rich man hasn't sent out soldiers to sweep the area, round up everyone, and march them to his house. But he has instructed his servants not to take "No" for an answer. To encourage and strongly urge everyone they meet to accept this invitation. There are many people in this parable: The king, His son, His servants, Thoseinvited the first time who did not come, Those who killed the servants, The people on the streets invited the second time. Who do you identify with and why? 5

Verse 22:10 affirms the Great Commission, 10 So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the badaswell as asthegood good, the Gospel invitation is to be spread to all, both good and bad Were those who refused to come the first time invited again? Does receiving an invitation guarantee that all will be allowed to attend the feast, i.e., enter the kingdom of heaven? In the parable, wedding clothes were needed for admittance to the banquet. Friend, he asked, how did you get in here without wedding clothes? Rev 19:6 8 White Robes of Righteousness Provided by God for the Wedding What do the Wedding Clothes represent? 6

Rev 19:6 8 Rev 19:6 8 6 Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. 7 Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb bhas come, and his bride has made herself ready. 8 Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear. (Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God s holy people.) Righteousness???. Where would they get the righteousness? The Guest expected to have it to join the wedding feast? The King provided the attire but this man refused? Were the clothes of the expelled guest his acts of righteousness? All of our righteous acts are like filthy rags in God s sight. iht Any True Righteousness comes from God 7

Isaiah 64:5 6 5 You come to the help of those who gladly do right, who remember your ways. But when we continued to sin against them, you were angry. How then can we be saved? 6 All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away. If the Attire is Righteousness why would that be a requirement for admission to the Feast? given by God attained by the Guest The proper attire would correspond to all that Jesus said was required for entrance into the Kingdom of Heaven Faith in Christ Given as Free Gift out of God s Love So There was an invitation to the banquet Not all who responded to the invitation were allowed to remain those without t proper attire. The King had the man tied and cast out into the darkness, where there would be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 8

In Verse 22:11, the king speaks to someone not wearing wedding clothes. In today s terms, who might this be: imposter non Christian someone trying to enter the kingdom on his own terms Verse 22:14 says, many are invited but few are chosen. Who does the choosing? The King / God Who is Jesus Talking to Saved or Unsaved? Only through the Holy Spirit can we search for God Sovereign Grace Omni Omni Total Control Unmerited favor to those who have not earned it The invitation has gone out to all but some just refused, some wanted to come but refused to submit to the requirements of entrance into the kingdom. So none of these will be present in the kingdom. 9

The invitation to the Messianic banquet (Rev 19:6 8 and Rabbinic Literature) To the Jews first, but they refused. Then Jesus began to turn to the Gentiles, All who believed in him would enter the kingdom in the place of the others Even if the ones who believed bli were formerly prostitutes and sinners. What do you personally take away from this parable? Single Word Summary Will you be one of the chosen ones? Are you sure? If not, what must you do to be sure? FAITH 10
