For death has died on Easter day, let all on earth and heaven say that, "Jesus is risen, is risen from the dead. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!" To the tomb came the women early that day, and found the stone had been rolled away, amazed were they when the angel said, "Why seek the living among the dead?" Death, O death, where is your sting? All praise to our risen Lord and King, who endured the cross and the grave for all who believe to redeem and save! *An Affirmation of Faith: Acts 10:36-43 We know the message God sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: He is Lord of all! That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name. Archaeology Project New Castle Presbyterian Church has affiliated with Professor Lu Ann De Cunzo of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Delaware and University students who are conducting a program of preliminary archaeological testing on the church property. Nikki Laws, teaching assistant, will serve as liaison to the New Castle Presbyterian Church History Committee. The cost to our church will be for consumable excavation supplies and will be taken from the History Committee budget ($100). The survey will consist of approximately 3 2'x5' test units excavated as designated spaces near the Meeting House foundation and in the northwest corner of the property. Excavation units will be covered by plywood when the team is not on site. After evaluation, the holes will be filled in and/or the brick replaced. The focus of the excavations will be the Meeting House to increase our knowledge of that building. It will also include the north-west corner of the church property with some effort made to better define the church property s relationship to Second (Market) Street, and to better assess the potential for survival of any burials outside the footprint of the 1854 church building. Miss Utility has marked the location of underground public utilities on the western portion of the church property. No excavations will be undertaken in these area. Dr. De Cunzo has reviewed the church sewer map and avoid these areas as well.
Artifacts will be processed and catalogued to the professional archaeological standards and a final report prepared, including a map. All artifacts uncovered will remain the property of New Castle Presbyterian Church. They will be returned to the church prepared for curation, upon completion of analysis and reporting along with original field records, a set of digital images of fieldwork, and copies of laboratory documentation. The Session and Trustees of New Castle Presbyterian Church will curate the entire collection. Plan to attend a presentation on Wednesday, May 15 at 7:00 pm, when the work of the team will be reported to our church and community. Many thanks to the University of Delaware for expanding our knowledge of our church buildings and campus!
