EMMANUEL NEWS June, 2012 www.alexmnepiscopal.org MUSIC, MUSIC, MUSIC Whether you can sing or not, hymns are a vital part of our worship service at Emmanuel. We re blessed with some wonderful and amazing organists: Nancy Anderson, Diane Alveshere, Margaret Kalina, with assistance from Laurie Krueger and Virginia Hegre. However, have you ever thought that the organ was just a teeny, tiny bit loud? There are reasons for this. Our organ was built for the church in the 1970 s, a gift from Lucille Oliver, who was the organist at the time. The organ is unique to Emmanuel, and was built by Mr. Hunt of Minneapolis, who was not an organist, but loved music. It is a pipe organ, and, for many of us, is a priceless sound which adds to our worship service. However, former Jr. Warden Don Krueger has worked hard to find someone able and capable to work on this organ. The vestry has committed to having the organ tuned and to try to pinpoint some of the problems that our organists have identified. Two months ago, Don Krueger contacted Moe Pipe Organ Company of Wadena. Allen Moe came out to Emmanuel and did a thorough inspection. His general opinion of the organ was that it is a beautifully built instrument and I found it to be in overall good shape considering its age. Allen Moe offered us an agreement for semi-annual maintenance of the organ, for only $211 per visit. The vestry has approved this expenditure. The service calls will be one before Christmas, and the other in the late spring. Voicing: The overall tone of the organ is very bright and top heavy without much in the way of a firm foundation. This overabundance of brilliance is most often interpreted by the congregation as the organ being too loud. In a church the size of yours it is important to avoid this sort of a scenario. While its not possible to turn the organ into something completely different it is possible to make certain adjustments to the pipes, called voicing, in order to mitigate the abundance of brilliance. This work would be done to the organ onsite and would require 3-5 days to properly accomplish. Lack of Expression Due to the way the organ was originally built there are no swell shades in front of the pipe. Swell shades resemble thick Vertical blinds made of wood. They are controlled by the organist using a special pedal. The organ has this pedal but it is not connected to anything. There are several options available to include expression to the organ and I would be happy to discuss them with you in person. Lack of Tonal Variety Again, because of the way the organ was originally designed it is lacking in variety as far as sounds go. There are loud sounds and very soft sounds, but not much in the middle. It is possible to make judicious additions to the organ which would remedy this problem. This could be done in conjunction with the expression issue mentioned above. There are also many options available for this and we should discuss this in person with your organist before doing much in the way of planning. Aside from these three items the organ seems to be in good shape and we would be glad to have Emmanuel as a customer. We will need to meet with him again, and hopefully with some of our organists, to discuss all the recommendations, and get a price for all of the work. Do we have the money to spend on these fixes? From the book of Acts: When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. And so on Whitsunday, May 27th, members of the congregation participated in the first lesson by repeating parts of the lesson in Norwegian (Wendy Zander), Greek (Laird Barber), Spanish (Tim Johnson), French (Belvin Doebbert), and German (JoEllen Doebbert.) Just for Fun Pot Luck Sunday, June 10th We will be having a potluck after church. The reason? No specific reason just fun and fellowship! Please bring a dish to share. The church will provide coffee and lemonade. There will be a free-will offering that will go towards the windows for the Mission 2012 house at White Earth. Let s have a fun, easy meal together! Hopefully this will become a regular part of our Pentecost Sunday service. Soup & Salad Supper A great time was had by all. Thanks to Bette Wolf who did such a fantastic job of getting the word out, getting out tickets, and lining up salads. Received from tickets given to parishioners $795 Money from ticket sales at the door $ 64 Total receipts $859 Most of the receipts for expenses have not been turned in yet. 77 tickets were sold to parishioners and 11 were sold at the door. If you received tickets and have not paid for them or returned them, please do so as soon as possible.
Now in our 32nd year, this ministry of serving coffee and cookies to travelers along the I-94 continues without interruption. What fun...we get to see people from all walks of life, and even a few Episcopalians! People are in awe of our homemade cookies! We received a lot of thank you s and even a few hugs. Thank you Donna Ziegelman for heading this up; and thank you to everyone who gave their time and effort baking cookies and working at the rest areas.
Mission Project 2012 is an on-going project of the Diocese. One aspect of the project is to build a single-family, energy-efficient home on the White Earth Reservation for Robin Smith. The need for housing is great on Indian reservations, which struggle with substandard housing, according to Robert Two Bullls, missioner for Indian Work and Multicultural Ministry. It is our goal at Emmanuel to furnish at least three windows for the house. There are 12 panes of glass in these windows and for a donation of $25 per pane, you will be helping to buy a window for Robin s family home. Robin is a community health representative, a certified nursing assistant who helps with a variety of health needs in her community. She will move into the house with her four children and her partner. Robin s father Ed will be coordinating the project this summer. To date, we have purchased 33 panes of glass for the windows, or $825.00. We will continue to sell panes through June. Look for the window display in the parish hall. Mission Project 2012: Goal: Fill four Ready for Success boutiques with items. Faith communities throughout Minnesota will collect accessories including men s and women s wallets, handbags, personal care items, ties and jewelry to be available to low-income individuals preparing for job interviews. The items will be distributed through the Episcopal Community Services Ready for Success Programs. Sunday, June 17th will be our final collection day. Personal care items for men and women; shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion, men s and women s deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste, jewelry, scarves, and handbags for women, wallets, watches and ties for men. Don your hard hats and bring your gloves...saturday June 9th! Jr. Warden, Bob Baas has asked the congregation for help in removing four remaining windows in the basement, all of which are contributing to our on-going mold problem. Once the windows are removed, Bob has someone who will put the concrete replacement blocks in. Members will prepare the cement and do general gopher duties during this phase. This should stop the leaking into the basement. If you didn t know it, moisture has seeped down behind the piano in the basement, which has rendered the piano incapable of being tuned. Mold had formed along the back and baseboards, and John Hull has cleaned that up. We ll start the day off with coffee and donuts! See you at 9:00 a.m. Our new driveway is in! The best part of the new driveway is that the asphalt goes up to the church doors and it all slopes away from the building. Again, this is all being done to help alleviate the moisture problem we have in the parish hall. The new driveway also allows for additional parking by the church for our mobility impaired. Some of the sprinklers had to be moved in order to accommodate the widening. Thanks to Bob Baas, Jr. Warden, for overseeing this project, which included widening and redoing the path to the Food Shelf parking lot. (Isn t that a cute car in the picture above?)
