Everybody Can Help Somebody. There is a children s book recently published that tells the story of a poor, young black boy living in the Depression era who had the attitude he could help others even if he didn t have much at all. People are different in their life circumstances, but everyone can use help and everyone can be a helper. That s a good thing to think about. There were many who helped Jesus in his ministry. In Luke 8:1-3 (NIV), we read, After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, and also some women.these women were helping to support them out of their own means. Jesus was sowing seed. He came to share the Good News of salvation. Alongside him were disciples who would carried the message into the world. But also right alongside of them were these women who supported Jesus with the means they had available. In Acts 9:36 there is mentioned another who in the name of Jesus was doing what she could to bring the love of Christ to her neighbors. In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor. The New Testament church would have never grown had it not been for those who came along side of the ministries of the apostles. The Apostle Paul was indebted to many for their support and faithful courage in difficult circumstances. They worked together for the glory of God and for our ultimate benefit through their witness. In Acts 19:22 some of Paul s companions are mentioned, [Paul] sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, while he stayed in the province of Asia a little longer. This is not surprising many became fellow workers declaring the Way, Truth, and Life only found in Jesus. This is the how the Lord ordained the spread of salvation to the lost. In Matthew 9:37-38 (NIV), 37 Then [Jesus] said to his disciples, The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. 2

Every one harvested becomes a called worker! Has anything changed? There are professionals today who devote themselves to vocational ministry. Pastors and missionaries set aside other work to be entirely devoted to proclamation of God s Word. We can be grateful to God for their devotion and for those who support them. But the Church cannot afford to sit back and take an attitude of letting the hirelings attempt the task of evangelism. There are far too few, and they will never have the contacts and opportunities to connect with all the people who need Jesus. Besides, there are tremendous personal blessings that come along when regular Christians share Christ. You see, it s never been a question of have to when it comes to sharing Jesus; it is with joy we get to share and see how the Lord breaks into the brokenness of lives shattered by sin to then be healed by the Savior. Some Christians are intimidated by the thought of ridicule or rejection in witnessing for Jesus. But if we remember we are not alone in the task, we gain confidence. Christian coworkers will join us, and that is great to have their fellowship. But our greatest confidence comes in knowing this, Psalm 118:7 The Lord is with me; he is my helper If we are going to do a good job in whatever we attempt in life, we are benefitted by being well prepared. It s the same with sharing Christ with others. 2 Timothy 2:15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. We are all workers, but the question is: are we good or poor at it? Is it surprising that the more we know about scripture, the better we become? Does that mean that we all need preaching lessons? There are many ways God equips His people to serve Him, and every role is important. 1 Corinthians 3:8-10 8 The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor. 9 For we are coworkers in God s service; you are God s field, God s building. 10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. I am glad to be a coworker with our congregation. The Lord has given me the privilege of preaching and teaching His Word. I give God all the glory for any good thing that comes from my efforts. But I believe the truly heavy lifting in ministry comes from ordinary Christians who seriously accept the Lord s call in spreading the Gospel, who rely on the extraordinary power of the Holy Spirit, reaching out in our neighborhoods and workplaces with the message of eternal hope offered through Jesus Christ our Lord. 3
