Sunday, October 22, 2017 Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost Holy Communion October 22, 2017 9:00 & 11:00 Service WELCOME TO EMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH INTRODUCTION In today's first reading God uses the Gentile ruler Cyrus to accomplish divine purposes. When the Pharisees try to trap Jesus, he tells them to give the emperor what belongs to him and to God what belongs to God. To gather for worship reminds us that our ultimate allegiance is to God rather than to any earthly authority. Created in the image of God, we offer our entire selves in the service of God and for the sake of the world. PRELUDE WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS A Gaelic Offering Flute Cocktail CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, the one who fashions us, the one who heals us, the one who reforms us again and again. Let us confess our sin, calling for God's transforming power. Silence for reflection and self-examination. Source of all life, we confess that we have not allowed your grace to set us free. We fear that we are not good enough. We hear your word of love freely given to us, yet we expect others to earn it. We turn the church inward, rather than moving it outward. Forgive us. Stir us. Reform us to be a church powered by love,
willing to speak for what is right, act for what is just, and seek the healing of your whole creation. God hears our cry and sends the Spirit to change us and to empower our lives in the world. Our sins are forgiven, God s love is unconditional, and we are raised up as God s people who will always be made new, in the name of Jesus Christ. The assembly stands. GATHERING SONG O God beyond All Praising ELW 880 GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Sovereign God, raise your throne in our hearts. Created by you, let us live in your image; created for you, let us act for your glory; redeemed by you, let us give you what is yours, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. The assembly is seated. FIRST READING: Isaiah 45:1 7 (Please turn to page 748 in the Old Testament of your pew Bible). The prophet announces that Cyrus the Persian emperor is the one the Lord has anointed to end Israel's exile. The Lord makes this choice so that the whole world will recognize this Lord as the only God. Persia had a god of light and a god of darkness; the Lord claims sovereignty over both light and darkness. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 2
SECOND READING: 1 Thessalonians 1:1 10 (Please turn to page 217 in the New Testament of your pew Bible). Most likely this letter is the first written by Paul. Paul is giving pastoral encouragement and reassurances to new Christians living in an antagonistic pagan environment. Their commitment of faith, love, and hope makes them a model for other new Christian communities. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The assembly stands to welcome the gospel. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION GOSPEL: GOSPEL: Matthew 22:15 22 (Please turn to page 25 in the New Testament of your pew Bible). After Jesus begins teaching in the temple, religious leaders try to trap him with questions. First they ask if God's people should pay taxes to an earthly tyrant like Caesar. The holy gospel according to Matthew, the twenty-second chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. The assembly is seated. SERMON Resident Pastor Will Kittinger 3
The assembly stands to proclaim the word of God in song. HYMN OF THE DAY: God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending Tune: Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing 1 God, whose giving knows no ending, from your rich and endless store: nature's wonder, Jesus' wisdom, costly cross, grave's shattered door, gifted by you, we turn to you, off'ring up ourselves in praise; thankful song shall rise forever, gracious donor of our days. 2 Skills and time are ours for pressing toward the goals of Christ, your Son: all at peace in health and freedom, races joined, the church made one. Now direct our daily labor, lest we strive for self alone; born with talents, make us servants fit to answer at your throne. 3 Treasure, too, you have entrusted, gain through pow'rs your grace conferred; ours to use for home and kindred, and to spread the gospel word. Open wide our hands in sharing, as we heed Christ's ageless call, healing, teaching, and reclaiming, serving you by loving all. Text: Robert L. Edwards, 1915-2006. THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. *Or, "he descended into hell," another translation of this text in widespread use. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we pray for the church, the world, and all of God s creation. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer. HEAR OUR PRAYER 5
We bring to you, Christ, members and friends of Emmanuel who need your healing touch. (Names from our congregation ) Into your loving hands, gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your abundant mercy, through Jesus Christ our risen Savior. Congregational refrain: Hear Our Prayer PEACE The presiding minister and the assembly greet each other in the peace of the risen Christ. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The people may greet one another with a sign of Christ's peace, and may say, "Peace be with you," or similar words. The assembly is seated. OFFERING An offering is gathered for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need. During this time, the table is set. And you will guide us so we will not stray; we ll follow you every day. So we come to worship and raise our voices high high to the Lord our savior who for our sins did die. The assembly stands. OFFERING PRAYER Let us pray. God of life, you give us these gifts of the earth, these resources of our life and our labor. Take them, offered in great thanksgiving, and use them to set a table that will heal the whole creation; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Light. DIALOGUE PREFACE It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 7
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. 8
LORD'S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Invited to the Lord s Table are all baptized Christians who celebrate with us the Real Presence of Christ in the Sacrament.
